High CPU Usage After KB958644
by Guest jason.hill- 0 replies
Hi, We installed the critical update KB958644 on a Windows Server 2008 machine 2 days ago and have experienced a massive increase in CPU utilisation, apparently for the System process. Our performance monitor reports typically showed the web server running in the 5-15% CPU utilisation range for the whole day even under fairly heavy load. For the last 2 days, the CPU graph now looks like an earthquake has hit and we have had to reboot the server both days to reset the CPU to normal. Today, the graph was showing 90%+ CPU utilisation and we were not able to RDP to the box and all web sites were non-responsive so had to get the ISP to do a hard reboot. The grap…

can't find server by address, but can by name
by Guest dave64- 2 replies

Hi. We had an SBS 2003 server crash dues to a problem with a RAID controller card. This is the controller for our network. Problem is fixed. Almost everything works well. A while ago a Windows server 2003 was added to run an appllicaton. All has worked well with it and the network. Now, after the outage earlier, we can see server2 in the network neighborhood just like before. However when we try to run the app it fails saying it cannot find the server. When the app was installed they pointed to it by address - 192.168.16.3\somewhere. In trying to see what is and is not working, we tried the old standby Start -> Run \\192.168.16.3 from a couple…

DHCP will not bind
by Guest darkstar_rising- 12 replies

I have a server 2k3 R2 SP2 which is a DC and I cannot get the DHCP service to bind to the IP address. I have followed this post http://www.winserverkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/windows-server-sbs/45189/DHCP-not-renewing-leases which pretty much describes what is happening to me. when I go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCpip\Parameter\Interfa ces\[NIC''s GUID]\BindToDHCPServer - this key 'bind to DHCPServer' does not exist. Although this is a Dell machine I do not have open manage installed on this server. I have stopped short of restarting the server with a clean boot because I was wondering if the fact that the above registry ke…

SP2 install wanted to replace RAID driver, I said no, now BSOD 7B
by Guest mct@pioneerprogramming.com- 12 replies

The 2003 server has an old Adaptec 2010S RAID card with the most recent Adaptec driver (dpti2o.sys) installed in it from July 2003. The driver is WHQL. It's been running just fine the past 5 years, and I wanted to install SP2 on it to get it up to date. During SP2 setup it said something to the effect that it had a newer mass storage driver for the RAID card that it wanted to use. I don't remember the exact text of the message, thus I haven't been able to google for it again, but at the time I was able to search for it and the recommendations I got generally said not to let it change the driver. I said to keep the current driver and SP2 finished and whe…

Backup/restore strategy for Windows 2003
by Guest midwest_steve- 2 replies
I have one server that I need to backup. I've configured the backup wizard to create a full backup each night, as our server is small (it is for a school with 20 users). The backup is written to a USB drive. I would like to test the restore and have some questions: Do I have to create an ASR disk to accomplish the restore? Can I simply boot into the recovery console and restore? If so, how do I mount the USB drive? Is there a good general strategy someone can point me to? I have searched but must not be using the right terms. Thanks you!

by Guest KSor- 2 replies

A user can "hook up" a drive to the server - let's say F - so that the users F-drive is the servers C-drive. When the user then deletes some files or folders the ydo NOT go to neither the bin on the server nor the bin on the users pc. How can I get a log of "who deleted what and when" on the server ? Best regards KSor, Denmark

How to Restore full system to an Identical Server (2008)
by Guest ThomasAJ- 3 replies
I bought 2 identical servers (1 is the emergency server). So I set up Server 2008 on box 1 and did a full system backup. I was surprised it did not ask for a CD/DVD to burn boot info - not to worry I said. I have now gone thru all the HELP in Server 2008 backup and Technet (OK so maybe I missed some - don't be picky :) ) and I cannot find any info about how to restore to another box. The closest I get is a mention in "Recovering Your Server" about "Windows Setup disc or a separate installation of the Windows Recovery Environment" in the TOOL column. But it does not go on to explain 'how to'. Heck I even looked in my "Windows Server 2008 for Dummies"…

VMs do not start ANY services after migration from XenServer to Hy
by Guest asklucas- 4 replies

Hi Folks, I'm using XenServer 4.x for almost a year now but want to migrate to Hyper-V RTM for a number of reasons. Moving the VMs (W2k3 R2 SP2) from XenServer to Hyper-V works well, different methods are possible (SC VMM 2008 Beta P2V, Ghost Corp. Edition, other tools). However, the migrated VMs boot enormously slow on Hyper-V. It takes 30 minutes to hours until the logon screen, again 30 minutes to hours until logon completes. However, explorer.exe doesn't start. In taskmgr.exe and compmgmt.msc I can see, that not a single service was started, not even eventlog! I haven't found any information on the web with a similar behaviour of Windows! It …

shutdown script
by Guest Sailor- 0 replies

I am trying to disable loopback adapeter with a shutdown script. It appears that when the script is running the network adapter is not found or it doesn't even disable it. I can enable and disable the adapter without any problems when I have not requested a shutdown. It appears that the network adapter information is all "gone" and not available anymore when the OS shutdown / reboot routine has started. Is there some other place I can to get this accomplished earlier before the network information is gone? e: cd \jobs\reboot date /t >reboot.txt time /t >>reboot.txt echo disabling loopback>>reboot.txt netsh interface set interf…

Help!! I need to delete the Windows Update files.......
by Guest AllenM- 7 replies
My C: drive is nearly full with less than 600 MB free space left. And it is all of the Windows Update downloads. I only use 2x18 GB SCSI drives mirrored for my OS and all I basically have on C: is the OS and system programs. Buy my Windows directory is using about 14 GB of the space. C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823182$ Can I delete these? Or move them to another volume in case I need to uninstall (highly unlikely) these updates? I know I will not be able to use Add/Remove programs to remove once I get rid of these but this is my only option. thanks in advance and apprecite any quick post back.

Quick background: Windows Server 2003 Native-mode AD, XP workstations. We have employees in our environment who do not have admin rights on their local computer and are installing Firefox to their systems by pointing the install path to their Documents and Settings folders. Because of this non-standard install, the path to the Firefox executable is not consistent. I have found a way to block access to an executable using a path restriction in Group Policy, but is there a way to block access to an executable by name regardless of its path? (Note: this GPO would have more applications than just Firefox, but it is the example I'm facing right now.) …
