Applying RDC Membership to Multiple Servers
by Guest JT- 1 reply

I am in the process of creating a restricted Server Management group. I have the group configured with limited permissions however because they are in the user group they cannot logon to server consoles with the remote desktop logon right. I have 80+ servers and obviously this would be a tedious task to add the group the local RDC group of every server. I have added the users to the AD remote desktop built-in group but that doesnt seem to work as it would adding the users to the servers local rdc group. How can this be accomplished? Im sure Im overlooking something simple. Thanks

Windows Server 2003 backup
by Guest M Skabialka- 6 replies

Rather than writing a new scheduled task every day, I set up a revolving set of backups, using the same tape three or four times then changing it. There's a MON-WED tape and a THU-SUN tape. The first day the tape is initialized, the other days it appends. There are six tapes to cover three weeks. However, if there is a holiday and no-one to change the tape, it initializes the tape on the Monday, writing over THU-SUN, but the appends on Tues and Wed do not run. It seems they will only run on the particular tape that was in the server when I set up this repeating scheduled task which happens every three weeks on those days. This is the task that did not …

Increase maximum file path length
by Guest Andrew Story- 3 replies

Hi NG, I have recently changed the way my Org uses home directories. They used to manually create a share and map a drive to it, then redirect my docs to the mapped drive. It's now setup to use folder redirection via a GPO and redirectsm y docs to a server share. Problem = some users document paths are more than 255 characters and word/excel etc will not open these files, is there a way to inncrease the maximum file path size ??

How to Use GPO to disable Automatic Updates
by Guest circulent- 1 reply
Whenever we get new WinXP Pro computers, sometimes we forget to change the Automatic Updates settings within Control Panel to 'Turn off Automatic Updates.' Sometimes it's left at the default 'Automatic (recommended).' By doing so, each computer still downloads updates from Microsoft's web site, even though we're using WSUS through Group Policies. Is there a way to automatically change this setting so that 'Automatic Updates' is disabled, but WSUS still applies? Thanks

Improve speed print server
by Guest Smiley- 10 replies

On our 100mb network I have a W2003 Server with a Firewire Printer shared directly. I can copy files to the printserver at 8-9 m/sec but all print spooling happens at 3m/s maximum. If I print to the Imageserver over Gigabit, then the speed goes up to about 8-9m/s but It's still nothing in comparison to the file copy speed of 30-60m/s. Have tried different servers eg: shared on XP etc and different shared printers. 2 Questions. 1 Why? 2 Can we speed this up?

Windows 2003 Mirror and Boot Partition
by Guest Smurfman- 5 replies

I created a mess for myself by doing the following: On a system with 2 18GB mirrored drives there was a windows 2000 server install. SCSI ID 0 SCSI ID 1 I wanted to install windows 2003 on a fresh pair of SCSI Drives SCSI ID 4 SCSI ID 5 So I booted to my windows 2003 server, standard CD rom and proceeded to perform a fresh install of W2K3 on SCSI ID 4 a new 73 GB drive. The install went great, created my mirror set (soft mirror) *** I went wrong by leaving the original SCSI drives in place, since the boot info was written there (boot.ini) ntldr, and ntdetect.com So I thought, hey no problem, copy the files, modify the boot.ini to include my d…

2nd Request: Repairing IE6, Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
by Guest Bob Felton- 2 replies

Original Post: Thu, 06 Sep 2007 22:41:13 -0700 After building up a "2003" server, I updated IE to V7 via Windows Update. However, I found an application (McAfee update "puller") that did not work properly using IE7, so I uninstalled IE7 to revert back to IE6. Now, the offending application works OK but IE6 isn't working well otherwise. For instance, I can't use it to administer my Linksys router or any other device that has a web interface for administration. IE6 on the previous Windows 2000 Server machine worked OK to administer those devices. What is the procedure for repairing or re-installing IE6 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 (installed as such fro…

Forefront Client Security installed on File/Application servers?
by Guest Richard Perry- 1 reply
My CTO is looking for specific evidence that installing Forefront Client Security on a Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise R2 SP2) file server is a necessary step. For the last 2 years, we ran NOD32 on our servers (and clients), but have recently migrated to Forefront. Can anyone point me to documentation that states that FCS is a valid software package for a file server? I can see it is a supported client, meets the system requirements, but I can't find anything that says "You need anti-virus on your servers, and FCS is a good choice for that". Richard

Windows Updates and Time
by Guest stosti- 4 replies

I have a domain with a single domain controller. There are ~12 XP machines as domain members. There is two problems. 1) Automatic Updates under System properties is completely grayed out. I can't change any of the settings. I checked the domain controller group policies. They are not disabled there. I also checked the registry keys. They are set in such a way that according to the Mocrosoft tech article everything should be normal. Where else could automatic updates be disabled? The service is set to automatic and started. If you kick updates off manually it works fine. 2) The system time is wrong on all workstations randomly during the day…
