w2k3 logs me off right after user/password
by Guest future2Bunknown- 4 replies

I have a windows 2003 in workgroup having following symptoms: - if I log on as a *normal* user, once I typed in the credential, it logs me off right after - the logging off window pops up followed by the ctrl-alt-del window. This doesn't always happen but happens 9 out of 10 attemps(or more frequent) - however if I type in my credential again, I can get into the desktop - admin doesn' t have this problem - if I log on as Admin, and in the System properties window, profile, highlight the *normal* user account, the "copy to" and "remove" button is grayed out. - there was once or twice if I unplugged the power completely then log back in as Admin, the a…

Reinstalling MDAC on Windows Server 2003 SP1
by Guest Nick van Ogtrop-de Ruiter- 1 reply

I am confronted with an issue on a recovered Windows Server 2003 server whereby the MDAC installation appears to be corrupt. The server in question has been recovered by booting to a 2nd Windows installation, and as a result I fear there is a discrepancy between MDAC files in the Windows folder (C:\WINRESQ) and those in the Programs folder (C:\Program Files). I've run the ComponentChecker and this also finds mismatches, or at least files from 2 MDAC versions (MDAC 2.8 RTM & MDAC 2.8 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 SP1). I suspect the Programs folder files will potentially have been updated whilst the server was running with it's previous installation ... …

Hello, I am running VS on my Windows 2003 R2 SP2 file server. I see the service is running and started automatically. When I look at the volume properties and go to the VS it says scheduled every day but most have no record of any VS or just one or two runs. They have plenty of space configured for VS so I'm not sure why I don't see any history. Thanks

We have a windows 2003 LAN with workstations running XP that the system administrator put a copy of i386 on the C drive. Is there a way to restrict access to this local machine folder through the network? Maybe a script of some sort?

2.7TB RAID Volume can only partition 2.1TB
by Guest cmcnamee@gmail.com- 6 replies

Hi Folks, I admit I am most likely doing something wrong. I have a new server with 2.7TB RAID 5 volume (spread among 7 500GB disks), I have a 100GB NTFS boot partition and a 2TB NTFS data partition. I have 743GB of unallocated space left within the RAID container that is recognized by the windows Disk Management utility. If I right click the 743GB of unallocated space the create partition option is grayed out. If I delete the 2TB data partition I see two sections of unallocated space (2TB & 743GB) rather than one large section unallocated space. Could anyone point me to what I am doing wrong here? -Curt

This is a pretty basic question but I want to find out before I try it. I am setting up a new windows 2003 server as an exchange server and want to run 2 network cards. One connected to the Router of my new T-1 line and the 2nd connected to my current LAN network. Will this work and if so is there any knowledge base articles based on this setup. Thanks in advance. Block deleteing of subtree in file system
by Guest JimiBlues- 0 replies

Hi, I'd like to block, in the GUI of explorer, the ability to delete a subtree in one click. For example if you have a tree Root |_dir1 |_dir2 Suppose dir1 and dir2 each have a few documents in each. I want the user to be able to delete the documents in dir1 and dir2 one-by-one or even by using Select All and delete but they should not be able to right click the Root, or dir1 or dir2 and delete the entire Subtree of Root or even dir1's and dir2's subtree. I tried to do this by giving Modify rights Applied Onto Files Only at Root (perms adavnce dialog)--and Read/Write on subfolders. But what happened is: you *can* right click Root an…

Sorry, I posted this initially microsoft.public.security but realized that this might be too generic for my post. ...so i'm re-posting here... Resetting expired or forgotten passwords is getting way to expensive for our help desk. I'm looking for self service password reset functionality for our remote users. This app needs to reset the Active Directory password and have some challenge response built in. Can anyone recommend an application that's solid. Thanks, R

Hello, Customers are purchasing blades with 8GB of RAM and running W2K3 Enterprise Edition. I am seeing build sheets with the /PAE switch applied to these servers to support RAM beyond the 32-bit 4GB threshold. Is the /PAE switch indeed required for W2K3 Enterprise to address 8GB of RAM? Thanks.

Win 2003 R2 sfc /scannow prompts for CDs
by Guest GeoffD- 1 reply

I have a server that has Windows Server 2003 R2 Std (with SP1), which received SP2 via WSUS. I'm having some trouble with the print subsystem, and I want to run SFC. When I do, it is prompting me repeated for media for Server 2003 and for SP2. I tried editing the sourcepath registry values to point to the i386 directory on the local host, rebooted, and reran sfc. Still it prompts for media. I trekked out to the data center and provided the original install CD. Still prompts... I deleted the local i386 directory, and built a fresh install with SP2 slipstreamed onto it. And still I get prompted. I even grabbed the SP2 ISO and virtual CloneDrive to …
