Random loss of network resources
by Guest Snozz- 1 reply

At random my win xp machines will seem to lose connectivity to network shares hosted on Win Server 2003. The win xp machine is joined to a .local domain hosted on the same server as the network drive or Visual source safe database. Logging off and logging back on reestablishes the connection, but this is getting to be a huge annoyance. I seems to occur once a day at varying times. I have made sure that the power settings for my network adapter are set to never turn it off. Event viewer shows this: Event Type: Warning Event Source: LSASRV Event Category: SPNEGO (Negotiator) Description: The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack fo…

Following the steps on this KB: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/b41402c2-c982-4bfb-891e-91b47f211e181033.mspx?mfr=true I created a share that my account has full access to: \\DS1\profiles\jsmith I access the jsmith account in active directory users and computers and under the profile tab, in the Profile path text box I put: \\DS1\profiles\jsmith This is all fine and good but I find that I cannot copy or change the type of my profile on the windowx xp machine. Right now its set to type Local and the Roaming type radio button is grayed out so I can't select it. I logged into the local windows XP machine as the local admin and the …

There is a Server 2003 SP1 server running SQL Server 2005 SP1. The directory C:\Windows\PCHealth\Errorrep\QSignoff\ has grown to 1.9GB. The files inside are .txt and .cab files. I imagine that it is OK to delete the files, but I wanted to check with everyone to make sure that you haven't experience anything detrimental from doing so. Thanks, S

defragmenter is already running
by Guest George Valkov- 2 replies

I understand that running defrag.exe utility on two partitions which are on one and same physical hard-disk is a bad idea. What about defragmenting two partitions from two physical hard-disks in parallel. I think that this will require less time to complete the batch job. 1. Am I correct? 2. Can I workaround that restriction and run two instances of defrag.exe at the same time? I always do this with chkdsk.exe: A script "chk2.bat", when executed it spawns an instance of it self for each physical disk. Each instance checks the partitions of it's disks one by one and notifies the main instance when complete. When all spawned instances complete, the …

Web Services and Scheduled Tasks
by Guest PhilV- 0 replies

Hello. I am attempting to use a Web Service to create scheduled tasks. This works locally, on a workstation running XP, but when I move the web service, or a standalone application to a W2003 server, and attempt to create Scheduled Tasks, nothing happens. I have been researching. I ran across a reference to Action Control Lists and Web Services, dealing with the Microsoft Commerce Service. Specifically, granting full control with the cacls command. cacls tasks /e /g <data_domain_name>\MarketingWebSvc:f, Also, looking on some MSDN pages, it appears that the Web Services are by default created with least privilges, so as to avoid exploitation.

Vista Machines Locking up Network??
by Guest Roman B.- 1 reply

I've been running a Windows 2003 SP2 server with 15+ XP Pro workstations for over a year. No Problems...... then Last Week we added 4 new workstations (VISTA) to our network and now we've been having issues with not being able to get to the internet etc.. This appears to be only an internet access issue. The probelm begins with a vista system (Random) then resonates throughout the network to all sysems. Could my vista machines be creating an issue that locks my other system from getting out? My settings are as follows: W2K3 server DHCP DNS (with external requests forwarded to ISP) GATEWAY points to Router All workstations point to my server for DNS…

print job with long path name fails
by Guest Mark Warbeck- 0 replies
Hi all, I have a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain. When people print a PDF from a web browser, the path to the file as seen in the print queue is quite long (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temporary internet files\<random_folder_name\file.pdf). These jobs stick in the queue and the status says "printing-printing error". The printer (print device in MS jargon) shows no activity, no data light). Usually someone else tries to print and jobs back up. If I cancel the offending job, all the others print. The printer is connected to the server via LPR ports and a 10BaseT network. It happens on a number of printers, most recent…

Network slow after removing old server - Why?
by Guest TSprau@gmail.com- 5 replies
We recently replaced several old servers with one new machine that does it all in one box. Removal of 3 of the servers went just fine, but one of the old servers is causing problems. The trouble-making server was running Server 2000 and was used as a file server. All files have been properly moved, all shortcuts have been changed, but when we disconnect the old server, the network slows down noticeably. When we reconnect the server, the speed returns to normal. I have watched the 'sessions' window for an extended period of time, and I notice that various machines come and go quickly and few are logged on for more than a few moments. It's as if the machines wan…
