Event Log Descriptions
by Guest TDM- 2 replies

Hello all, First, my apology if this is the wrong NG for this question. I am trying to find detailed descriptions for the EventID's used by the operating system when writing events to the event log. I have found information related to "security" at MSDN, but what Here is an example of what I am asking for http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299475 but for ALL event ID's explained. Is there such a reference ? I am having a bit of trouble finding one. At the very least, I would like to get the event id's for failed file and folder deletes due to lack of permissions. Thanks in advance. TDM

close an open file by name
by Guest drdraxx- 3 replies
I'm looking for a way to be able to close an open file by name on a Windows 2003 Server Standard automatically. In a few google searches, I found people listing a command to close all open files: for /f "skip=4 tokens=1" %a in ('net files') do net files %a /close and one to close individual files: net file ID /close The problem with that is knowing the file ID. To test I tried to open a file on the server, check the ID, close the file and open it again but the ID changed. Does anyone know of a method I could use to close one specific file by name by say a scheduled task or .bat file or anything like that?

Advice on upgrading domain server and exchange server
by Guest David M. Wolff- 0 replies
I was just looking for some general advice and possible links to white papers that might help me. My network (12 server and 300 workstations) is currently running a windows 2000 domain controller and exchange 2000. I would like to upgrade to a Windows 2003 (64 bit) domain controller and Exchange 2007. Would it be better to upgrade my domain controller before my exchange server? Are there any concerns about running adprep on my windows 2000 domain server so I can add a windows 2003 backup domain controller? Once I have a windows 2003 backup domain controller can I just promote to be my primary domain controller? Are their any problems I should anticipate? …

Open Files and Shadow Copies for Shared Folders
by Guest TREE65- 2 replies
I just enabled Shadow Copies for Shared Folders on our new Windows Server 2003 file server. I have discovered that open files do not get shadow copied. Furthermore, all previous shadow copies of the open files are removed. When I look at the previous versions client, there are no previous versions listed; however prior to the shadow copy that occurred while the file was open there had been previous versions listed in the previous versions client. Please note that the shadow copy occurs when the file is open and then at some point later I save and close the file, and then I check the previous versions. Is this by design? I can live with shadow copie…

Activate Windows when remote connect
by Guest JJM0926- 3 replies
Hope someone could help shed some light. When I try to remote desktop connect to our Windows 2003 server I get an activate windows message. I can log in to the server as Administrator, but can't get any further. It prompts for activation. It is already activated and we've had this server for years. What's really odd is I can go on the server itself and on the console and I don't get any activation message. We haven't done any upgrades or any recent updates. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

.... usually requiring server reboots. Windows 2003 Server Enterprise R2. SP 2. Single server environment with Exchange as well. Started Monday night. Clients start loosing access to shares and then Exchange becomes unreachable as well. Server remains pingable. The only thing I keep seeing is: Event 1030 "Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this." and Event 1058 Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={6AC1786C-016F-11D2-945F-00C04fB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=<doman redacted>,DC=local. Migration to Exchange 2007 Oddities
by Guest Kelly [MCSE]- 1 reply

A week or so ago we started running low on storage for our current Exchange 2003 setup. Instead of slapping on more storage, we decided to migrate to Exchange 2007 on a shiny new server with loads of storage since we planned on doing it later this year anyways. The installation of Exchange 2007 and the new server into our current environment (having mail flow from outside to new server to old server and vice versa worked great) and even the migration of mailboxes to the new server worked perfect without any issues. Our BES also switched over fine once we updated the MAPI profile for the BES Admin account. There's just a couple of random issues that aren't cau…

Printer Woes
by Guest maitakeboy- 0 replies

Two issues: 1- On one of my print servers, I have created printers within a domain user account which is a member of the local administrators group. When I try to go and configure those printers, most everything is greyed out, specifically the Advanced tab with the Printing defaults. 2- My printers folder on this machine is a little funky generally. When I log off as one user and log on as another, I can't get the printers folder to enumerate the printers. It says 7 printers at the bottom of the window, but hands with the hourglass indefinitely. A reboot solves this, but I still can't log off and log on and see printers in each user profile. Any ideas…

Selection list recommendation for Backup Exec 9
by Guest Coleman- 1 reply

I'm using Backup Exec 9 to run tape backup for 2 servers, one file server and one Exchange server. I want to grab the system state from both, the files, and the Exchange DB. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what should be exempted from the backup job? Like directories that don't need backing up?
