SP2 install wanted to replace RAID driver, I said no, now BSOD 7B

The 2003 server has an old Adaptec 2010S RAID card with the most recent Adaptec driver (dpti2o.sys) installed in it from July 2003. The driver is WHQL. It's been running just fine the past 5 years, and I wanted to install SP2 on it to get it up to date. During SP2 setup it said something to the effect that it had a newer mass storage driver for the RAID card that it wanted to use. I don't remember the exact text of the message, thus I haven't been able to google for it again, but at the time I was able to search for it and the recommendations I got generally said not to let it change the driver. I said to keep the current driver and SP2 finished and whe…

Question on event log errors
by Guest yepiknowiam- 12 replies

Not sure if someone can help me out with this, but wanted to ask. We have 2 servers (HP ML350 G3) running server 2003 with sp2. About 5 days apart, both started to fail and have issues at the same time, identical errors in the event log. The main system errors are event id 333 (An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in or write out or flush one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry) and event id 773 Server Agents. There also will be some warning at the same time in the application log related to prefdisk, which is weird because we don't track counters. From what I can t…

Disconnected network shares
by Guest Jeff- 12 replies

I have approximately 100 users on our network that consists of 7 servers. There are approximately 1 dozen users that get disconnected from one server consistantly. That is a W2K server with network shares. I am pretty sure it is a DNS issue because I can ipconfig /release /renew and that works (most of the time). Sometimes I do not even have to do that, just click on the shared drive and it comes back. Thanks, Jeff

Copy Large Files
by Guest ctowndu33- 12 replies

Brand new install of W2K3 on a 2 gb RAM, 3.2 Ghz processor. When we try and copy over large files (2Gb plus) the server does fine for about half the file and then the System process immediately goes from 15-20 percent to a solid 99. The server becomes ridiculously slow and the file copy goes from about 2 minutes to 200+. I'm out of ideas other than potentially hardware. I've replaced cables, tried different NIC, different ports on the switch. Is there something in the OS that could cause this thrashing? Thanks in advance!

Disk errors on OS drive: can't mirror or backup
by Guest Neil- 12 replies

I have an IDE drive that hosts the OS (Windows 2000 Server) on my Exchange 2000 server. I have another IDE drive installed, and I attempted to mirror this drive using Win2k's software RAID but halfway through the process it aborted, stating that the original drive had errors. The Exchange DBs are on a seperate RAID-5 array and I have backups of my data so I'm not so worried about that, but I cannot mirror this drive or get a good backup of it. When I look at the drive in Disk Management it has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point next to the drive and it says Errors. I believe I may have some physically bad sectors. What would be the bes…

Why do I have to leave & rejoin the domain to make logins work?
by Guest JoshGfromPortland- 12 replies

Every so often I get the following message when trying to login with my virtual machines: "Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Pleast try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance." To fix the problem I have to leave and rejoin the domain. But I don't know what is causing this to break. I am running Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Windows XP Pro SP3 on the virtual machines. I'm fairly certain there are no other virtual machines or physical machines with the same computer names.…

Dear Community, I have search high and low for any anwswer to my Windows Server 2003 SP2 upgrade, but I have not been able to find an answer. I am trying to upgrade my server from RTM to SP2. Each time I try to apply SP2 it fails with 'Access is Denied'. Then the system rolls back its changes. I have reviewed the svcpack.log file. Here is a copy of the tail end of the file. 1030.390: Starting process: C:\WINNT\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINNT\system32\sysdm.cpl,EnableExecuteProtectionSupport 1031.937: Return Code = 0 1031.937: Num Ticks for Copying files : 417797 1031.937: Starting process: C:\WINNT\uddisp.exe install "c:\winnt\softwaredistri…

Windows 2003 R2 - Missing Disk Space on System drive
by Guest zinger-uk- 12 replies

Hi, We have a problem on one of our Domain Controllers which is running windows 2003 R2 server (SP2) The server almost ran out of disk space I have managed to free up enough disk space to give us some breathing room, but the MAJOR problem we have is Windows Explorer is reporting that there is only 602MB free on the 8GB System © drive. But if you run chkdsk it reports that 4314608 KB is available (i.e. 4GB of space) Does anyone know how we can get the windows to recognise that we have 4GB of free space and not 602MB If we do a dir /a /s it reports that 4,029,885,992 bytes are used and that 631,287,808 bytes are free The drive is formatted w…

