PDC Emulator FSMO role transition
by Guest Alan- 0 replies
Due to network upgrade our DC with the PDC emulator role will need to transition the FSMO role to a DC in another site. My question is this, will this: 1) Break the 2 way trusts established for legacy domains? 2) Can WINS be simply pointed to the other site for name resolution? 3) Are there any other caveats that I am overlooking. Any input is greatly appreciated. Alan

Hi All Here is the problem I work at a School with 700 students and 80 staff. We have numerous 2003 servers, but the main server "fileserver" holds all of the users main data. On this server we have 3 folders, 1: Students 2: Staff 3: Office on a 500 gig volume. In students are all the students home dirs, In Staff, the same, office is for admin docs etc. Active Directory is set up similar, Students OU's, Staff OU's etc. With sub directories as needed. Could you please advise how to set up Disk quotas on students only (say 500meg) that will not effect Staff or Office users on the same volume. Will setting a Group policy on th…

Redirect server share?
by Guest mwf- 2 replies

Is it possible to redirect a share from server A to server B? Assume that server A is not going away. We're trying to consolidate a particular share from multiple regional servers down to one corporate share. The regional servers are not going away. We need to be able to automatically redirect calls to the old UNC path to the new location in order to maintain links embedded in some of the documents. Any ideas?

Include printer drivers for Vista into a Windows 2003 Printserver
by Guest Johannes Heckenstaller- 0 replies

Hello, how can I include print drivers written for Vista into a Windows 2003 Printserver in order to publish/distribute the printer in the AD ? The Windows 2003 server has at printer properties (Tab "Sharing") the Button "Additional Drivers" only the option to include/install drivers for Windows 200x, XP, NT4, 9x and the Itanium-platform plus Intel x64 -but no entry/option for Vista. What can I do in order to include them? I can imagine, that I´m not the only one with this problem - there must be thousands of companies around the world with this problem. Is Microsoft not able to update/patch the Windows 2003 Server (printservice) in order to serv…

Hello, I am trying to write a test hardware provider. I changed the vshadow tool to call the hardware provider using its GUID. My snapshot completes fine and the xml file also gets generated for transportable snapshot. The setup is something like this. Exchange SG1 logs on F: and mailbox of G:. I give command "vshadow.exe -t=test.xml F: G:". When the snapshot is fired, I see following event logs at the end, indicating me that the backup was complete. ******************* Event Type: Information Event Source: MSExchangeIS Event Category: Exchange VSS Writer Event ID: 9612 Date: 7/16/2007 Time: 9:28:49 PM User: N/A Computer: BRCDIND-R3-105 Description:…

Is there a need for this?
by Guest Brandon Arnold- 12 replies

Hi, I'm an entry level "admin" for a network in my office. Previously I was a systems admin for a small business and maintained a mixed Mac/XP setup with a server 2003 machine setup for file sharing and an internal testing site for the web devs. Now I'm thrown into an office with a previously configured SBS and I've noticed on all my workstations, all XP Pro, they're set to connect to the server which is setup for AD. As best I can tell, it's completely useless. Everyone logs onto the server but works locally. The only reason I can see that the server is even in the building is to host files that everyone accesses and to run an SQL database for an app we ha…

We just moved all the operations from a File/print server to a new one and everything is working except for a shared excel spreadsheet. the users are reporting that they get "Delayed write failed" when trying to write to this shared file. I have checked all the settings and permissions and they are able to use other files fine. I have found some notes on the web about auto neg between the nics and the switch port. the old server were HP NICS and now they are Built in Broadcom cards teamed together. Any thoughts? thanks

Basic WINS configuration question.
by Guest Purtech- 0 replies

I have two Server Standard 2003 R2 SP1 Domain Controllers. Lets say one Domain is xyz.com and the other lab.xyz.com. Full names: adminserver.xys.com and labserver.lab.xyz.com. A trust relationship flows from adminserver to labserver, but not the other way around. WINS was initially put on adminserver, then I started having errors that made me believe I needed WINS on labserver. Now both have WINS. DHCP exists only on adminserver and handles both domains. So...in the DHCP scopes do I make adminserver the Primary WINS and labserver Secondary? Does it matter? All the lab computer will wind up using adminserver as Primary WINS. Or should I install …

Deny logon privilege to every user except one on a domain computer

Hi I have a strange request from our office assistant. She works on a domain computer (Windows XP) called NORTON01. The domain is managed by a Windows 2003 server. She thinks someone is hacking into her files. So she wants to prevent everyone (except administrator of course) from logging into NORTON01. I searched for "restrict windows login" and found several pages that basically describe how to assign computers in the ADU. I can't use that feature because all the users except the office assistant float. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks
