Hi, i am new to Windows 2008 worked with all previous Versions and i like the fact of installing Windows as a "Consoled" Windows like *nix Systems. But i did a full GUI installation to find out what the (new) OS can do for me. Now i want to know if there is a option/way to start the OS only with Core-Services, or whatever you call it. I mean is there a way to start the Server in Console Mode? By the Way, the 2008 Server is a big hit! Thanks in advance,... Phantom drives on passive node?
by Guest John- 3 replies
When I failover a clustered file server, the passive node continues to show the shared resources, but no drive information (i.e. space usage, etc.) and you cannot connect to it (obviously). A reboot cleans it up, but is there a fix for this? It's starting to cause issues w/ our server monitoring software seeing these drive letters that don't actually have drives attached to them. Thanks in advance. (Win 2k3 SP1)

DHCP Question
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

I help with a small system of 25 users and a couple servers. There are maybe 40 IP addresses used on the entire network. The DHCP is filling up. Of the 100 addesses available in the scope, 81 addresses are in use. In the DHCP console, I can only see the 25 or so addresses of the stations on the network. The remainder of the used address are not there. How do I: View ALL addresses in use Force all to renew their lease Thanks, Tom

by Guest Tassie- 2 replies

Yesterday, I got messages saying "threat detected" This happened on on various files. I sent them to the virus vault. Then uninstalled the particular files, then scanned with AVG 7.5. It located more threats which it sent to the vault. I then scanned with lavasoft ad-aware, which found 18 critical objects, which I deleted. But now I can't get the comp to open onto the Internet. When I d' click ie on the desk top, nothing happens. It won't open when web file in links either. I have searched through the AVG help and win help, but can't see what to do to get the comp open onto the Internet. I would "very" grateful of any assistance …

Moving a BDC to a PDC
by Guest dsfseattle- 4 replies

Originally I started with a Windows 2003 SBS 2003 server. Using the transition pack I moved to a fully functional Windows 2003 Server environment. I added a new Windows 2003 Server and set it up as a backup domain controller. Now I want to retire the original server. When I look in active directory I can see that both computers are listed as a domain controller. I try and follow instructions I have found to promote the new server to the primary domain controller, but I cannot follow the directions specified. Also, Server Manager is not found on the new server when I go to all programs, administrative tools. What is happening here?

I want to create some redundancy in my network. I would like to have a 2nd server configured as a 2nd domain controller. When I tried to do this before, i got asked stuff about DNS, I thought last time it automaticall configured itself to be a 2nd domain controller et. anyway can someone give me some pointers on what to do is it possible to have this 2nd DC also serve up DHCP in the even the other DC is down and vice versa? Also would ike it to act as a 2nd DNS server (which is set to forward to the external isp's dns servers) i know id have to put a copy of gobal catalog on it if i want it to be able to handle logins, but i want full replication betwee…

Remote Site Design and DC Configuration
by Guest Neil- 3 replies
Hi, I came across this new design for DC's in remote sites. I have not done anything like this, but I am not sure whether it is the correct way to have done it. Correct me if I am wrong. There are 4 remote sites. Each remote site has a single domain controller and the workstations are getting their DHCP address from the domain controller through a helper address via the router. The workstations gateway is the router and not the domain controller. I am not sure how will the following be: 1. Authentication for users in remote sites? Will it be local authentication or they will it be via the WAN to the main site 2. How will the Group Policy be appli…

Re-connecting existing clients to a new server
by Guest Nick- 3 replies
I'm replacing my 2003 sbs server with a newly built server, again with 2003 SBS installed. My existing client pc's will remain the same, and will obviously have to re-join the new server. The question: Regarding the client side, will I have to join the existing client pc's to the new server by booting up the Pc's in to the 'local machine', and go through the process of "Connect to Server" again? Can I expect any problems when the client PC's re-connect to the new server? Any help\guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

by Guest Nordickiwi- 2 replies

-2003 Standard Edition SP1 -Två scsi diskar. (No RAID card) -Software mirrored -Dynamic disk - 3 Volumes c:\ f:\ g:\ - 7GB free disk Problem - c:\ is 96% full and just realised i can't add som of the free disk to c:\ because of the mirroring. I had counted on the dynamic disk extend feature over the past years knowing that this day would come. But now I can't extend c:\ as I had wanted. Question - can I remove the mirroring and then extend c:\, then replace the mirroring? (After full backup to tape of course)
