Hi. We have two Windows 2003 SP2 R2 servers (different hardware, builds and software) which restart/reboot rather than shutdown when shutdown is selected. I've searched online but am struggling to find any possible explanations. Can anyone advise how I can resolve this ? Thanks, Alex.

help me understand

I have a small office with one server 2003 running as the Domain Controller and DHCP and routing services. It is currently multihomed and works just fine. The layout is: internet -> linksys router -> Server (external nic) -> Internal Nic (server) -> switch -> Client PCs and printers. I've been reading that multihomed DC's are not a good idea. If I change my network to be non-multihomed, what handles all of the routing. Say I want to RDP into each client PC, the PCs are getting their IP address from the DC since it is a DHCP server, the linksys won't know the client IP address. So does the Linksys pass the external requests to the serv…

Small Business Server 2003 logins

I have inherited a SBS2003 server, and it appears a few users have been added and some directories created that, as yet, have no data. The secretary has been moving data to one folder on the server, and has organized that data under that folder, not under the many that were created. I can tell you few other details about the server. The client computers are running either XP Home or XP Pro. I have removed names from the users that no longer exist, and have created users to mirror the current staff. The only computers that can successfully logon to the server are the XP Pro boxes. These machines are not logging onto a domain, but do share the workgro…

Hi. If possible could anyone confirm whether there is any risk of 'damage' to domain controllers if a network of ~20 servers with two (2003) Domain Controller were to be shutdown using a script similar to below : shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\DC1 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\DC2 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\Server1 shutdown.exe -f -s -m \\Server2 ............... I am currently looking at a small network which was previously working without any problems that has developed errors on their DCs to do with replication, dns, dfs etc. The errors only started happening after the above style of script was used to shutdown the system, the servers have been shutdown/restarte…

I have 5 users and email and everhting is working perfectly. Now, I need to let each user have access to their files from outside the network... I do not want to install a VPN (because of cost so far) but I would need some other solution. Security is not a big concern, so is there any web based solution ? Thanks so much Alex

Anyone have pointers to resources on Windows Storage Server, deployment guides best practices etc. Docs from Dell were a little light. All the MS docs I found have a web interface that I can't seem to locate. I would like to set it up right from the beginning so any assistance would be appreciated.

by Guest zehra.mb@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hello, I am developing application on Longhorn. For that i need to check whether Terminal service is enabled or not. In Windows 2003 server there is a registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server \TSEnabled which is having value 1. Using this registry i am able to check Terminal services' status. But for Windows Server 2008 there is no such key. So is there any other way to know the terminal services' status. (Whether it is enabled or not) Any suggestion will be appriciated. Thank you in advance

Server Performance Issues

We have several Windows 2003 Standard Servers (file servers, Lotus Notes server, SQL servers) attached to a Dell SAN. We have been experiencing performance issues, so we started investigating. We discovered that the systems are doing excessive hits to the page file, so we increased the RAM to 4 GB on each server. Despite making the necessary changes to have the OS recognize and use the addition RAM, we are still having the same issues. And the page file is still being excessively accessed. We have performed disk defrags on the servers. After the defrag completes, we can relaunch the defrag analyzer and see that it needs to be defragged again. Can you…

FTP and Windows Firewall
by Guest Chris- 0 replies

Hi I am having a bit of trouble with FTP. I have set up FTP on my server, which works fine, but as soon as I enable the firewall the passive FTP does not work. Passive FTP uses 2 ports to transfer data , one is for the connection (21) and the other random port is used for the actual data transfer. I have setup IIS to use only certain ports using the cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set /MSFTPSVC/PassivePortRange "5001-5201" Command and opened up those ports on the firewall. Now sometimes I can connect and at other times I can’t – I can’t access certain folder either. How can I solve this issue?

Server 2003: No boot menu. How is that possible?
by Guest Milhouse Van Houten- 2 replies

I'm trying to help someone with a new installation of Server, and something has come up that's very strange. He insists that when starting the machine (a Dell PowerEdge 1900) that there is no MS boot menu shown at all. It goes right from the BIOS data to starting Windows. I had him check boot.ini, since I suspected the menu delay entry there had been set to 0 somehow, but it shows 30. We're obviously missing something big and obvious but don't know what it is. Any ideas? Thanks.
