Removing a drive from a software RAID 5 array. Win2K3 server
by Guest Calab- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Server that currently has five 500gig drives in a RAID 5 array. The array is healthy. Unfortunately, we need temporarily need a 500gig drive for an issue unrelated to this machine. Other than losing the protection of RAID 5, would there be any issues if we shut down the server, removed one drive, and brought the server back online? If we format the removed drive and use it elsewhere can we still be able to reinstall it into the server and let the array rebuild itself? From what I understand, this should all be fine, as long as we don't have another drive fail in the array while a drive is removed. I also know performance will s…

hello all, in eventwr sometimes we have Data: 0000: 0000007a microsoft says: The data section of the events may contain important information for troubleshooting. Change the view of the data section of the event from bytes to words. Investigate the status code in the data words of the events. The error code gives an additional hint for the reason why the event has been logged. At a command prompt, type Net Helpmsg ErrorNumber to obtain an explanation of that error. NET HELPMSG 0000007a cannot work How to interpret this?

Hello, We run a Windows 2003 domain. Our laptop users homefolders are made available off line through the use of Group Policy. The problem I have is this: User A leaves the company, before I give User A's laptop to a different user, I need to get the laptop to STOP trying to synchronize usr A's homefolder. I have tried the following: *Getting properties of User A in ADUAC and getting rid of their home folder path. *Deleting the User A's local profile on the laptop None of the above works, it still tries to sync to their folder when logging out of the laptop. If I am logged in as User A, and I right-click on their home-folder, I cannot un…

Deleting Printers
by Guest Derek Da Silva- 1 reply

Hello Everyone, I've used a script to map a network printer from an old print server called Server1 (ie. \\server1\printer) onto the XP workstation. I've recently created a new print server (Server2) and mapped the network printer (ie. \\server2\printer) onto the same XP workstation. When I attempt to remove the old print driver from Server1 using a script the command fails because Server1 is no longer active on the network. Is there a way to force the network printer connection to be deleted? I've tried the following commands: rundll32 printui.dll PrintUIEntry /dn /n\\server1\printer removeprinterconnection in a VBS script with the force delete o…

by Guest Dennis_S- 3 replies

I do a secondary backup each night to a USB Maxtor drive. These drives get switched out each day, using a different drive for each day of the week. This nightly backup job is scheduled to run at 2 AM each morning. Many times I'll come to work and find the job didn't run due to the follwing dialog box. Replace Data The requested media is not blank. It was created by another application. Do you want to continue? If I select Yes, the job starts. Is there a soft switch that can be added to the command line that automatically answers Yes if the dialog pops up? Thanks

Can anyone explain why some printers will spit out notification that a job was sucessfully printed and other will not? On my windows server 2003 print server, under printers & faxes>server properties>advanced tab, I have "Show informational notifications for network printers" selected It works for the most part except on a few older machines (say an IP based HP LJ 4000) Any thoughts or direction? Is it a printer I/O setting or something with Windows? Ian McCulloch Sydney, NS Canada

DC accept remote accounts authentication
by Guest Isaac Perez- 1 reply

Hi all, We have an accouting software that uses the local computer\username to authenticate to the server shared folders in this way: local-pc\local user No matter if you had already established a connection with the server or not. The clients are not in the domain, and due other reasons will not be added. The clients OS is windows xp and vista. My question is if I can create a new user account that reflects the remote computer and remote user in the DC, or make it accept the connections from them. Thanks, Isaac

printer folder won't open onn win2k server
by Guest Andrew Story- 4 replies

Hi, The printer folder on one of my windows2000 servers won't open (also a TS), it just hangs. Also the server cannot browse the network, again it just hangs. No issues until I ran windows updates earlier this month. I've removed the windows updates which were installed but still no joy. The office updates(office 2003) I installed can't be removed as they aren't in add/remove programs. If I reboot the server it works fine for just over an hour then starts with these issues again. Any ideas please guys? No errors in event viewer.

User With Modify Permission Able to Add Users to ACL?
by Guest Will- 3 replies
Is there a utility that will show which ACLs (chaining up from the current folder location) is the one that is responsible for each effective permission a user has on a file or folder? I have always understood that Modify permission in an ACL only gives the user the ability to change data, and not the ACL itself. Changing the ACL itself requires Full Control permission. I have a user with Modify access to a folder who is somehow able to add new users into the ACL. When you look at Effective permissions he does have the "Change Permission" permission. The thing we cannot figure out is where is this being inherited from. -- Will

by Guest RAZ- 1 reply
I have a Windows 2003 server running low on disk space for the C drive. I've already cleaned out my temp files and any other thing I can think of. Under the Windows directory I see a folder titled ServicePacksFiles which contain the I386 folder and a folder called ServicePackCache. Can I move this folder to another drive on the same server without casuing any problems to my server? This would free up over 700Mbs.

Opening documents on network drive crashes network.
by Guest Kris- 2 replies

Hi all, I also posted this in the Office thread however i don't know if it's an Office or server/network issue as yet. Replaced an old working ok network with all new equipment. Including a Server 2003 R2 DC. Unmanaged Switch. Linux gateway and 12 PC's. The only thing that still exists from old equipment is the cabling. Problem: When opening an Office 2007 document from a PC or notebook (from either in domain or standalone) from a network drive, it intermittently crashes PC's/server. Symptoms: If we're lucky it causes the PC to stop responding for 5 minutes before closing the Office application. When possible a restart will then render the PC us…
