New computer, several domain users, profile problems
by Guest jude@womenshealthspecialists.org- 5 replies

I have successfully set up new domain users and their computer on the domain. I have 6 users in ADUC, and have not added them as local users on the computer. I added one user, not as local user, but as domain user. I logged on as local machine administrator, and installed software. I copied the local machine administrator's account to the other domain user. When I logged on as the domain user, I did not have access to software and settings. When setting up several users on the local machine do you have to put them on as local users first? This means maybe 2 profiles per person and many profiles. I would love to have some advice!

How to disable "Explore" in the right-click context menu.
by Guest Saqib Ali- 4 replies

Hello All, I am working on to deploy Terminal Services for visitors. I need to disable "Explore" in the right-click context menu. I know how to disable the right-click context menu completely, but that is not what I want to. I just want to remove that "Explorer" item or gray it out. (screenshot at http://security-basics.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-disable-explore-and-open-folder.html ) And now page 2: I also want to disable the "Open Folder" button when you download and save a file using IE. (screenshot at http://security-basics.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-disable-explore-and-open-folder.html ) Any thoughts on how these can be achieved? Thanks Saqi…

Hello All- I have a recovery disk created on a server that had all the settings hardened for DMZ use. I was wondering if it would be possible to run the recovery on a different box? Here's the caveat - the server it was created on was x86 and the one I want to restore TO is x64. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, locoytravieso

Vssvc - No List Writers
by Guest MarkNLA- 0 replies

Recently I have been getting some vss errors such as 80, 8193, 11 and others. Reinstalled SP2 on the server and applied KB940032. This is also a SQL 2005 server. When performing vssadin list writers command, no response. Unable to perform a system state backup. My understanding from reading from some of these postins is to rename some COM+ files, backup/delete COM+ registry entry and reinstall COM+ components from add/remove programs. Is there anything else that I should do?.... Any suggestions anyone??? thx -- Have a Nice Day!

Connect to another location via VPN

I'm running a SBS 2003 server. I'm running a VPN with RRAS. My company has a second location that is linked through our ISP and they're behind the same firewall managed by our ISP. While onsite, I can access machines at both locations by computer name and IP Address. From home, I'm only able to access machines at the site where the VPN is located. Is it possible to access both sites through this VPN?

File and Folder auditing generates to much information
by Guest Steve- 0 replies

Hi, I have configured object access auditing on a SBS 2003 Server. I have followed MS articles, making sure everything is properly configured. 1- Activate the policy and link it to the domain controller 2- Go to the folder in question and selecting a security group (containing only employee, no system accounts) and setting audit on read, write, etc. The folder is on the D:\ drive. The auditing seems to work, actually it's doing to much, user access to that directory are being logged but also Administrator and SYSTEM account access also to files (mmc.exe and store.exe for instance) that are located on the C:\ drive? The customer wants to easily che…

Shared sysvol and netlogon
by Guest Jake- 3 replies

Hi, When I browse from a workstation to a newly installed w2203 server I see the two shares: netlogon sysvol In the netlogon share I can list all the logon scripts and open them, but not modify anything. In the sysvol share I can see all the subfolders (named policies with guids etc and open files), but I cannot not modify anything. Is this normal? I would prefer that 'normal' users should not be able to list folder contents except for the logon file assigned to their account. Thanks for comments on default security settings on these folders / files. jake

<newbie> DNS zone name
by Guest Jeff- 2 replies

Hey my home network consist of 2 computers (winXP and win2k3) Now I'm about to configure DNS on the machine with Windows Server 2003. The goal is to have this computer is the domain controller in my network...and also configure Active Directory on my network okay the problem is with deciding what zone name to use for primary zone. I don't have any registered domains etc.. Lets say I use "microsoft.com" as zone name, would that create trouble for my DNS server? problems like it is confusing microsoft.com with the real microsoft.com... ??? (it may sounds like an overkill to have DNS, AD on my little network, but I do this in the spirit of learning ho…

User Directory NTFS Question
by Guest Dennis Procopio- 2 replies

We migrated a file server, manually. Using Folder Redirection with permissions specified in best practices, we logged each of our users on to the network and allowed Folder Redirection to create each user directory under the "Users" share on the new server. We moved the data into each folder respectively after this process. The NTFS permissions suggested for the Users share (from MS Knowledge Base) were that Creator Owner has Full Control on "this folder only." I'm assuming this was a suggested best practice as MS assumes a new deployment, not a migration, and that anything created underneath there would be under control of the owner. Perhaps I'm wro…

How to move user profiles from system drive to free up space
by Guest Lajos- 2 replies

On one of our production server (HP ProLiant 380D - 2 HD Raid1, C and D partitions) we are running out of space on the system drive. I was advised to move the user profiles from the 'Documents and Settings' folder on the system drive to the D drive. I have already read the q236621 KB article, but before I try the procedure I would like to see if anyone would have any experience with this procedure, or perhaps could recommend something else. Thanks in advance!

by Guest trusty- 1 reply

After configuring a policy in SCW and applying to a DC, the Trend ServerProtect service fails to start upon boot up. The error info is as follows: Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7024 Description: The Trend ServerProtect service terminated with service-specific error 258 (0x102). The serive is still set to automatic start but it is not running; if you manually start the service it will start and run normally. Setting the Recovery options to restart the service has no affect. If you rollback the SCW policy and reset all changed services back to their original states and bounce the server, it will start normally. We have followed the Tren…

Domain Password Change Locks Account
by Guest Jam Dude- 2 replies

Hi All! I've got this recurring problem. 1) A user changes their password on their XP pc connected to a W2003 domain, usually prompted by a Group Policy. 2) The user gets locked out of domain resources, loses all mapped drives, account locked out etc. The user has a "Stored username & password" on their pc. It did not automatically synchronize with the new password. Locking and unlocking the computer does not synchronize password at this point. To recover I: 1) Delete stored credentials 2) Unlock domain account on server 3) Reboot pc 4) User can finally log in ....but this is a big pain and causes the user downtime and a support incident. Th…
