After initial boot of the server (factory install) the server was joined to the 2003 AD domain. Prior to rebooting I noticed that I was unable to make any configuration changes to the Firewall i.e. add exceptions. Upon rebooting the firewall service was not running and when I tried to restart it, received a message saying that one of it's dependant services (BFE) was not started. Starting the BFE resulted in an error 5: Access is denied. This occurred in both local and domain admin accounts. Moving the server to a seperate OU that denies all GPOs resulted in the same issues as did a gpupdate/reboot. Setting BFE to run as the domain admin resulted in …

Restricted Groups / Local Administrators
by Guest Russella- 1 reply

I've looked up and followed all the directions I could find on this topic, but I'm still having problems. I simply want to add a select group of users, primarily consultants, to the local administrators group - this allows them to fiddle with their software, but I want their server access to be restricted. I created a domain group, added them to it, then added this group to Restricted Groups and then added "Administrators" to "this group is a member of". I also tried it by adding users to the upper section. In the main, it worked, however it kept adding either the group or users that I had added to the Restricted Groups, into the domain administrators…

Windows Equivalent to /sbin/nologin

Hello, I have created AD accounts for some services running on multiple servers. I would like to secure those accounts by making it so that the service account could not be used to login to a system locally (i.e. at the console). In RedHat I can accomplish this by giving the account the /sbin/nologin shell as their default shell. How do I accomplish the same in Windows. Thank you, Bill

intelppm.sys

Have a HP server that when I start to performance test the load goes up far higher than I would expect based on previous server models. Using procexp (sysinternals) it is clear that the intelppm.sys driver is taking up to 20% of the 27^ busy CPU cycles in hardware interrupts. Been hunting and it seems that this is a processor speed/power reduction driver from Microsoft. How do I turn of it's functionality ? Thanks

TERMINAL SERVER

I am trying to install TS (through windows components) and when it asks me the license number if I put the server name ....it should automatically pick up the license number(what we used when we installed the server) or should I enter. I have the license numbers but I don't know which one was used when server was installed. Does it have to be the same? Also, we have about 50 users so should I pick per device or per user option?

Slow UNC or mapped copying even using only local resources?
by Guest Brenda- 0 replies

We have some kind of I/O issue on our Server 2003 machine. At first I thought it might be a network problem but, based on my experiment below which involves no network traffic at all, I think it's something else. Here's the experiment: 1. Create two folders on the desktop called 'A' and 'B' 2. Turn on sharing on folder 'B' 3. Place a 200 MB test file in folder 'A' 4. Copy file from 'A' to 'B' -- takes just a few seconds. 5. Click Start/Run and run \\server\b 6. Copy file from 'A' to \\server\b -- takes ten minutes! 7. Map drive Z to \\server\b 8. Copy file from 'A' to Z: -- also takes ten minutes! Why the slowness with mapped drive or UNC …

storport.sys problem after SP2
by Guest Jonathan Eshel- 9 replies

Hello, I have a problem with access to SAN drives after applying SP2 to Windows 2003 Enterprise. The HBA is an Emulex LP982 with a storport driver. After applying SP2 the server lost access to 3 out of the 4 disk drives assigned to it. Further tests revealed that LUNs translated to 7 or lower are still accessible, and only 8 and higher are no longer accessible. I am prettry sure the problem lies with the storport.sys Microsoft driver, as I tried to copy the older version (I know - not a good practice - only for troubleshooting purposes) of the file over the SP2 (and hotfix - see below) version and everything was back to normal. Moreover, I found there …

Hello All: Our forest level is Windows 2003 R2, schema version is 31. # 1). Installation requirement is for computers running Windows 2003 R2, is x64 allowed? #2). Quote: "Print Management can automatically search for and install network printers on the local subnet of your local print server" When I tried to execute the "Automatically Add Network Printers" command, it does not find any printers. I am assuming that's it's searching for printers on the local subnet, but all printers are located on other subnets/VLANs. Although, the Windows 2000 print server is located on the local subnet. How can I expand the search? #3). I configued…

WINS
by Guest Rich- 2 replies

not sure where to post this. I have a 2003 server that hosts exchange 2003 and the server is not listing in either net view or my network places both of which I believe use netbios. The server is listing in AD, thru DNS of course. I have tried using the lmhosts file but that was unsuccessful. This has become a critical issue since our BackupExec application uses netbios for it's restore process. The nic WINS settings on the server has two servers listed, netbios is enabled , and all related services are running. Also, search>computers on network from a client machine resolves the name of the server. any help with this would be much appreciated…
