Setup 2nd Site to replicate AD & DNS
by Guest circulent- 3 replies

Hi Folks, We recently added a 2nd site linked via dedicated T-1 (point to point). While the first site has two DC/DNS servers, we'd like to add one more to the new site, and have AD & DNS replicated over. What's the best process to do so? Should I just add the new server to the domain first? Then promote it to a DC? Thanks

event id 202

Event ID 202 Discussion: While checking Application Log on one of my W2003 servers, I came across this error - License Service Event ID: 202. I read the MS support pages, etc. Basically I found that under AdminTool/Licensing/Clients, there are many "clients" that ARE NOT current employees. Under PROPERTIES it shows the last log-on date. Some are over 5.5 years old. THE QUESTIONS: Should I delete these people or just revoke the license? and what is the difference between revoking and deleting? MY THOUGHTS: Delete these people and keep the data base clean all the time to only reflect current employees. These people are not in the current active direc…

Directory Permissions - What gives? 1 2
by Guest Andrew- 27 replies

I shared a directory with one of our Windows 2003 servers and gave a user Full Control accesss to that directory. However, from his computer where he is logged on, he can't copy and paste anything to that directory. If he remote desktop's into the server and logs on as himself, he can browse to another network share and pull the file over without any problems. I never had this problem in Windows 2000. How do I configure a directory on a Windows 2003 server so that people can "push" files to that folder without logging onto the server locally and "pulling" the files over?

NTFS Security Group fails to provide correct access to folders
by Guest stu_derek- 3 replies

I have created a Global Windows security group that contains 10 users and applied the group to a folder on a file server to give the users in this group Read/Mod access to the data contained. However, 8 out of the 10 users have NO access to the folder when I check the 'Effective permissions' (the other two are fine). If I add the users to the folder explicitly then access is ok. It seems that Windows is not succesfully enumerating the group memberships and granting the required level of access to all users. The users are added to a Global group and are not specifically denied access to the folder elsewhere. Has ayone else encountered a situation like t…

adding a nickname

Currently we are using thunderbird email clients. Was wondering if there is a way to add a nickname to the schema that would appear under user manager. An example would be Robert L Smith and a person could just type in RLS to send an email to that person. Linux email server.

The server was unable to find a free connection
by Guest inenewbl- 0 replies

Hi all. My windows 2000 file server has serveral warnings "The server was unable to find a free connection n times in the last 60 seconds". I have tried setting my minfreeconnections and maxfreeconnections to 256 and 4096 respectively but still face the same problem. Base on this website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830901 i can set my minfreeconnections and maxfreeconnections to 512 and 16384 respectively, however my srvsvc.dll file is an earlier version than the 5.0.2195.6930 required. Hence how can i update the version of srvsvc.dll file in my win2k server? Can i copy from win2003 server and overwrite it? Thks in advance.

Console Logon Issues with WSS 2003 R2
by Guest Brian Spolarich- 2 replies

I have an HP Ai0600 server (ML370 really) running WSS 2003 R2, up to date. I've had a problem since I got this box that occurs somewhat randomly that HP hasn't been able to fix. I manage the box remotely via RDP console session (as I do for all of my sessions). After a while I will be unable to logon remotely -- the RDP client connects and drops. Sometimes I'm able to fix this by logging on at the physical console and logging off the session there. Sometimes I can connect via VNC as well to do this. Sometimes however (like today) when I attempt to logon at the physical console I see this error: Logon Connect Failed - "Error connecting to existing session…

Large system cache settings
by Guest Kpark- 1 reply

I have been looking to optimize settings on some of our Windows servers. These servers all have 4GB of RAM installed (about 3.3GB available because we are not using /PAE). Since we seem to have plenty of RAM, I want to maximize the virtual address space available to be used by the cache manager. I marked the option to adjust memory for best performance of the system cache, rebooted, and verified the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache is now set to 1. When I try to verify the cache virtual size in Windbg, it seems to still be set to 512MB rather than the 960MB maximum siz…

Can file and print services currently running on Windows2000Server SP4 be directly upgraded to Storage Server 2003 R2? If so, where are the upgrade instructions? What issues could I expect to crop up and deal with in advance?

W2k3 R2 SP2 and RDP
by Guest Schmeg- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 SP2. We upgraded with SP2 a few weeks ago. Prior to that, the server had been in place fully functional for several months. After applying SP2 we found that remote desktop to the server worked sporadically. Sometimes it would connect just fine. Other times when the client hit connect, it would appear to attempt to connect (very, very fast) and then just leave the client at the RDP connection screen again. We've also tried with the new RDP software and no difference. Flashes "attemting to connect" and then to "not connect" as fast as the eye can see. Multiple clients, same results, no errors or event anywhere…
