Authenticating users and security without a domain
by Guest AKP- 4 replies

Hi - I have a large client that has decided that they no longer want their remote offices to have their own domains but all the file servers are to be just that file and print servers. I have always set up a local domain and treated them as individual entities with only email being handled at the organizational level. They are a social service agency that I believe needs a level of security to keep their documents and files and local databases secure. (and they SHOULD be HIPAA compliant). How do I authenticate users and set up security in such an environment. Is it possible and am I missing the very obvious? Their systems administrator in co…

Hello, I am having major issues with my IIS and SMTP services. IIS We are running Windows 2003 Server with SP2 and Exchange Server 2003. Exchange is just running on our internal network and not used for external email. The server runs great until I start the SMTP services. Then the CPU usage bounces around from 5 to 99 percent and the memory usage goes through the roof, which bogs down the rest of the server. It won't let me stop the SMTP service and I end up rebooting the server and setting the SMTP service to manual so that it will stop. We have all Windows updates run and Antivirus updated and scanned. Any help you could provide will be greatl…

CRC error in RAID - which drive died?
by Guest Hunter_Thompson- 7 replies

Hi Everyone, I recently was asked to look at a server that was giving disk {CRC} read errors. It is setup as a Virtual Machine {VM ware} server. I was instructed to break the raid (raid-0), perform a low-level format of the three Sata drives that were in the raid array, and then recreate the raid, reinstall Windows Server 2003 (R2) and the VM ware images. The instructions given to me to low-level format the drives should format around any bad sectors on the hard drive. I did all of the above, and now we still get the CRC error. So it seems one of the drives needs to be replaced, but I don't really want to have to buy 3 new drives when only one is d…

Hi All Just want to check if the following procedure is OK to do: 1) On a local XP Pro SP2 machine I create a 'User' user account so that I have 1 x admin user account and 1 x 'user' user account. 2) I log into the 'User' account and config Desktop, Start Menu, etc to the way I want it to look, eg Auto-Arrange, Classic Desktop, 15 screen saver, My Docs icon on Desktop, etc. 3) I log out of the 'User' account and log in as the admin. 4) I copy the NTUSER file from my 'User' account to the default user account and also delete unnecessary shortcuts (eg Outlook Express) from the default user account. I now have a user profile 'look' that will 'kick…

Do I need Windows Server CALs?
by Guest Ben Amada- 4 replies

Hi. Our office is planning on buying a new server to put Windows Server 2003 on. The new server will be used as a terminal server for about 17 different users to connect to. I realize I would need 17 *TS* CALs for this. Our domain controller which hosts AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. is on a separate Windows 2000 server which we will not replace. In this scenario, will I need any additional Windows Server 2003 CALs for the new server other than what might already come with it? Thanks in advance, Ben

Windows 2000 Server - replace with Windows 2003 server
by Guest JPCLYONS- 1 reply

Can anyone point me to a references for replacing a Windows 2000 server with a Windows 2003 server? I need a step by step guide - since this project was inherited and my credentials right now are just an MCP. The current server is in a mixed mode Active Directory structure. It is the PDC, DNS and file server. The new Windows 2003 server will replace all these functions. So far, I have installed the server in the rack, assigned the two NICS with IP's, and gotten all service packs. It is still in WORKGROUP - I have not added it to the domain. Without disrupting logins, DNS, etc, I need to know the sequence of how to proceed. I do not want DHCP …

2003 server seems to be having issues with profiles and citrix lic
by Guest ghutnick- 2 replies

My 2003 server seems to be having a problem with properly distributing user profiles as well as citrix licenses. Each day when my local users login in almost half of them get the can not login in error because their profile can not be found. After several reboots they can login. My citrix users are getting a licensing error stating there are not more licenses available, but there are plenty. After several reboots they get in. The event log does not indicate any errors that would apply to this? What should I be looking for? Thank you

It gets to the "Please wait..." part in booting up and just takes for ever. We have messed with group policies and all of that fun stuff and still nothing. If anybody has or had this problem that knows something it would be much appriciated. Thank you

Printer going offline on terminal server
by Guest Brian- 1 reply

I have a Windows 2003 terminal server that has a networked printer installed for use by a remote user. The user is connected to the terminal server via a hardware VPN, and the printer is located on the remote LAN, and has an integrated IP print server connected to the remote LAN via Ethernet, so the terminal server prints to the printer via a standard IP port. Occasionally (about once per month for the last three months), the printer will go offline. I hear about it when the user calls me to indicate that she can print locally, but not via the application on the terminal server. By the time I log onto the terminal server, I can ping the printer, and its s…

I would like to disable the policy during certain periods of the day, for instance during lunch and enable the policy during working hours. If there is a solution and can you give a good example. Thanks, Bob
