ntbackup issue using /p flag on Server 03 with an LTO Ultrium 3 drive
by Guest Gareth Howells- 0 replies

I have created some batch scripts which run as scheduled tasks on one of our servers. There are 2 scripts for each day, one of which backs up to a file for the onsite backup, the other of which backs up to the server's tape drive for the offsite backup. The onsite backup script works fine, using the following command: c:\windows\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Backup Scripts\onsite.bks" /n "Tuesday morpork onsite set created %morporkdate% at %morporktime%" /d "Tuesday morpork onsite set created %morporkdate% at %morporktime%" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:off /m normal /j "Tuesday morpork onsite" /l:s /f "M:\Tuesday.bkf" where %morporkdate% and %morpork…

Must W2003 BACKUP utility use the Floppy Drive.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 4 replies

It seems the floppy drive A is not working. I get "No ID address mark was found on the floppy disk" whenever I put a floppy in. This problem was discovered when I did a FULL BACKUP using the BACKUP utiliyt in W2003. So, does BACKUP have to use the floppy or can it write its files to CD. OR is there a good backup utility on the market that does not cost $1000 just becasue it's used on a server. (the server is a very simple setup and has 5 users on 1 app thru Terminal Services). I am loath to open the guts of the server and install another floppy - or am I being too cautious? OR Is there a setting on W2003 to tell it to use the floppy or something like…

NtBackup: "The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete"
by Guest Simone Meggiato- 5 replies

Every night I was used to perform a scripted backup of the virtual machines (VMware server 1.x) that are on a Windows 2003 host server. The VMs are suspended just before to invoke ntbackup and restored at the end. Since a couple of weeks i get errors like this in the ntbackup log: 'WARNING: Portions of "\Virtual Machines\EureSolver\EureSolver-flat.vmdk" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.' It is always related to the large virtual disk .vmdk files. the invoked ntbackup command line is: 'start /wait ntbackup backup "D:\Virtual Machines" /J "%NAME%" /T "%NAMETAPE%" /N "%NAMETAPE%" /D "%NAME%" /V:no /L:f /M normal /HC:on /SNA…

Hi, I'm using robocopy.exe to move old files to another server, I have started copying files that are create from 31/12/2000 and before. Now all the files do get moved across, but it will also create the entire orginal folder structure, so I get folders with nothing in them because no file meet that age, so why does it create the fodlers? eg robocopy.exe G:\marketing F:\Archive\Marketing\2000 /E /copyall /move /minage:20001231

backing up questions?
by Guest lenny- 2 replies

Hi, I have a Windows Server with another Terminal Services Server. I have setup a backup on the server to happen every night with a DAT tape. As you might have noticed from earlier posts this is now getting quite full. I have also noticed that there isn't a backup facility on the TS so the main server is backing up C and D on that machine which basically includes all the shared folders that have been setup but nothing is backing up the Database folder on TS or any of the users files under C:\Documents and Settings\User. Each user is using pop3 email through outlook via their TS login so I suppose their emails aren't being backed up either. Any suggesti…

Server shuts down randomly
by Guest smallbizguy- 2 replies
Our Windows 2003 server randomly shuts down. It happens approx 3 to 4 times per week usually at night. No helpful messages in the event viewer. One thing that I have found strange is that when you select Restart on the server the server shuts down and when you select Shut Down the server restarts. I have already replaced the memory but that did not help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Windows 2008 & Win XP Client blues - Network name cannot be found
by Guest Ziga Jakhel- 6 replies

Hi, everyone! I've just installed Windows 2008 Enterprise in a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine. The server is set up as a PDC with it's own domain forrest, and has a DNS server. DNS resolves Ok, but I have 2 major issues. 1) If connecting to/from WinXP / Windows 2003 computer, the network share is visible, but I cannot copy files. The operation fails after a few seconds, with the "Network name cannot be found" (or "is not available") error. This works OK, if the client is Vista, so I presume it's a SMB 2.0 issue. Any hints on how to force the w2k8 box to use SMB 1.0? 2) From the w2k8 box, I cannot browse to http://www.microsoft.com, http://ww…

Windws Update scheduled install through GP
by Guest Jim A.- 2 replies

I have clients setup, through group policy, to download updates from my WSUS server and install them on Thursday at 6pm. My question is, do these computers need to remain connected to the network in order to install the updates? Because I have users who want to take their laptops home with them on Thursday night, but I am unsure as to whether the update will install if the computers are not on the network at 6pm.

Netlogon Share-access denied
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

One of our remote administrators uses a folder under the Netlogon (\\domaincontroller\netlogon\gposhare) for GPO batch files/logon scripts. Since I put in the new domain controllers, he gets 'access denied' when trying to edit the GPO batch files or post new ones. I am the domain admin, and it works fine. He is in the AD security group that has full control of this share. Any help is appreciated. steve

Win 2003 DC moving to new office - sanity check
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply
We have two main Offices - A and B. Office A is where our main DC is located (Windows 2003 Domain native mode, single forest, single site - GC, DHCP, WINS, DNS). Site B also has a DC (GC, WINS, DNS - No DHCP). The two sites are connected by IPSec VPN tunnel (30MB bandwidth). Office B is moving to a new location that will be getting a new address range so I will need to move the DC. It seems simple enough but I was hoping to get a sanity check on my planned process below: Day 1 - Run DCPromo on Office B DC to demote it to a member server. - Remove from Domain. - Rename (to follow naming convention for new office). - Shutdown server. - Allow ~16 hours f…

Question on event log errors
by Guest yepiknowiam- 12 replies

Not sure if someone can help me out with this, but wanted to ask. We have 2 servers (HP ML350 G3) running server 2003 with sp2. About 5 days apart, both started to fail and have issues at the same time, identical errors in the event log. The main system errors are event id 333 (An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in or write out or flush one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry) and event id 773 Server Agents. There also will be some warning at the same time in the application log related to prefdisk, which is weird because we don't track counters. From what I can t…

Hello all, I am setting up the NTP server function in the Windows 2003 PDC server. There are not much information about the value in W32Time registry, so hope to get some help here. The NTP server on Windows 2003 is for company wide usage purpose that will synchronize cisco network devices, unix servers and windows 2000/NT. Also the Windows 2003 will act as a NTP client to synchronize from the GRPS time source.(The Windows 2003 is also a Primary Domain Controller). /----- Network Devices (Cisco...) by Guest Andersen @ DK- 5 replies

Hi On my DC and Fileserver. All files have the read only attribute set. Nobody in the IT dept. did anything... or so they say. The file attribute has been inherite from above the root drives on the server. Ex. files in the root of drive D:\ has the file attribute Read Only marked and grayed out. So I can't unmark it. How can this happen? And how do I solve it?

I have installed Win2k3 Standard sp2 with terminal server. I want to restrict some users to use only a certain application and not all the installed apps and server resources. I have achieved this by simple adding the program executable name and his path on Terminl server Configuration > Connections > Rdp-Tcp > Environment > "Start this program at logon" When I start the rdp session, the user can see only the specified app, whit no desktop icons, app bar, right mouse click works only on the started application, but I have discovered that if I use the application "Open" option, I can browse the server/network file system and even delete files…

How do I set the local installations of Windows Desktop Search 4.0 to query the search index that has already been generated by the server instead of every machine having to create and maintain its own index for the hundreds of thousands of files on the shared drive?
