A server at a customers site slows down a couple of times a day. (Windows 2003 sp2 -sp2 installed hoping to resolve the problem, so the problem already exists when only sp1 was installed-) in the beginning of this problem I noticed the following error message in the servers logfile: _______________________ Windows saved user DOMEIN\user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the L…

BACKGROUND: Environment: W2k3 running AD not running Certificate Authority (CA) Clients: Windows XP The certificates I have on my W2k3 which is running AD expired on 7/6/2007. It was bought to my attention when our users were unable to encrypt and decrypt their files. Therefore, when I logon as a domain admin or user I cannot encrypt on any computer on the domain. The error I get is: "Recovery policy configured for this system contains invalid recovery certificate" I go to the W2k3 server and go to Certmgr.msc. Attempt to request for the certificate from Certificates>Personal folder but it indicates I need a Certificate Authority. When I…

Disk requirements of next version of Windows Server
by Guest Tom Del Rosso- 10 replies

Any idea how big the next version of Windows Server is going to be, so newly installed boot partitions can accommodate an upgrade later? (I'm thinking about a partition without a pagefile.) -- Reply in group, but if emailing add another zero, and remove the last word.

I am trying to work around a temporary situation on a Windows 2003 server where group policy was misapplied. NETWORK SERVICE and LOCAL SERVICE accounts no longer have impersonate privileges and start service privilege so I need to temporarily start up services in security context of SYSTEM, get group policy working, then patch up services to run in their original contexts. I have done this before we success, but this time I'm thrown for a loop by DNS Client service, which is not able to start in NETWORK SERVICE security context. In the registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache there are two values: I…

Problem with services not starting on reboot
by Guest Burleyman- 5 replies

I have a few services COM+ System Application,Task Scheduler, and Distributed Transaction Coordinator, that I have set to Automatic but when the server gets reboot they reset themselves to disabled. I can then manually change them back to automatic and then start them and the work fine but then when I reboot the server back they go. Nothing in the event logs that point to anything to check. Has anyone had this happen? Where should I begin? This seems to have started after upgrading Sharepoint to SP2. -- Thank you, Burleyman Have a great day!

tcpsvcs.exe taking all my memory!
by Guest Sandy Wood- 2 replies

I've noticed lately that my Windows 2003 R2 DHCP server is showing evidence of tcpsvcs.exe sucking up too much memory. This morning I started getting MOM alerts that there was excess memory consumption from tcpsvcs so I killed the process (it was using 650 meg of ram) and it started again at about 10 meg. It's currently at about 25 meg. MOM is detecting that it's using too much ram and sending me alerts. Does anyone have any idea on this one? I've seen other posts in this forum with similar issues but no resolutions. -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

Sharepoint

About 4 days ago I noticed an error message in my Application Event log from Sharepoint Services that there was not enough free space available and the tracing service has temporarily stopped outputting trace messages to the log file. I found the log files at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Logs. At this location there are lots of logs 30 - 40 meg. each. They all contain the same message, '07/10/2007 08:18:14.98 OWSTIMER.EXE (0x0AD4) 0x0AFC Windows SharePoint Services Timer 5uuf Monitorable The previous instance of the timer job 'Config Refresh', id '{CBECAB1F-4C74…

Seemingly Random Frequent Reboots
by Guest Jason- 0 replies
I have two servers that just began rebooting on a seemingly random basis (for about 2 days now). Sometimes it will happen within 15 mins of being booted up, other times it might be 6 hours between reboots. It does so without any warning, and no error messages. The only thing remaining afterwards that indicates the event is the presence of the standard event in the event log indicating an unscheduled shutdown. For example: (Source: EventLog, ID: 6008) "The previous system shutdown at 4:11:43 PM on 7/10/2007 was unexpected." I looked around in event viewer for different errors happening just before that time that might be related, but there are none...…

SFN 5.03 File Migration Utility Reports Forest Unavailable
by Guest Peter- 3 replies

I am attempting to perform a migration from a Novell Netware 6 environment to Windows Server 2003 R2 using Microsoft Services For Netware(SFN) 5.03 SP2. The Windows servers have the latest patches and SFN is running on a domain controller with Novell Client for Windows 4.91 SP3. The Microsoft Directory Synchronization Service(MSDSS) installed properly, migrated Netware accounts to Active Directory(AD) OUs and continues one-way synchronization without issue. When attempting to use the File Migration Utility(FMU) to transfer files and permissions from Netware to a Windows 2003 server, the FMU indicates that the forest is "unavailable" in the Active Directory t…
