Vista Offline Files - Can't Exclude Subfolders
by Guest craigfreyman@hotmail.com- 1 reply

I'm syncing a folder for offline use and would like to be able to uncheck certain folders/files from the sycn. Every subfolder has the "Always Available Offline" greyed out with a checkmark. I have tried to enable the local group policy: User Config --> Admin Templates --> System --> Folder Redirection --> Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline But it seems to do nothing after a gpupdate /force. I know in XP this attribute was under Offline Files and they seem to have moved it. Anyone know how to allow me to uncheck certain folders/files? Thanks!

Excessive disk activity
by Guest Gerald- 3 replies

We have a server running Server2K3 that has excessive disk activity. Disk drive is so busy that normal browsing on the serve itself is slow. It is a 3Gig Pentium processor with 2Gig RAM and 160 Gig HDD. We have an email app and WSUS-2 running. Neither of these apps are very active and even if they are disabled the disk activity does not cease. When we run "DiskMon" it shows continual write activity, but I cannot determine file names to try trace what is happening. Any suggestions as to how i can resolve this. I am considering reformatting and re-installing Server 2K3 and the apps. Thanks in advance ....

help setting up test lab with virtual pc
by Guest rocketz21- 1 reply

At home I installed Server 2003 onto virtual pc on my regular pc. I would like to add one pc to the domain, a laptop. I would perfer to use my wireless router for a connection for simplicity. What should I be using for my dns settings and ip settings? Should I be using the subnet of my router and dns provided by my ISP or should I be making up those settings? Should I use DHCP? It's not a requirement to access the internet, however, I would like to test some things with SUS. Reason asking, I was able to add the laptop to to domain, but not able to see any of the shares or printers, etc. If someone has experience doing this before, I would like so…

New server required
by Guest Craig- 1 reply

My company is using small business server 2003 but I feel they are outgrowing both the software and hardware. The server is running out of disk space on both C drive and the data drive but has dynamic disks on a raid1 so I am not sure how to copy the operating system onto a bigger capacity disk. They are also up to mailbox limits on quite a few users . They have also just bought 2 other companies and would like to connect them as branch offices (or maybe use terminal services). I am recommending they get a new server (windows server 2003 and install exchange 2007). I would prefer to get the new server ready and then copy any required data from the old befo…

Downloaded and ran the KB926068. It did not ask me where to save the files and I can't figure out where it put them if it did. Have extracted the deploy.cab in system32. The version of the sysprep.exe is 5.2.3790.3959. Do I have the right version for SP2?

Feedback Wanted - Remotely Administering Windows Server 2008 DNS from Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

Feedback Wanted - Remotely Administering Windows Server 2008 DNS from Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Problem Statement: An interoperability bug in the current release of Windows Server 2008 prevents Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers from remotely administering Windows Server 2008 MS DNS Servers via DNSCMD, DNSMGMT.MSC or by using WMI. Specifically, attempts to remotely administer Windows Server 2008 MS DNS Servers from a pre-Vista client will fail with the error "access denied" when the 2008 MS DNS Server is referenced by its single-label hostname or short name. The administration of Windows Server 2003 MS DNS Servers from Windows Vista an…

DHCP clients losing DNS entries
by Guest Christopher A. Newell- 5 replies

Randon (apparently) DHCP clients on my network are losing thier DNS entries. The users report what turn out to be connectivity problems with name based hosts (raw IP related ones obviously resolve just fine.) IPCONFIG ends up revealing a single DNS server entry which is not on my network. I have had several different values, but they all fall in the 16x.X.X.X format. (Today's most recent one was 168.95.1.1) The user PCs are able to reconnect temporarily by executing ipconfig /renew (or re-starting the system.) This is 2003 Server, SP2 (although searcing back in my memory, I seem to recall similar incidents with SP 1 and native 2k3 Server.) Standard…

I am getting the following error in my main DC System event log and am going crazy trying to get rid of it. I have searched the MS help and support, technet, Google, etc. to no avail. This error gets logged every few hours. My IISADMIN service is and has been disabled. Would there be any need to have it enabled? Running W2k3 Standard OS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Creating very restrictive group policy for select users
by Guest mike- 0 replies

Hi, I'm trying to create a group policy that restricts all access on a domain machine with the exception of a few key applications, and I'm having trouble restricting access to the command shell (cmd.exe) as well as My Computer (to prevent file browsing). I've managed to remove all the icons I want from the Start Menu and network access is already limited as much as I want, but when it comes to really 'locking down' the machine for a very specific use I can't figure out where in group policy I need to make some changes. Does anyone know of some good references to use in creating a group policy like this? Is there an index out there that shows where i…

This one is baffling me. We have a fresh install of Server 2003 Enterprise edition with SP2 IE6 and cannot get a single web page to load. The Server has valid IP info and can get responses from websites via pings at the command prompt, so we know DNS and name resoluition is working. However you cann't access any page via its name or ip address in internet explorer. Just for kicks, I put the exact IP info into another server plugged into the same switch port, runniing win 2000 server and it connected to public web pages fine. Any ideas???? Is there a security setting in Server 2003 enterprise or IE that could be blocking me? Dave MCSA…

by Guest Brillmike- 6 replies

I am purchasing a HP NAS device with 12 500GB hard drives. I want to configure this device as one large partition. Is there a best practices I should follow? What is the largest partition I can create? Should I mess with block size? I will be using HP's hardware array to configure the drives, is there a recommended RAID level for windows for a partion using this many drive? This is a storage only device for data that remains pretty stagnent. Thanks, Mike

Disk Mgr and pagefile
by Guest Dan DeCoursey- 0 replies

Hi , I usually have a dedicated drive for my pagefile. So I have Windows installed on C: with the recommended minimum (2048) pagefile on C: ( for system dump) and then I specify to have another pagefile on Drive E: (windows managed) I have seen when using the Disk Mgr snap in that on one drive E: actually says "pagefile" on it and on another server it does not it just says "E: basic healthy" So my question is ......IF I am doing pretty much the same setup on multiple servers......what makes Disk Manager actually tag one physical disk as "pagefile" and othe server setup the same way Diskmanager just says the drive is healthy ??
