Moving file shares to new server??
by Guest WetBehindEars- 3 replies

Our file server has run out of room so we need to move the shared folders over to a new server where users can access them from here on out. We have the server already and my question is as followed. Is all I need to do is use Robocopy with the appropriate switches and change the netlogin.bat script for the users? We have good backups just in case. I was going to run Robocopy on Friday night and change the login script once that is finished. After that I would test from the users workstation. Is there anything I may be missing?

I'm trying to run Lock down IE on a Windows 2003 stand alone Server that is going to be used as a remote desktop server. I want them to be able to go to only certain sites. I've been trying to add those sites into the "trusted Sites" Zone through gpedit. but it doesn't seem to take. Does anyone have any guidance on how to correctly set this up? Thanks in advance.. Bob

admin groups

Hi all: What is the difference of privilege between the Builtin\Administrators group and the Domain Admin group? It confuses me all the time. What is the difference between adding a user into Builtin\Administrators group and the Domain Admin group? I know Domain Admin group is a member of Builtin\Administrators, but it seems the Domain Admin group has more privilege than the other one. Because if I add a user into Builtin\Administrators, he/she can't be in the Local Admin group, which Domain Admin group can do the trick. And what happen if I delete the Domain Admin group in the Builtin\Administrators member list? The Domain Admin group will not funt…

Cannot run executables on servers! Please help.

Ok, I've seen this all over usenet with no real answer but here's my problem with all that I can find on it. Got 3 servers (DC, Exchange, App Server) all running Windows2k3 Standard. I have about 50 systems running WinXP SP2. Just last week I went to install the client for an application when the client executable file came up with the generic executable icon (the blue/white one) and when I tried to run the application it popped back the error, "only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed". Troubleshooting done so far: 1. tested on various machines- approximately 10. Through network mapped drives the error occurs 2. tested via…

Help! Long delays after removing XP Client from Win2003 domain
by Guest richard@planet-richard.com- 1 reply

Hi, I have a WinXP machine that until recently was part of a Win2003 Active Directory domain. Since changing the computer from domain back to workstation (due to death of server), I've encountered very long delays on opening IE, right-clicking on any file, and double clicking word and AVI docs. I can only guess that it's still looking for the server for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Richard

We set up a VPN through our Windows Server 2003 Network and now need to deploy the connection object to a few hundred laptops... Is there any easy way to create a VPN connection object without going through the connection wizard on every single system to create it? I was thinking about deploying it through a group policy in AD to our Laptops Organization unit.. but first I need something to deploy, a file, config script something. Thanks!

FTP with Windows 2003
by Guest RSteph- 3 replies

I'm still fairly new as it comes to working with windows server. Is there a built in FTP system within Windows server, or do I need to download an FTP program? We have a server hosting our website. We are looking to add some shopping cart software for our site. The company we are going through actually ftp's the software onto our server, then we have to give them a login and they setup the software for us, so that we can start adding items. It's been a while since I've used ftp for much of anything though, and I've always just used a downloaded ftp program. I've never tried ftp'ing into my windows server. Any help on this would be greatly appreciate…

I have a computer running XP Pro on a DOMAIN and it's set to go to Standby mode after 1 hour of non use. The problem is that I have different users using the same computer on the same domain. Is there a way to tell XP to logout when it goes into Standby? No matter how hard I try to make it a policy for the user to log out, they can not remember. Thanks

Unable to Backup Server 2003 System State
by Guest Jason Talbot- 7 replies

I have a Server 2003 AD Domain Controller with SP2 that I can't backup the system state on. This server runs Microsoft Windows SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) which is part of the install for WSUS. My main backup software is BackupExec 10d and everytime I try to select the system state for backup it hangs. I then tried to use NTBackup and this also fails with the following error report: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: File Media name: "Backup.bkf created 22/08/2007 at 09:41" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. Timeout before function completed Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff. …

DHCP question(s)
by Guest booker@mgt- 2 replies

One easy one, i think to get out of the way. I read somewhere, where you can change the default behavior of XP dhcp clients to use a Microsoft vendor specific option named Release DHCP Lease on Shutdown. Where do you configure/change that? Is that on the Windows DHCP server. Actually the 2nd question I will make a different post because it is such a crazy scenario.... Thanks

managing auditing logs
by Guest inenewbl- 5 replies

Hi all. Currently my company's server has enabled alot of auditing which makes the security log very big. Hence i would like to know if its possible to automate the task copying the content of security log to a separate file before deleting the contents inside the security log. The reason is i would like to automate this task every week so as to reduce the size of security log, as it would be very difficult to find audit events of a particular day in a very huge security log file. If there are better ways of managing the security logs or auditing, please share with me. Thks in advance.
