/3gb and /pae switch
by Guest mhowell- 13 replies

I am still trying to completely understand this and I find conflicting information. If I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 8 gb of physical ram and an application that will take advantage of memory above 2 gig would the following make sense. Use the /3g and /pae switches in the boot.ini. 3 gb would goto the application and by using the /pae switch the 5gb remainder would goto the operating system. Is that correct?

DNS Setup Changes …
by Guest Sanjay Mehta- 13 replies

Hi, I am trying to sort the DNS setup. We are using windows 2003 and exchange 2003. The current setup is: Exchange Server is the primary DNS server while two domain controllers have the secondary DNS. Also funnily enough the two domain controllers have AD Intergrated reverse zones, while the primary DNS server has its reverse zone which is primary (not AD intergrated). My proposed goal is to AD Integrate the DNS. These are the steps I am taking in order to get their: 1) Go to the forward zone i.e. domain.com -> General and change the type from primary to secondary. 2) corresponding go to the domain controller. Locate the forward zone i.e …

RE: Administrator Account (Local Policy)

RE: Administrator Account (Local Policy) Greetings all, I have an interesting problem, I cannot use the administrator (user) account to log on to my SBS 2003 R2 locally. I get an error that says local policy does not allow logon. This problem is with the user-administrator, not the group because other administrator accounts can logon on just fine. Can anyone shed a little light on how I can fix this so I can get back to using the 'administrator' account? Thanks for the help. -Lumpjaw

Connection reset by peer errors
by Guest dnigrin@gmail.com- 12 replies
I'm running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. Around the time I applied the SP2 update, users of my website who needed to download large-ish (4MB - 12MB) files consistently started getting "Posix error, connection reset by peer" errors. Did something change in the SP2 update that would effect this? Regardless, does anyone have suggestions on what to do to fix it? Thx

by Guest littlsm- 12 replies

Folks, we have an issue where our scheduled tasks are "corrupt". The problem occurs after the image has been sysprep'ed. When we right click the task the following error appears and the taks opens as Read Only. General Page Initialisation Failed The specific error is: 0x8007000d: The data is invalid An error has occurred attempting to retrieve tasks account information. You may continue editing the task object, but will be unable to change task account information. The o/s is Windows 2003 SP1 This error also appears even when we create a new task. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening. Please feel free to ask for more inform…

Godaddy Hosting Support Problems

I am posting this here online because I cannot get any straight answers concerning my problems. 1) Description So long and short of it that one folder within the site disappears 'randomly'. Now let me explain. The site has a subdomain http://weddings.stephenkiers.com/ that points to http://www.stephenkiers.com/weddings/. Every once in a while (that I notice at least) the folder starts displaying "The system cannot find the path specified" error. No other details, just that. Then, about 15 min later or so it is back up again and running. 2)Details It only effects the one directory (and its subfiles and subdirectories) http://www.stephenkiers still w…

Is there a need for this?
by Guest Brandon Arnold- 12 replies

Hi, I'm an entry level "admin" for a network in my office. Previously I was a systems admin for a small business and maintained a mixed Mac/XP setup with a server 2003 machine setup for file sharing and an internal testing site for the web devs. Now I'm thrown into an office with a previously configured SBS and I've noticed on all my workstations, all XP Pro, they're set to connect to the server which is setup for AD. As best I can tell, it's completely useless. Everyone logs onto the server but works locally. The only reason I can see that the server is even in the building is to host files that everyone accesses and to run an SQL database for an app we ha…

Using external NTP time source to set time on W2k3 svr in a domain
by Guest dbright19- 12 replies
The time on our servers (and domain) is about 5 to 8 minutes fast. I am trying use an external source to set time in a domain environment. I have been having problems following the directions in the following article: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816042 I have two w2k3 standard edition SP2 servers. One server is the PDC, but when you type net time, it is pointing to the GP server. On the GP server it points to itself. I have made all suggested changes in the above article, and tried different time servers. I even tried using the command line: net time: / set…

DNS settings
by Guest David C- 12 replies

The XP client machines seem to be slower accessing the internet via our 2003 server. I have the client TCP/IP settings to point to the AD server as the primary DNS IP address. When I go to access the internet, I get "Looking up www.Google.com" in lower left and there is a delay. The 2nd time I try with a different www address I get "Waiting for www.dell.com" (for example) and the page is very slow. I tested the DSL speed and all is fine with that, but it appears to be a DNS problem. Am I right? and how can I set client correctly? Thanks. p.s. I tried adding our outside (ISP) DNS as the secondary on my client and the initial internet was very fast.…

