Server Migration and Browsing Issues
by Guest celcius233- 2 replies

Hello All. We're migrating our old servers (Win 2003 SP2) to Dell PowerEdge boxes (same OS). Last night we moved our entire file server, updated login scripts via group policy, and did the cut over. The box we moved our data from was the first server in our domain and is a DC running DHCP and DNS. It is now ONLY performing those roles (we're a very small business and couldn't afford to split the services). We duplicated the directory structure on the new box, however it is NOT a DC, only a member server with much more horsepower. From the user perspective everything is fine. They can access all their files, our backups are good, etc. However, on …

Modify CIW logon screen
by Guest Harold- 0 replies
I have a completely private network where we perform PXE based installation. After thousands of times of entering usernames and passwords to get to the OS choices, fingers become numb. I know that it is not best practice to remove the logon screens, but how do I do this? is it possible? I have read through the material at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739932.aspx around designing custom RIS experiences, but it recommends not to remove the logon screen, presumably for security purposes which, again, are not a concern here. Any help is appreciated. Harold

Can't Uninstall Workstation Programs After Server Crash
by Guest JBradshaw- 2 replies

We have a small office with 5 users. Single-server environment running SBS. One of the principals of the company left, taking the server with him. It was rather abrupt, but the users are now getting by without a file server or domain controller. However, we are experiencing some problems when they try to install or uninstall software on their worksations. During the uninstall of, for instance, Adobe, they are told that the setup program can not locate \\oldservername. I have tried running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, but even it won't install, saying it can't find \\oldservername. The users are still logging in to the domain using cach…

A question about using Low Level I/O API to read/write binary file
by Guest Bill David- 1 reply
I use Low Level I/O API (_open) to create a binary file. Then I use _chsize to set the size of this file (a big size). And then I _open this file for reading (get fd1), and _open it for writing (get fd2) and _write something to it. After that, I _read something from the beginning with fd1, but find: 1.I have written 65535 bytes to the file; (with fd1) 2.But I can only read 126 bytes out with the 3rd parameter as 1024. (with fd2) Is it possible? How to avoid it? Note: 1.Everything should have been done in a single thread. 2.I am writing an extension for another product, I must use fd instead of FILE* that's why I use Low Level I/O API instead of buffered FIL…

Hi all, Im having a funny few minutes. In order for my logon batch amnd small vbs program to run at logon and for the GPO to enforce desktop wallpaper images, they must be in an accessible shared folder. My worry is; what is to stop a savvy user from finding those shares and altering the wallpaper or logon scripts/vbs..? Is it possible to secure these files from general domain users access but still leave them available during logon..? Thanks all, I couldnt find any answers online so far. Rolf

Remote Perfmon Anomaly
by Guest da crusher- 3 replies

Hello All, We are running Windows 2003 SP1 32 and 64bit. We are running into an issue when a specific server ( 64 bit, active node of a sql cluster ) is accessed remotely through perfmon to check any Logical Disk properties, certain disks show as "HarddiskVolume6". When checking these properties locally through perform, they show correctly. I have checked another cluster active node setup identically and it works properly. I have checked perfmon from either 32 or 64 bit machines with the same result. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance!!!

Windows - Jobs, Interview Questions, Certification
by Guest Naveen- 0 replies
Hi, In the very fast moving IT Industry, there is a need for the people to keep a note of what is happening in the field, what are the latest Jobs available and in which technologies they are available and what companies and also in which cities. And also when applying for Jobs, it is obvious for people to look for Interview Questions in their Technologies and if they are able to find it all at one place, then they can concentrate on studying or doing R&D further on those questions and answers available. And for a better pay pack people are always in a mood of doing certification and at that time they are on a lookout for certification material an…

Faxes Not routing to e-mail via fax server
by Guest KeithSimon- 0 replies

Hi All, I'm not sure where I should post this, so please let me know where I can/should redirect if necessary. Here is my problem: We have a incomming faxes routed to e-mail via a fax server. Somehow, phone lines got crossed and incomming faxing went down. When the phone company rectified the problem, incomming faxes are now only coming in via hard copy on the fax machine. I've been staring at the configuration settings of the fax server but having never done this before, not really sure what I should be checking for. Would appreciate anyone help in pointing me to the right direction getting this resolved. Thanks! Keith

by Guest Günter Krembsler- 5 replies

Hello, we have two sites, connected via vpn to our main site. On the remote sites we have a regular, daily 2k3 backup. Every Friday we want to copy the "friday.bkf" to a share on our main site. copy and xcopy always stopped (this happened on both sites!!!) - even robocopy has a problem: Error 64: "The specified network name is no longer available" (ERROR_NETNAME_DELETED). As we used it this way: Source : d:\backup\ Dest : Z:\ Files : Thursday.bkf Options : /V /TEE /COPY:DAT /Z /NP /R:10 /W:30 the job restarted. But the created file is invalid. Tried Q325487 without any result. No entries in event logs, helping to solve th…
