Permission Issues
by Guest Brad- 1 reply

I setup a user to be a "member of" 'Sales'. I've applied a script to automatically map the "sales" drive. The user can access the mapped with no problems. The problem I run into is when I try to access a share drive to setup our database, it is saying he doesn't have permission. He is a domain user and should have access to it. Any idea of what it can be? Is there an event log I should be checking for? I've tried deleting the user and re-adding them but that didn't work. Would a simple reboot of the server help? Thanks,

Remote Access Help!
by Guest Candace Sparks- 2 replies

I am new at setting up remote access. I have a client with a Main office and a Branch Office. The Branch office has two computers connecting now using GotoMyPC to two computers at the Main office. These two computers have the Software running on them, and the database is on the Server. It works, okay, but now they are going to add two more computers to the Branch office, so connection will have to change. Will they be able to connect just using Terminal Server and RDP, or will they need to have a VPN set up,also? Thanks in advance for your help!! Candace Sparks

Disaster Recovery model with minimal down-time
by Guest Lito Kusnadi- 0 replies

Hi, I am trying to collect some ideas for disaster recovery model suitable for my environment. Hopefully someone can give me hints on this. I have a blade server with SAN running windows 2000 server SP4 as 2nd-ary DNS, fileserver, and print server in active directory environment. I got shipment of a server (stand alone, not blade) from the parent company, with quite big hard drives (1Tb). Due to plan changes, the server is available for "anything". I was thinking to utilise this server as disaster recovery server. I was thinking a way to incorporate the disaster recovery that could be tailored to my current environment with minimal configuration (hopi…

Lost Administrator Tools
by Guest JeffB- 1 reply

We needed to load the latest Netware client on a Win2003/SP2 server for a password sync app we'd like to use. Since then, we no longer have any items show up in Administrator Tools - either from Programs/Admin Tools or Control Panel/Admin Tools. Any idea why? We've also uninstalled the NW client and the results are the same. Jeff

system user account and file permissions
by Guest runner7@fastmail.fm- 1 reply

I am trying to find out what the best practice is for the default system group and file permissions in Windows Server 2003. What I mean is, it seems to have full control permissions by default, but what are the security implications of this? If you want to restrict a share access to a single user, for example, is it best to leave the system account with the full control or take it out? If you take it out, do you get better security? If you take it out, do you lose needed functionality? Thanks for any help with this.

gpt.in Access is denied. Group Policy processing aborted
by Guest Mike Bailey- 4 replies

My server is Server 2003, SP2 It's the PDC, DHCP, and DNS server. I also have another server which is the Backup DC. I've been getting the error below every 5 mins for the past few months. The error indicates that "Access is denies" to the gpt.ini. I have not changed any permissions on the sysvol folders myself. Below are the permissions from the file level on up. I hae no idea what is causing this and it doesn't seem to have an obviouse affect on anyone since there are no complaints from the usres. File - gpt.ini --------- Administrators: Full, Modify, Read&Execute, Read, Write Authenticated Users: Read&Execute, Read Group Policy Creator O…

Printer Remains Offline
by Guest Ron- 0 replies

I'm usaing a Windows 2003 server SP2 as my print server for over 20 printers. Everything was going fine until today when my HP Color 4550n printer is showing that it is Offline even though the printer says that it it s ready. I can ping the IP address to the printer, my MAC users can print to it but my PC users cannot. I even changed the IP address and it still says that it is Offline. What can I do to bring this back online - not sure if this is a network issue or not? I did just install SP2 on this server over the weekend with no issues.

I'm trying to put together a checklist for network and Win servers maintenance. Basically something to generate some paperwork to keep management happy. Does anyone know of a decent template that I could use? I've already got some lists put together based on what we currently do with the servers. Thanks.

Anyone know of a decent website that outlines how to create basic performance monitor alerts via email? I'd like to be notified when the total processor time on my DC is above x% or available disk space on my Exchange box is getting low. That kind of thing. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Thanks, JM

by Guest Andy Weedman- 0 replies

Hello, I use NTbackup to backup my files and system state on the server I have at my home. I do a monthly normal backup to a file on an external hard disk connected to the server via usb. As any good server admin does I wanted to test that my backups were good so if my server ever caught on fire and I lost everything I would be fine. I downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and installed w2k3. Once installed I brought the server up to the current patch level via windows update. Next I connected the usb hard drive to the virtual server and tried to do a restore. When I tried to open the backup file on the external hard disk I recieved this erro…
