Testing OS restore
by Guest tnt- 0 replies
Guys, I am looking to test a complete restore of a Windows 2003 (Ent.) server. This is a member server with only the OS installed (no other programs have been installed). Background : I have done a restore on a single 2000 AD controller before where I had a complete backup set. I then reinstalled the entire OS (we were assuming the whole OS got corrupted) on the same physical machine. From there, we would go into F8 - directory restore mode and restore the system state. Would this be any different on a member 2003? Instead of going to F8, we would go into its normal mode? Thanks in advance, Tnt

by Guest mikee- 4 replies

We have a w2k3 domain. We have some servers on our dmz and we can't give them access to the internet to download patches. Does microsoft have a site that has all the patches, and something that will scan the server and then install all needed patches from a cd or dvd? We don't want to have to download the patches one by one and then copy them to a disk. ie an iso of all pathces that we can install would be nice. Thanks in advance

File in Use - filename.xls is locked for editing by ' '.
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply

Here's a bit of an odd one. We have a report from one group of users about an issue they are having with opening files in a particular directory on one of our file servers (Windows Server 2003 SP1 in 2003 Domain). When the user (client is Windows xP SP2, Office 2003) attempts to open an excel file in this directory that is opened by another user, they get the usual "File in Use" prompt (with - Read Only, Notify and Cancel as options). Usually in such a situation it will say "Filename.xls is locked for editing by 'username'." but for some reaon the username variable does not appear here only empty single quotes (by ' '.). I realize this may be somewhat …

We have one-place branch office and we'd like to create security analysis of our services, checking procedures and make new procedures and rules. As first step we'll run Microsoft Best Practices Analyzers (for Exchange, GPO, SharePoint, SystemStateAnalyzer, ...) and follow Microsoft Instrastructure Optimization to identify our currently position in IT software and hardware world. Can you please advice any other SW / procedure to follow formal procedure...? p.s. sorry for crosspoting Thnx.

by Guest William- 0 replies

hi, i have perfmon alerts config'd to monitor disk space, memory, and many other counters. i have created a regular (non admin) user that the alert runs as. all of the perfmon alerts start just fine and run appropriately UNTIL an alert is fired and it has to execute a batch file with "cscript sendemail.vbs ...." in it. i have even altered batch file to simply "echo test > c:\scripts\test.txt" (without quotes) and that won't even work the alert is never fired and of course i never receive alerts. :) user has been granted logon locally rights in sec pol, and i assigned user the logon as batch file rights in sec pol. i have also granted the builtin b…

do the MX priorities have to be in multiples of 10?
by Guest SQL Programmer- 0 replies
Hello: Traditionally, MX priorities are set in multiples of 10, and an attempt is made to deliver the email to the server with the lowest priority first. Do they have to be in priorities of 10, though? If an MX file has a priority of 10, another of 9, and another of 8, will that priority "work"? Thanks! SQL Programmer (it's just a name)

NTFS permissions work for group but not user
by Guest wmeehan79@gmail.com- 4 replies

I've run into an odd problem open files from one of our file servers, when logged into the Citrix box. If I assign a group permission to a folder, then the user can open it fine. However, if I just assign permissions to the user then they are denied access. This is only happening on one file server, the other one seems to work fine. Both file servers have the same GPO applied. All the workstations can access the folders/files without any problems. I'm not even sure where to start looking, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Wayne

Re: How to schedule a reboot in Windows Server 2003

Re: How to schedule a reboot in Windows Server 2003 Hi, I have the same need as well. To answer your question of why I would want to schedule a restart....... I need to schedule a restart in order to finalize Windows updates after all users have disconnected from the server and all backups have completed. This will be useful in getting the updates completed without inconveniencing the network users by waiting for a reboot during server access hours. Thanks, Matt 'Miha Pihler [MVP Wrote: > ;2036513']Hi Mark, > > There is a command line tool that comes with Windows Server 2003 -- so > you > don't need any 3rd party or resource ki…

Print Management and missing domain controller
by Guest Lasse- 1 reply

Hi I don't quit know how to explain my problem, but here goes :-) We/I use Server 2003 R2 and print management to manage the company printers. We deploy all printers through Print Management. As far as I can understand Print Management actually checks for printer changes at every login, if a printer has been removed from Print Management it removes it when the user logs in. My problem is that sometimes some of our users loses all the printers, if I check the log from Print Management I can see that all the printers have been removed because it couldn't find the domain controller, when this happens the users default printer is changed to a local pri…

Hi there I hope someone working on our helpdesk in the IT department that need to manage all the backups for regional offices. Some of the offices are small and only have one Windows 2003 server that will act as a DC/Fileserver/Exchange server. We use NTBackup for the smaller sites. I need to give this user access to manage the backups without giving him too much permission. He is a member of the account operators/backup operators and server operators. If he tries to manage media in the removable storage area in Device Manager we will just get an access denied. Can someone please help so that I can grant this user enough permission to manage all back…

Hi, [Windows 2003 Server Std, MS Exchange 2003 Server, CISCO firewall, IIS web server] We have a web server which serves as a file repository for our clients. They can click on a web link from our web pages to download the file (mostly PDF files). Our web server uses a different port (8081) than port 80. Some users complaint they could not download files from us. They said it was because we used non-standard port and their office firewall blocked the downloads. The reason why we use 8081 was because we have OWA, uses port 80, and wanted to separate it from web server. Is there any way for us to use port 80 for web server and OWA also? How do we configure it? …

Mandatory Profiles loading slow on XP Pro
by Guest Luke- 0 replies
I'm using Mandatory profiles on PC's in one of my labs on Server 2003 network. The profiles load very slow and I can't figure out why. I don't see anything abnormal in the event view and was curious of other ways to do some logging. When I log on, the "Loading your personal settings" is very quick < 5 seconds "Applying your personal setting" is the slow part >60 seconds Logging off also takes significant time also. "Logging off" >40 seconds "Saving settings" <5 seconds The reason I believe this isn't normal is because I have other PC's in another lab that are much quicker, but were ghosted from a different image. They load much …

Why do I have to leave & rejoin the domain to make logins work?
by Guest JoshGfromPortland- 12 replies

Every so often I get the following message when trying to login with my virtual machines: "Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Pleast try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance." To fix the problem I have to leave and rejoin the domain. But I don't know what is causing this to break. I am running Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Windows XP Pro SP3 on the virtual machines. I'm fairly certain there are no other virtual machines or physical machines with the same computer names.…

Hi all, I am running out of room on my C: drive on a Win2003 R2 server. I noticed in the C:\Windows folder there are a lot of compressed folders that whose name starts with $NTUninstall and I believe those are folders that Windows Update puts there. Is there a safe way to move those folders without messing up my server? It would be nice If I could get rid of them, as some of them are quite big. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi all. I have a windows 2000 server with sp4. It is my sql production server used by my company. SQL service use up 1.3GB++ ram base on my check on task manager. Services.exe use up about 400+MB ram which i find it unusual. My users are complaining their applications which connect to my sql server is very slow. I suspect it is caused by high mem utilization as free memory available can go as low as 10MB. I have checked the internet and have installed debug diagnostic tool on my server but do not know how to use it to check if there is something wrong with services.exe. Pls advise how i can use this tool or if there are better alternatives. Thks in advance…