Help - administrator locked out!
by Guest Ageing Brilliantine Stick Insect- 12 replies

I have just come back from 6 weeks leave. While I was gone, users at one of our remote branches started getting 'must change password in xx days' messages (they have their own 1-server domain running W2K3). Being users, all they did was to note down the message, and then ring the help desk the day AFTER xx days had expired! Now all their passwords have expired (apart from 2 users who changed theirs in the required time) and they cannot log onto the domain. The really strange thing is that the passwords for the domain administrator appear to have expired also, as well as the 'back-door' account I set up for myself for just such an occurrence. Their server s…

Win2003 SBS - Can't Sop Services
by Guest Chris- 12 replies

Using Win 2003 Small Business Server with 14 clients. When logged on to the server box as the admin, I cannot stop/restart services. Each time I try, it appears that it works (I get the messages "Stopping Service..." and the progress bar, but it then fails sto stop the service. I searched on-line but couldn't find any reference to this behavior. Is this a known issue with Win2003 SBS ? I thought that logged on as the Admin, I should be able to do that. Do I have to do something special to gain that privilege? Chris... -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks
by Guest Masitpro_mcse- 12 replies

Have my ntbackup jobs configured to run twice a day to backup exchange database files and server system state data. Get an error message in the event log: NTBackup error: 'The operation failed. Consult the Backup Report for more details.' Checked the backup log report and it states as follows: Backup Status The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found. What concerns me is I know the scheduled task and backup job is configured properly because when I select and run the scheduled task job from the control panel manually (clicking on it to run), it goes smoothly without a hitch. What is up with that? Help me fix th…

DHCP will not bind
by Guest darkstar_rising- 12 replies

I have a server 2k3 R2 SP2 which is a DC and I cannot get the DHCP service to bind to the IP address. I have followed this post http://www.winserverkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/windows-server-sbs/45189/DHCP-not-renewing-leases which pretty much describes what is happening to me. when I go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCpip\Parameter\Interfa ces\[NIC''s GUID]\BindToDHCPServer - this key 'bind to DHCPServer' does not exist. Although this is a Dell machine I do not have open manage installed on this server. I have stopped short of restarting the server with a clean boot because I was wondering if the fact that the above registry ke…

NTBACKUP log missing
by Guest seanmig- 12 replies

We are using NTBackup (in a batch command) as a PRE command (runs the batch file first before running actual Backup Exec job) on Backup Exec 10. If you run the batch file manually by double clicking or as a scheduled task you can see "backup.log" being created in "%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\" folder. However there is no log file generated whenever the batch file was invoked (as pre-command) by running a Backup Exec job. Has anyone encountered something like this? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Charles

Active Directory Design
by Guest Ricky- 12 replies

Hi At work we thought to build a fresh/new active directory with windows 2003 enterprise edition/exchange 2003 and isa 2004. But we have the following doubts: 1. How should we arquitect our active directory based on organization units (need examples and good white papers) A) Should AD / OU be build based on group policy? B) For better jobs assign should the OU be manage by a group of IT team and other OU by other tecnichians? 2. The actuall distribution list allow to a "normal" user add himself to a group at other group that it doesn't belong. How to correct this issue in the this fresh AD? 3. We have some locations with servers but other…

Hi Folks, I have a 2003 updated server with Exchange 2003 and SMS for Exchange on it. I have cleaned up all temp files, uninstalled all unnecessary programs, cleared my quarantines, etc. I keep slowly losing space still though and I cannot figure out why. I am virus free, no spyware since I have gotten rid of all types of temp files, and cannot figure out why I keep slowly losing space. Are there spots in Windows where there are log files I could clear or anything else at all that might accumulate data over time? Thanks in advance!

OK first of all let me apologize because I know this isn't the correct NG or even the correct forum to ask this question. However knowing that there are still some old IT dinosauers still out there I'm hoping I canfind my answer here. I have this old HP LaserJet 5si MX printer that I had setup about 8 years ago on this network. Worked fine but after a few months we purchased a new laserjet printer and the 5si sort of went unused and untouched. Anyways our new printer (not new anymore) needed to be serviced so we wanted to use the 5si temporarily. Well it didn't work. I remember a few years ago we stopped using it because it would always get a paper jam. So now al…