Hi, For SQL Server, a fellow has suggested to use File Allocation Unit of size 64KB and the sector size should be 4KB. I am able to format a new hard disk and assign a file allocation unit size of 64KB. On the other hand, is there any way for us to change the sector size and what is the default value for a Windows 2003 Server ? Thanks Peter

why have a server?...advice needed
by Guest Greg Peterson- 12 replies

Greetings. I will be starting a small (20-30 person) business soon, and will likely be a key decision maker for the IT equipment. In the future company, I am wondering why we need to have a server, when a relatively cheap NAS will likely do the trick for all of our filesharing needs (mostly sharing engineering drawings and other large files). For e-mail, we'll probably go with Gmail and eliminate the need for any mail server (if people want to set up POP3 accounts on their PCs, that's their choice). Our website will receive minimal traffic, so it will be hosted elsewhere. If we use something like Peachtree accounting (which is for 5 or so users), …

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem.

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem. I also am having this problem when trying to copy files using the Windows Explorer. Both systems (target and source) are Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. If I try and "push" files at the target, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." If I try and "pull" the files from the source, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Not enough server storage space is available to process this command." I've searched the knowledgebase for both error messages and found solutions to either ancient NT products, some 20…

Long reboot
by Guest r. wales- 11 replies

I have a win 2k3 server that takes a long time to reboot. It is fully patched. This is not new or recent behavior and as far as I can tell has always been like this. As the server boots up, it spends around 11 minutes 'Preparing Network Connections'. This is a lot more time than our other servers spend during this same phase. Any thoughts or ideas? It's more of a nuisance than a problem, I just want to see if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it or if I will just have to live with it. Thanks.

admin tool roundup?
by Guest Erik Funkenbusch- 11 replies

Hey there, I'm looking for some recommendations for Windows administration tools, particularly those that integrate Remote Desktop management as well as other tools. I've looked at Smartcode, iShadow and Pointdev. I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations. All of these tools have features the others don't, and i'm looking for something a little more comprehensive. My needs are: I have to manage dozens of servers via remote desktop, and i'd like a single, integrated tool to do this. It should do the following: Manage the RDP connections, including allowing configuration of RDP encryption, and preferrably SSL encryption as well. …

HELP!! Cannot Find Domain When Logging on to Windows Server 2003 R
by Guest binarydaddy- 11 replies

Morning, I have a client who we took over 3 months ago that was having issues with their old server with WinSvr2003 and Exchange 2003. Previous consultant setup their Local Disk as a 9GB partition and it became full soon after we took over the account. We recommended resizing the partition with a server grade partitioning app. However, they decided rather than doing that or reformatting and restoring backups, they would buy new server. Did not have discs for Windows Server 2003...so they bought 2003 R2 (not for profit with limited purchasing capabilities through TechSoup). We have not done many server replacements in the past, but all have been w…

Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

I have a Windows 2003 R2 server running SQL Server 2000. This appears in the event log every 15 minutes: EventID: 7023 The Network Connections service terminated with the following error: Invalid access to memory location. Sometimes it's: EventID: 7023 The Cryptographic Services service terminated with the following error: Invalid access to memory location. The other odd thing is I can't get to Windows Update with this machine. I can get to other websites but WU takes foverer to load, then asks me if I want to update the softare. I say yes and it just sits there. In an article somewhere it suggested registering a list of DLL's related to Window…

Memory issue
by Guest Frank- 11 replies

We have a Windows Server 2003 that has 4 Gb of memory installed. Windows recognizes the memory if I loop at the properties of the server. However the taskmanager shows only 200 MB free memory and all running programs use 200-300MB of memory. However virtual memory use is rather high. This is a SQL server and SQL server uses 77 MB of physical memory and 1.7 GB of virtual memory. Boot.ini looks like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Standard" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect /PAE /3GB Only change in the last half yea…
