Installing x64 to replace Server Standard R2 32-bit
by Guest TomSullivan- 2 replies
I'd like to upgrade an existing server to 64-bit; I want to use more than 3.5 gigs of ram. (Without having to buy new software.) The current server is running on an OEM install on an HP server. If it's anything like XP, I would normally need an OEM install CD to match the key. I've upgraded Vista computers to 64-bit and used the same license key, will this work for Server? Anyone know where I'd get the software? Thanks for the help!

We are migrating to a new Win2K3 Server. We are using Symantec Antivirus 8. I have installed it on the new server and switched the workstations to connect and get their updates from the new server. The old server has quite a long list of exclusions. Does anyone know where the list lives (I didnt see it in the registry) so that I can import it or copy that config file to the new install? Thanks

2003 DC hangs at applying computer settings
by Guest MSNewsgrp- 2 replies
I have a strange problem. 1 of 2 DCs (not the PDCe or FSMO) rebooted/crashed yesterday and it looked like a power failure as the reason came up unknown and there were no errors/warnings in event log. I also checked the HP logs as this is a Proliant server ML350. I removed the network connection and it booted up OK- notwithstanding the expected errors. I was able to start the sevrices manually and get the DC online. Now I am trying to find the problem. I am leading towards a GP cause. The only possible issue was that it had been pointing to itself as the time source and not the PDCe. I corrected that but didnt reboot yet as I am letting it …

I am a bit confused by the kerberos help message. there is no web services on this server but I get Event Type: Error Event Source: Kerberos Event Category: None Event ID: 4 Date: 2008-08-07 Time: 07:53:35 User: N/A Computer: mysvr01 Description: The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server host/mysvr01.mydomain.local. The target name used was LDAP/fbce4a49-6f53-42dc-b997-322b82a349e0._msdcs.mydomain.local. This indicates that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named machine accounts in the target realm (mydomain.…

It is the exchange sever, file share server, and the internet dns/ gateway. Thanks for your help.

WMI errors
by Guest dwhagerman- 0 replies

Getting quite a few WMI errors . I did not check to see if these errors were present before the upgrade, but I did look after upgrading the server to 4GB of RAM. The /PAE switch is in the boot.ini, but seems to make no difference whether or not that switch is present. Some samples of errors are... Event filter with query "select * from MSMCAEvent_PCIBusError where (type = 2147811410) and (LogToEventlog <> 0)" could not be (re)activated in namespace "//./root/WMI" because of error 0x80041010. Events may not be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. Event filter with query "select * from MSMCAEvent_MemoryError where (type = …

Most services does not start
by Guest Ola- 5 replies
This problem occured the first time first of august. I belive it was after automatic updates. When starting the server the following message pops up: "At least one driver or service failed to start during system startup." When looking in Services most of the automatic services are stopped. It is not possible to start them. After some searching I found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956189 Thought that was the problem.. But it does not work after reserving ports and uninstalling updates. Its also recommended to reinstall SP2, but it seams I can not do that since the "cryptographic service" is stopped. Any advice?

how to stop shadow copy recursive mount points following
by Guest forum.ben.yosef.mail@googlemail.com- 0 replies
- 175 views
Hi, using server 2008 (32/64 version) i noticed mount points are recursive followed especially in this case (see steps 1-2), has anyone knows how it can be stopped? step 1 ) mounting shadow copy of volume X on volume X step 2) create additional shadow copy of the same volume X and mount it again on volume x(different location) as result the second mounted shadow copy(step 2) contains the first mount point of the previous shadow(step 1) 1. in server 2003 the behavior was different, mounted shadows where not followed 2. now the first mount point as two paths, the original and inside the second mounted shadow copy 3. after few steps a…

Wanted: More Advanced Administration Tool(s)
by Guest Yarik- 3 replies

Hello, Can anyone please recommend any software tool(s) that could help an administrator (Windows 2003, Windows XP, and eventually Windows Vista) to quickly find answers on questions like these: (1) For a given computer, show all the resources (files, folders, registry entries, etc.) that have any permissions/restrictions specified for a given account (local or domain-level account, user or group)? (2) For a given resource and account, show all the effective permissions AND WHY EXACTLY EACH OF THESE PERMISSIONS IS WHAT IT IS? Ideally, the tool should be aware of implied permissions too (like a resource owner's implicit permission to change permission…

No network connectivity
by Guest HeadNerd- 4 replies
I have been trying to install 2008 on a variety of platforms: AMD, INTEL x86 and X64, Virtual Server, VMWare and anything else I can think of. I can't seem to figure out how to get the network to connect. I've tried it on machines with 1 and with 2 adapters. No difference. I keep getting "Unidentified Network", no DHCP just APIPA. When I use a static IP I can at least ping the router/cable modem, but can't even ping by IP beyond the router. I'm obviously missing a fairly simple step, but I just don't see it. Any help for the terminally IT blind????

UNC paths and the Windows Redirector Service
by Guest joshsackett- 0 replies
Hello all, I am performing a test using a UNC path to access a local drive. An old Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328252) entitled "Performance Degradation When You Use UNC Path Instead of Drive Letter for a Local Computer" tells me that my problem (as noted in the title) was fixed with a Service Pack update to Windows 2000. My assumption would be that this problem is not supposed to occur in Windows 2003. Either that the Redirector service is no longer used when accessing a UNC directed to a local drive or possibly that the performance issue was cleared up. However, I experience a massive performance degradation using this setup. I c…

dell poweredge 350 and windows server 2003
by Guest rtshurmur- 1 reply

Could someone help me? I am a computer student. I have a poweredge 350. It is 1 Ghz with 256 MB RAM. Currently it has no operating system. When I try to load windows 2003 server standard edition, I goes fine until I get to the Welcome to Windows Setup screen. This is the screen with the options to start windows setup, to repair with recovery console or to exit windows setup. After about 5 seconds the computer shuts down. I tried replacing the hard drive 20 GB with a known good one 160 GB and I received the same result. When I don't load an Operating system disc, the system will go through BIOS and stay on (for at least the half of an hour I tested it). For…

Any references? Thanks Carlo

I've got a problem with server security... and I know little on the subject and could use some advice. Recently my server (Windows 2003, running IIS6) has been the victim of massive login attacks... by that I mean they event viewer shows a massive number of failed login attempts, often thousands at a time! Here is an example of one of those events: Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: Admin Domain: AXXXXXX Logon Type: 8 Logon Process: IIS Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Workstation Name: BXXXXXX Caller User Name: BXXXXXX$ Caller Domain: AXXXXXX Caller Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7) Caller Process ID:…

Partition size for Server 2008 Core install
by Guest Richard Perry- 3 replies
I am curious what size partition others are using for the system drive? I have seen some indications that 4GB should be enough, however I have also seen statements that it needs to be large enough to hold the pagefile. However, I have noticed that Server 2008 puts the pagefile on the 2nd partition if available, so is this really a consideration? I have a 32GB server, and I am preparing a Core + Hyper-V. Since I am not using shared storage at this time, I want to maximize the amount of disk space available to the VMs without compromising the host OS. -- Richard Perry
