Hello, I just received an e-mail from the Partner's program about a "Call to Action" in respect with troublesome issues with Windows Server 2008 that concerns me as for a new client which is interested in buying a new Windows Server to conduct his business. As stated: "Windows Server 2008 has a mechanism to prevent or discourage legacy versions of software from installing and/or running that you do not want to support on this platform." There will be other issues as these workstations are presently operating on XP Professional, and are running Office 2003 application, and intends to operate a CRM application and Quick Book Accounting. Before considering…

Terminal Services vs. Terminal Access
by Guest Lee Jefferies- 6 replies
I am a little confused by server terminalogy. With Terminal Sservices, you have to have TS CAL's and it provides the ability to run applications on the server. That's good and positive and I understand the reasoning and advantages. The other case is RemoteApps. RAs let you run applications and they appear to be running on the clients workstation. This also requires CALs. The distinction between TS and RA's is less clear. They seem the same. OK but what if the only requirement is access to files on the server. Execution is on the clients workstation, with his own application that accesses files on the server. In the intranet environment that is simp…

question about recovering from tombstone
by Guest Adam Sandler- 2 replies

Hi, I have to W2K3 domain controllers which haven't been used for a while. When I tried using them today, I got some domain not found errors on the clients. When I looked at the event logs on DC1, I saw some 2042 and 1388 errors. I tried to force replication between both DC1 and DC2 manually and it failed. Following http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc780362.aspx, I went to DC1 and used repadmin /removelingeringobjects to clobber all the directory partitions which were hosed. I then went to the other DC and it was giving me target not found errors when using /removelingeringobjects. Getting this error is a mystery as I’m using repadmin /sho…

Permissions on large file server
by Guest Andrew Hodgson- 1 reply
Hi all, I have a question about permissions on a large file server we have at the office. We set up the server with a large drive (d:), and have the default permissions on the root of the volume. We created directories in the volume, and defined explicit permissions, blocking inheritance, and removed all the default permissions barring the domain administrator, the groups that need access to the relevant folder, and the local administrator. We then shared the relevant directories out using share permissions as the relevant groups that need access. In the directories holding user profiles and the folders for the My Documents redirection, we created the r…

by Guest JF- 1 reply

Hello, I have a 2003 server R2 SP2. The server service without warning stopped and would not start again. When I tried to restart the Server service I would get a warning that one of the dependent services has been marked for deletion. Another admin in my team went into the registry and removed msicsci as a dependent service for the server service. What is:msicsci? And will removing the msicsci from the dependent list for server service be a long term fix? Thanks

Ntbackup cassette catalog
by Guest rosgiof@hotmail.it- 8 replies

Hello. I've a Windows 2000 srv domain controller with active directory, I do my backups with windows ntbackup on 10 DLTs 40 Gb. I have just replaced all old 10 DLTs with other new 10 DLTs, and last week I saw a difference of the DLTs showed by Removable Storage snap- in and ntbackup: Removable Storage showed 20 DLTs and ntbackup 30 DLT catalogs. With no DLT cassette mounted in the DLT drive, I've removed (eliminated) all the 30 DLT catalogs showed in ntbackups (right click, eliminate) , and all the 20 DLT showed in Removable Storage were eliminated too automatically. After this, I've inserted the 10 DLTs (one after the other) and have catalogued each c…

server not accessible
by Guest Patrick D.- 2 replies

Hi, I have a webserver (windows 2003 standard) within a virtual system. The server wasn't reachable during a critical amout of time and I need to checkout if the reason came from my virtual instance or not. Beside the fact, that the event logs don't show any errors, there is one thing which is strange for me: The security event log usually shows daily events 552 (user: system, source: security), bot NOT during the two days, when the server was not accessible. In fact there is no entry in eventlog/security at all during the time, when I couldn't access my server. The server IS accessible now, because of a reboot by the hoster. If you wouldn't see …

Event ID 51 - Error on \Device\Harddisk1
by Guest ThomasAJ- 3 replies

The full message is "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1 during a paging operation." MS HELP says "If these events are logged regularly on a primary system drive, replace the device." This has happened 8 times in 2 weeks. Where do I find out which disk "Harddisk1" is. I only have 1 disk on the server so I guess it is it. Additional info - I think it has started to happen when I started a ASR backup using NTBACKUP to a USB HD. -- Regards Tom

Group for sysprep OS installers...
by Guest Jake- 1 reply

Hi, We are in the process of sysprepping a bunch of computers and they are also added automatically to our domain in the sysprep process. I would like to use the username and password of another user account than domain administrator in sysprep for security reasons. Which are the minimum group membership such a sysprep add-to-domain account needs? Regular user accounts can only add their computer to the domain a limited number of times, and in our case sysprep will run 100+ times. Thanks for a quick hint on this. regards jake

tape drive in 2008 server
by Guest Ivan- 3 replies
Hi all, I'm having problems using my tape drive under 2008 server in conjunction with backup exec. I'm trying to determine the reason why things aren't working, and I'd normally diagnose this by using ntbackup in 2003, and see if I could at least see the tape drives there. Being that 2008 doesn't have ntbackup, is there a way that I can check whether my tape drive is working with no issues?

Event Viewer has Green Highlights
by Guest David G. Hoch- 0 replies
I'm wondering if anyone else has ever seen this. I opened up Event Viewer on a Windows 2003 Standard Server and all icons in Event Viewer have a bright green border around them. Other than that, everything looks like it's working correctly, but I know that the green color is not normal. This is only happening on one of the two servers on the network. The second server does not have the green highlights. I've run a virus scan on the affected box and Symantec AntiVirus did not find anything. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --David
