temporarily disable all but administrator login
by Guest Stuart Harden- 1 reply

I would like a way to disable logins, but not as at a regular time, nor on a per user basis. When running updates or other system intensive maintenance, it would be nice to have a message explaining why users are not currently allowed to login. We have remote workers, who do not fit into a regular lock out scenario (do work when you have it and can do it, not because it is "time"), and I am looking for a way to alert them on a login attempt that there is maintenance underway. Scheduled maintenance is a beautiful thing, but there are situations that are more efficiently handled without a consensus. On such an occasion, I can of course lock out each …

SSL Errors in Win 2003
by Guest Arjun- 0 replies

Hi All, I have a funny problem.I have some existing Win 2000 Server machines on which I used to send HTTP requests to some SSL enabled websites. Now almost all of these SSL certificates are expired or have wrong host names in them. This small VBScript code runs just fine in Win 2000 but is throwing exceptions(host name in certificate does not match with servername) in Win 2003 Dim obj As New MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP obj.open "post", "https://servername/test.asp", False obj.send Now I do understand that is exception is correct but I am just wondering how the same library(MSXML 3) ran without errors in Win 2000 server. Was it because of some settings …

Long reboot
by Guest r. wales- 11 replies

I have a win 2k3 server that takes a long time to reboot. It is fully patched. This is not new or recent behavior and as far as I can tell has always been like this. As the server boots up, it spends around 11 minutes 'Preparing Network Connections'. This is a lot more time than our other servers spend during this same phase. Any thoughts or ideas? It's more of a nuisance than a problem, I just want to see if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it or if I will just have to live with it. Thanks.

Licensing; making sense of it all
by Guest itzfritz@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have 3 servers; 2 windows 2000 advanced server, one of which is a DC/ 2k terminal server license server and the other is a citrix/TS box. The third server is Windows 2003, used as a terminal server/2k3 ts license server and ftp. I want to be sure I am in compliance, but it's sorta confusing. The licenses are set up like this: Citrix2k: per server, 15 cals, 2 reached DC2k: per user/device: n/a cals, 9 reached TS2003: per user/device, 0 purchased, 5 reached The 'clients' tab of the licensing snap-in claims that *every one* of my users have 0 Licensed Usage and 1 Unlicensed Usage, for "Windows Server" whatever that means. The 'Products view' tab shows the …

After removing the Cluster Service account from the "Domain Admins" group and leaving it as a local admin on the two cluster nodes, I received the following errors on a few of the virtual network names and the resources attempted to failover after stopping. Once we added the service account back to domain admins, the problem resolved. Raid 1 adding new drives
by Guest KmanfromwestlanD- 0 replies

I have a client with a Proliant ML 330, Raid 1 two drives only and no possibility of more than 2 drives period. They are out of disk space or will be shortly. I have removed as much as possible. Currently, they have two drives each is 34.6 Gigs. I have ordered two 147 Gig drives. I have been told by an HP tech that I can do the followings. 1. take down the server and break the mirror by removing one drive. 2. change the jumper on the new drive to match the setting on the old dirve I removed. 3. install the new 147 Gig drive and bring the server back up. 4. let the server rebuild. 5. Check the Array Controller Utility…

Adding a desktop to domain issue

We have desktops with nic card and wireless card. When I try to join a domain via the wireless connection I get an error saying that it cannot find the domain resource. If I do the same process via the wired nic the join works. Any clues why this is happening?

Installing applications on server - best practice
by Guest Magoo- 1 reply
Looking for a best practice tip here: Need to install Backup Exec on Server 2003 R2. Disk config is as follows: 2 disks mirrored with OS, 4 disks RAID 5 with Data - plenty of space on each volume. When I go to install Backup Exec, it will want to install on the c:\ drive (OS volume). So my question is for a best practice, should i install this application on the data drive (which is a RAID-5 drive) to continue to allow Windows to have sole access to the OS volume? Or, should I allow it to install on the OS drive and share access with Windows? I realize either way would work,, however I'm looking for a best practice. Thanks, Magoo

When I look at the DHCP leases on my Windows Server 2000 standard, I see the first ten leases taken up by IP assignments to things like sip810a3b.mydomain.com. Can anyone help me understand what these entries are for? thanks.

Hi Could somebody point me to general performance optimization techniques (whitepaper) for any Server Application as well for the Operating System called "Windows Server 2003" . I.e. not a specific microsoft server app but a general client-server app. In terms of how to optimize disk and memory access. tuning parameters in Windows Server 2003. If shutting down certain services helps and turn of anything that do not help performance. The harware requirement is given and cannot change: Dual cpu, with dual cores, hyperthreaded with scsi disk , 2GB RAM. Thanks, QA4ever
