Hi, I have configured remote acces on a small business server 2003. It works to make a VPN connection on a client computer, but after 3 minutes (always..) the session is disconnected. Sometimes my VPN connection is disconnected also. When I re-open the VPN connection, my session continues. For 3 minutes!!! Roaming profiles slow login
by Guest Thorny- 1 reply

Hi Guys, I have a client running SBS2003 using Roaming profiles for about 10 users. They have been able to log on without issues for the last 3 months. Suddenly, last week, it started taking about 30 minutes to log in with a roaming profile. The DNS settings are pointing to the DC correctly and when I disabled the roaming profile and logged on locally, it only took a few seconds for it to log in. The XP SP2 pcs are receiving the following errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1504 Date: 25/07/2007 Time: 4:41:11 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: SERVICE3 Description: Windows cannot update your r…

pidpropsca
by Guest Dale- 0 replies

I have been finding a file pidpropsca.dll randomly on the root of one of the hard drives on my PC running Windows Server 2003. Also, the Visual C++ runtime files msvcp70.dll and msvcr70.dll appear. The properties of pidpropsca.dll indicate that it is a Microsoft produced file but that is so easily faked that I can not be sure. And in any case, I have no clue how they keep showing up on the root of my D drive. Does anyone know anything about pidpropsca.dll? And why it keeps showing up that way? Thanks, Dale -- Dale Preston MCAD C# MCSE, MCDBA

Can't remotely manage workstations
by Guest Jim at SDSU- 5 replies

Help!! I have a new Domain with 2 2003R2 servers and 3 XP Workstations and 1 Vista workstations installed as a test. The install is still "vanilla" meaning I haven't set any custom GPO's etc yet. In the "AD Users and Computers" MMC, if I right click on one of the workstations and select "Manage", after about 40 seconds of Hourglass, I get the error message "Computer\\computer.mydomain.edu cannot be managed. The network path was not found." For troubleshooting purposes, the firewalls are all turned off. I can ping the workstations by name and the ping shows the correct IP's. If I try to connect using "Net use x: \\computer.mydomain.e…

Write Disk Caching
by Guest Eager- 0 replies

Clean install of Windows Server 2003 (x64 Enterprise Edition), not a DC yet. Copy from another local disk to the boot disk is fast as expected. After promoting (by wizard) to DC, the same operation seems to be 5-10 times slower (depending of many small or fewer large files). Tried to enable write caching (I beleive the promotion wizard disabled it) and got back the initial fast speed. This is not a setting I am very happy with because perhaps big loss may be experienced if power is lost (experience), should of course use another disk for storing "normal" data. Anyway, is this large difference what should be expected (5-10 times slower without caching) or …

Folder Permissions - Locations aren't populated
by Guest kamuiiv- 0 replies

Hello, My apologies in advance if this question has been answered before (didn't find a solution but perhaps my searching skills are inadequate). I'm trying to setup permissions on a network share - specifically on a folder within a network shared folder. I would like to have specific users/groups access to it and deny access to the rest. My first step is to goto the properties of the folder and then click on add under the security tab. Once there I click on the Locations button but the field is limited to just the local system. I can't change the location at all. Any ideas on how to change this? Is this an AD/Group Policy issue? I've found th…

License usage - Event 221
by Guest KBJM- 1 reply

I get this pop up....Warning: License usage for a product licensed in per server mode is nearing the maximum number of licenses purchased. consult the application event log or licensing from the administrative tools folder from more info. I checked the event log and it is informing me that Exchange is nearing its limit of licenses.....says we have 50 licenses and we are using 48 of them....HOW?.....there isn't 25 people working here.....is it still counting users that are no longer employed??....Isn't it going by the client (computers on the network) and not users that I assigned??? Should i be assigning them per user or leave it at per server?

network security

Recently I have been nominated to take care of a network after a company that we hired bailed out on us. I had some training in the past with windows server 2000 but have forgotten alot of it by now. This is what I have. I have DSL coming in to a modem/4 port router which is provided by the dsl company. From there I have one ethernet cable going to a set of linked 24 port switches. All "admin" computers are wired to these switches including a Windows 2003 server machine. There are also several internet access only machines wired here for "clients" to come in and use. I also have one cable going from the first modem/router to a wireless access point,…

Remote file sharing for large files
by Guest Coleman- 1 reply

We've got about 6 or 7 users in our office that work remotely on occasion doing CAD and drainage work. Does anyone know of a good solution for remote VPN users to deal with large files; like CAD data from AutoCAD and Microstation? I've entertained the idea of a terminal server before on Server 2003 to have them log into for that kind of work, but haven't gotten deep enough into it to know how well that works... especially with bloat-ware Autodesk products. If these users were only dealing with smaller files and lightweight software, I'd be fully confident in a TS solution. Having them copy the data to their local machines over VPN/FTP is not really a very g…
