I have been installing a new server to which I have connected a USB external hard drive. For the first time yesterday, I rebooted the server with the USB drive alraedy attached and my heart almost stopped when I got the ntldr not found message. I then unplugged the usb drive and the server booted up normally. Why would the server try to boot from the usb drive--is it probably a Bios setting ??

Windows 2003 R2 and Windows XP Pro Time Synchronization
by Guest jedrek- 2 replies

Hello, I am trying to synchronize the time on a bunch of client workstations and servers to their appropriate Domain Controllers. Eventually the Primary domain controller will be synchronized to an external time source. I have the following information, but I am not sure if it is correct: Open up registry and drill down to the following: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32TIME\Parameters original: type = NT5DS, NTPServer = time.windows.com,0x1 new: Type=AllSync,NtpServer=MCSDC1,0x1,MCSDC2,0x1 Is the syntax for the above line correct or should there be spaces instead of commas? Is there anything else that I need to do in o…

Migrating to 2008

I would like to migrate a WIndows 2003 server to new hardware and at the same time migrate it to 2008. This will be the first 2008 server in my environment. It is used as a file server. Does anyone know of any tools to use to copy the files from one server to the other and retain ntfs and share permissions as well as file ownership? Obviously the tool needs to support 2008. Thanks for any advice.

Maxtor 1TB USB 2 Drive Only Seen As 43Gb?
by Guest Ben- 1 reply
Hi, I've got a client who is running Windows 2003 Server SP2, they have recently brought a 1TB Maxtor Basics External USB 2 drive that they use for backups. If you plug the drive in, Windows sees the drive and it seems to work fine. However, if you reboot the server, Windows will only see the drive as 43gb, and keeps asking to format the drive. The only way to get Windows to recognise the drive properly is to disconnect the USB cable wait a few seconds, then plug it in again. This is a bit of a pain, especially if you are trying to work remotely. I've tried updating the drivers, but it seems to be using the standard microsoft USB hard disk drivers, so doesn't …

File Shares/User names and passwords being remembered
by Guest theinvisibleGhost- 4 replies
We've got a Win2k3 machine set up as a simple File Server (Active Directory not installed/activated) Connecting in using Windows XP machines initially the machines request user names and passwords which is good. However they then seem to store these usernames and passwords. Is there some way of stopping them doing this? It gives two problems, one is that it's a security issue, and two it means the same XP machine can't be used to log into the file shares with different user accounts. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers, Chris.

Group Policy
by Guest ME- 2 replies

Here is the scenario: 2003 active directory with IT OU and Servers built-in OU. IT people in IT OU have a login script in a group policy at User Configuration/Windows Settings/Scripts/Logon folder. When IT people log into a PC the login script executes. However I don't want the login script execute when IT people log into the servers listed inside the Server OU. How do I make it work? I already selected Block Inheritance when I right click Servers OU but it did not prevent the login script from running at login. Thanks.

Experts, I am running Windows 2003 Server SP2, and on this machine, I cannot get the Workstation service to start automatically (thoug the service is set to start automatically). Once the machine boots up, I can log in and start the service from the services panel manually without any problems. I checked the dependencies, and this service is not dependent on any other service. Understandably, other services that are dependent on Workstation do not start up either. The Error log lists the following two entries: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7009 Date: 8/6/2008 Time: 10:12:12 AM User: N/A C…

by Guest Fox1977- 0 replies

I am just setting up a new windows 2008 domain with vista clients. Just doing a bit of work getting the roamin profiles up and running. I have redirected all of the folders to the network shares: \\servername\home$\ and they seem to be running ok. The problem I am having it that when the user logs in a folder is on the desktop with their username on. So when bob smith logs in there is a folder called bob smith. All of the folders inside this seem to be redirecting to the network drives ok. How can i go about disabling this from the desktop? I have had a look in the group policy but i cannot see what it is called. I have found the option in the group p…

Monitoring loss of connectivity of printers via PING or SNMP?
by Guest Thee Chicago Wolf- 8 replies
Hey guys, here's the situation. Occasionally, our 4 HP LaserJet 8150s simultaneously throw a 79.00FE error. I have contended for years that this is someone in networking screwing with the network and some change causes the printers to lose connectivity in the middle of a print job and throw errors 79 errors. I have been able to recreate it by simply printing to a printer and pulling out the Ethernet cable in the middle of a print job. They claim no one is doing it. I say it's either faulty hardware or someone is a liar. I am looking for a way to ping or monitor (via SNMP?) the jet direct card and printer. I thought that if I sent a simple PING every 15-30 secon…

I noticed this weird problem the other day. My primary C drive which has nothing installed on it but Windows is runnign out of space. I have 3 GB of 30 GB free at this point. ITs a SQL 2005 DB server. I've traced the problem to the C:\windows\installer directory which is 20 GB in size. I looked at the files and have noticed that I think everytime I try to run the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 it fails to installed I beleive the space gets used then. I wondering if the install files are being dumped here and not removed since the install never finishes. How can I resolve my space issue and second how can I get this update installed. I'm niot sure where vis…

Remote Desktop to Server 2003 Printer Issue
by Guest jacob@nowhere.com- 6 replies

Hello, I am having an issue where I am logging in to a Windows Server 2003 server from a Remote Desktop Session and have checked the option to use the local printers installed on the PC I am "RDPing" from as resources in my RDP session. Once I get logged into the server I start receiving a huge amount of "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc" entires(print jobs) in at least two of my print queues on my local machine. This happens everytime I RDP to this server and I am not creating any print jobs on the server at all. They never stop being sent and they will eventually bring one of my print queues down till I clear out all the excess print jobs.…
