I have a share that is mapped (T:\) to my pc when I search (regular old WinXP search function) within a folder on that mapped drive (T:\DOCUMENTS\) I get a strange result, you can view a screenshot here... http://baumshelter.net/search.JPG The text I use (partial file name, no wildcards) to search has no effect...still same results. When I just search T:\ I get the correct results. Any ideas???

Unable to Telnet to port 17 (QOTD)
by Guest mikelenno- 5 replies

Hello, I'd like to get the qotd service running on our LAN as part of a way to inform users. I've enabled Simple TCP on our Windows 2003 Server SP2 but when I telnet to port 17 on the server to test I get a flashing cursor only - not a quote. The quote file is in the correct location. The server and workstation I'm testing from both have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i - I've disabled the Access Protection components of these (the bit that does port blocking I believe) when testing but still no joy. The MS how to article seemed straightforwared so I'm not sure what else I can check. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated as the feature would be …

Licensing system error
by Guest Paulo- 1 reply

Hi, When I try to add new license to my windows 2003R2 server I get the following license system you do not have the appropriate access privileges to complete this operation I've tried following http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;153140 which makes no difference. Although the LLS folder has nothing in it. Is there anything I'm missing here? Thanks Paulo

server sb 03 refuses to share
by Guest whizr- 2 replies

I've got a bit of a conundrum. I setup a small business 03 server and it runs great.. i went to setup some profile based network drive mapping and it keeps erroring on the server side saying "you don't have creation privileges" "you have to create the folder manually" so i did. But the workstation doesn't see it. On further examination I (as the administrator) can't even jump to it through the UNC path. I then ran an experiment, share a folder on both C and one on D with the same security on the share and the folder. I can access the share off the C drive but not the D drive. I have been dealing with windows for years and access privileges are no stranger but th…

Scheduled task, ran interactively ?
by Guest andyjgw- 2 replies

Hi Here's what I'm trying to do: Create a scheduled task that will be installed via group policy as a computer startup script, that will run at a certain time a day and interact with the currently logged on user. The task creation and such works fine, but I'm stuck in that the task runs with local SYSTEM privileges and thus the user never sees the interface (actually, an HTA html application pop up). I've tried messing around with /U and /RU switches with "schtasks / create" to no avail. If I specify the user, then it prompts for that user's password - and the problem with that anyway is that if User A puts in their password, but User B happens to be th…

Hi As above, I have inherited a 2K3 Server will multiple NTFS Partitions on a Hardware RAID 5 configuration (DELL Poweredge). I want to keep a separate partition for the system but the data needs consolidating into a single partition instead of 4 250 GB ones. The box is a Production Fileserver so downtime needs to be minimal, a bit of a search shows up various ways of doing this. Using Diskpart to extend volumes but this relies on being able to move the data somewhere else delete a partition then extend the partition into the unpartitioned space and I don;t really relish the thought of doing it for 4 partitions. Acronis Disk Director 'states' thi…

Best practice for backing up
by Guest stjoe5373@news.postalias- 2 replies

Hi, I know this isn't "Windows" specific but I'm just looking for the best practice for backing data up. I'm only backing data, and system data, not the whole OS. I have multiple customers ranging from needing to backup 20MB of data to one that is requiring about 120GB of data. I for the most part use external hard drives with USB 2.0 and rotate the drives every few days. Is there something "better" (better being relative) out there that I'm over looking, tapes, NAS, SAS? I've gone from tapes to hard drives due to hard drives having less issues, being MUCH faster to backup and restore ect... Was that an ok move? Is the industry standard becoming external…

0x0000008E Hotfix in KB 829422
by Guest msdawkins- 3 replies

I have a Win 2003 Std Edition w/ SP1 server with the problem described in KB article 829422. Microsoft has sent me the hotfix per my request. The only problem is that when I try to install it, it says that "the Service Pack version is newer than the update, so it is not necessary to install", and then closes. I have checked the file version of Win32k.sys (which is the file to be updated) and my file is a "lower" version number than the one described in the article. Has anyone else seen this issue? What is the point of the hotfix if it can't be installed?

Dual processor Quad Core Quad Processor?
by Guest Jeff- 1 reply

OK, building servers here. Licensing costs a lot of money. Standard 2003 r2 supports 8 smp processors, Enterprise windows 2003 r2 supports 16. Does that mean if I have 4 - quad core processors, Windows Standard is not an option as this will equate to 16 cores? Also what happens on XP Pro when you run a Quad core and it only supports a dual processor?
