When using W2003 NTBackup is there a way of specifying where the log file will be created? I understand the '/L:{f | s | n}' part to create the file, but I can't find a way of specifying where it will be created. TIA. Pete.

admin tool roundup?
by Guest Erik Funkenbusch- 11 replies

Hey there, I'm looking for some recommendations for Windows administration tools, particularly those that integrate Remote Desktop management as well as other tools. I've looked at Smartcode, iShadow and Pointdev. I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations. All of these tools have features the others don't, and i'm looking for something a little more comprehensive. My needs are: I have to manage dozens of servers via remote desktop, and i'd like a single, integrated tool to do this. It should do the following: Manage the RDP connections, including allowing configuration of RDP encryption, and preferrably SSL encryption as well. …

cleaning out dead dhcp servers
by Guest Steve- 3 replies
I had a server die recently and now I've got a situation where the dhcp mmc keeps showing the old server in the authorized servers list. This is kind of annoying but not causing any problems that I can detect. Anyone know how to clean this out? The old server will never be restored. Anything else I need to clean out in this situation (server death)? Replication was cleaned up using sites and services (deleted the dead server) and nothing else seems to be broken.

STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES
by Guest skendric- 0 replies

howdy, Reading files from one of my Win2003 servers fail intermittently during the business day -- and I see this 'STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES' error, packed into a Read AndX Response, during file copies which fail from graphing disk latency and disk queue parameters from PERFMON, i can see that the disks are struggling throughout the day would anyone have pointers on where i could go to research what 'STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES' means? like, what particular OS buffer or queue is starved for space? --sk stuart kendrick fhcrc

Looking for a better backup solution
by Guest odenealr@gmail.com- 4 replies

We currently have 3 servers that we backup (full) every night on tape. An exchange server, a file server, and an accounting server. The constantly growing size of each backup is starting to become a pain to manage (7 tapes total). There is a total of about 300 GB that is backed up every night. The bottom line is: I need a better solution. I would like to look into a backup to disk solution, but I want to be able to have a fresh copy off site every night. Right now I take home the previous nights backup tapes with me every evening. Is there a better way to do this without spending a whole lot of money on a remote backup solution? Thanks for your help.

Data Protection Manager on a DC with tape drive?
by Guest Steve- 0 replies

I'd post this to the DPM newsgroup but it isn't showing up in my list of available groups right now. I have a small network with 2 servers. I have a DPM 2005 disc. Server1 is a file server and DC ("PDC" role holder actually). Server2 is a redundancy and backup server ("BDC", and tape backups). It also stores the boss's non-business files (mostly mp3's, video's and pics). Both servers serve DHCP, DNS and WINS, but no databases or exchange (yet). Both servers are Server 2003 R2 SP2. We normally backup up around 36GB of critical data (includes system states). We would like to have full backups in the future (about 140GB), but we need a new tape drive for that…

Configuring Windows Time on the PDC
by Guest aja44- 1 reply

I am a bit confused on how the correct way to do this is. I am constantly finding W32Time errors on my Root DC. I have logon scripts that run type sync to the Root DC. By default all computers and DC sync time to the Root DC. But how do I setup for the root DC to go to an external time source? Thanks,
