Is Hyper-V too complicated for the following.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 10 replies

I want to upgrade to W2008 down the track but in the meantime I want a backup box for my 4YO IBM X206 running W2003. (I cannot get another X206) I was thinking of Installing W2008 with Hyper-V on a new box, and have an area (whatever it's called) set aside so I can use it as an emergency backup for my current W2003. Or is Hyper-V too sophisticated (and too great a learning curve) for this scenario and a simpler product exists. -- Regards Tom

Automatic Printing to a File Name in Windows
by Guest JimR- 1 reply
I have read the article "kbprint KB119256", in Microsoft KnowledgeBase, which explains how to setup a path and file name for a printer that basically has a FILE port type. I am wondering if it is possible to have the filename change dynamically. For example: append some sequence counter. The idea being that in a multiple-user network many users printing to the same printer would not overlay each others files. The prefix would be consistent: "\\server\path\fileXXXX.txt" where XXXX will be the result of some sequence counter generated by Windows automatically.

I have an odd problem. I recently updated my SAV from 10.0.0.359 to 10.1.6.6000 and I had no problems with the server install except for when I started updating my clients to the most recent version. My environment is XP Pro SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2. I updated my clients by logging into the SSC then did a client remote install, my problem lies in only some of the client that are running Server 2003 or XP with these problems 1. "Client remote Installation. The Server (Primary AV Server Name) is not hosting any compatible symantec antivirus (SAV) 64 bit installers for the 64 bit client (host name)" I got around this by logging onto the host in quest…

WHS Windows Home Server
by Guest - Bobb -- 7 replies

I looked and couldn't find specific newsgroup for WHS, so if this is the right group... I've looked around and still wondering: 1. Who / what is the target market for it ? If it's homes with a lot of PC's - it that market really big enough ? 2. Getting HOME server vs. "regular server 2003" ... Would you know ... I would assume that the ISP charges for " a server" as opposed to PC ? My reason for asking is that I've been watching it since release and thinking "what can this do for users that Server2003 couldn't". I thought there would be some software app included / some big reason to "have to have it", but I don't see anything. From the write-ups, it d…

I have a windows 2003 member server on a separate subnet and site from our 2003 domain controller. last week I demoted a windows 2000 server that had issues with active directory. the member server at the other site was working fine. now my 2003 member server at the other site will not hand out dhcp addresses, says it is not authorized. when I access DHCP on this server from the domain controller at the first site, it shows red as unauthorized, but when I try to go to authorize it, it only allows me the option to UNauthorize it, and will not let me do even that. in Event Viewer on the member server I get an Userenv error, event 1053: Windows cann…

MDAC for Server 2003?
by Guest JBradshaw- 3 replies

I've been told by one of our vendors that I need MDAC installed on my server to run their app -- however, none of the MDAC downloads I can find seem to support Server 2003, or even Server 2000, for that matter. Are there versions specifically for server, or is it all one and the same? Thanks

Newbie : DFS : Why a physical root is required?
by Guest redheart27@rediffmail.com- 1 reply

I have a fundamental question that is not directly answered anywhere, hence I seek your help. I wish to understand the idea behind the design. My intention is to learn. This is how I (as a newbie) would expect DFS to be designed. (Assume a Domain environment) A DFS service runs on the DC/member servers. The namespace and other configuration is replicated among these servers. The service will listen to requests from clients and answer them by looking up its data. (a) As per the MS implementation, an empty physical directory structure is created to represent the namespace. Why was this unusual data representation chosen? (b) Why does Active Directory(AD) d…

2003 unexpected shutdown
by Guest Steve Copley- 0 replies

Hello support, We have a Windows Server 2003 x64 system that at seemingly random intevals (anywhere from 5 to 10 hours apart) reaches 100% CPU usage and locks up. The system is running in a virtual environment (Citrix XenServer) with another Windows Server 2003 guest that have no problem at the time of the incident. There are no logs in the virtual host to suggest a problem, aside from a restart taking place which must be manually initiated, the Windows Server does not restart on its own. The system was configured with 4x vCPUs and 2gb RAM. The host has 4 CPUs (Intel Xeon 3Ghz) and 4Gb RAM. The only entry in the Windows Event Log that suggests a …

Windows Server 2003 R2 IIS Will Not Uninstall or Install
by Guest Tom P.- 2 replies

Last year we upgraded a windows 2000 server to Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2. We noticed recently, while trying to install Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, that IIS Admin and WWW Publishing services were not running. Attempting to run the services gave an error which amounted to missing files. I attempted an uninstall via Windows Components but when it asks for the Service Pack 2 disk it then says it can't find the needed files even though they are right there. I've tried every Windows Server R2 w/SP2 we have, I even downloaded the SP2 files extracted them and tried to no avail. The IIS Admin and WWW Publishing now no longer show up in the services. I've…

Another Backup Question
by Guest Ole- 0 replies

Hi everybody, I am thinking about ServerBackup in Server2008 again. Since I have problems with my Promise RAID controller, I would like to switch to an LSI. All these controllers need special drivers to works with Windows. ServerBackup2008 provides the opportunity to install drivers during the restore process. Does anybody know if these drivers are integrated in the OS to be recovered? If not, I would have to instal the drivers first (before backing up) or else I could restore the system but it would not boot because it does not find the HD, right? Or are there any other ways to swich from one RAID controller to another? Thank you Ole
