can't restart remote server 2003 with shutdown -i?
by Guest geekyguy- 2 replies

Hi All: I have 2003 domain with a number of member servers. One of the servers is unresponsive...I can ping it from other computers on the subnet, but can't access it with remote desktop. I tried to restart it using the interactive shutdown dialog...when I "browsed" for computers it came up in AD (although I realize that may not mean anything). However, the "remote shutdown dialog" just hang's when I select "restart", no matter what computer I try from, including the PDC when I'm logged in as the domain admin. Is it not possible to restart the server this way? Or is there anything else I can try?

Other solutions for "applying personal settings" hang?
by Guest Wowbagger- 1 reply

The 2003 server R2 machine has been sitting at the "applying personal settings" message for over an hour. Services are being provided so the machine isn't completely dead, but I can't do anything at the terminal. As far as I can tell there are two known problems that cause this: 1. A problem with the APC PowerChute software (doesn't apply in this case) from a couple years back 2. DNS configuration that points to another nameserver. This also is not the case as the machine is configured to point to itself and only itself for DNS services, and the forward zones are configured correctly. Are there any other possible solutions to this very annoying pro…

I'm fairly confident the Maxtor external HDD has been used previously on the W2003 server - but not 100%. Device manager knows it's there but Explorer does not see it. The file system is NTFS (I put it on another PC - XP pro). -- Regards Tom

kb 944704 hotfix didn't update all of the files
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Due to a USB problem (the machine has suddenly started to refuse to recognize the keyboard/mouse plugged into an iogear KVM for some reason) I downloaded the hotfix for kb944704 but not all of the files updated correctly. According to the documentation, the hotfix should update the following to file version 5.2.3790.4189 Usbehci.sys Usbohci.sys Usbport.sys Usbuhci.sys but usbohci.sys did not update along with the others. The hotfix comes only in the form of an .exe file - are the individual files available anywhere to do a manual update?

2003 R2 and FSRM Directory-based quotas
by Guest Adam McKee- 2 replies

A few days ago I implemented the FSRM quota system because I prefer the directory-path-based quota system to the file ownership-based system. Since then, and on a few occasions, I've received alerts about quota violations for directory paths that have NOT reached their quota. Case in point being a path (let's call it D:\User) that had a 500MB quota. With 450MB in that directory, new files were unable to be written because of the quota. I deleted the quota entry in FSRM and recreated it, and now the quota works as expected again. Any idea what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Web Access Home Directory
by Guest athos_01- 0 replies

I am a tech coordinator for a rural K-12 school district. I would like to provide a way for students to access their home directories through a web interface. As a school, my budget is not very big. Anybody know of any open source or inexpensive ways to do this. I have played with FTP and User Isolation on 2003, but I don't like the way that their passwords are visible in the addressbar and are sent via plain text. I would think this is something that would be on sourceforge but I have been unable to find anything easy. Thanks for any help.

I have a small Server 2000 AD network that I'm considering upgrading. It has five CALs and five Terminal Server CALs. The Terminal Server CALs are actually downgrades from Server 2003, so they shouldn't be a problem. I have a copy of Server 2003 Standard, but no CALs. Is there an upgrade path for the Server 2000 CALs to Server 2003, or do I have to buy a whole new 5 pack of CALs? -- Aaron Clausen mightymartianca@gmail.com

Hi, Need some help here, for a basic question I just can't seem to master. I have 3 external ip addresses assigned to me by my ISP, say ranges 80.369.20.20 thru .22. I also have 3 servers set up correctly in my LAN, ranges 192.168.2.2 thru .4 What I want to do, is make it so someone can type in http://80.369.20.20 in their browser and it ends up connecting to the server I have in my internal LAN with IP address 192.168.2.2 I'm new to networking, and can't find anything that explains how to map the external IP address to a specifi server in my LAN. I don't see anything in the Firewall that does this, nor in the switch I have. How is this accomplished? T…

Any bad experiences switching licenses from server mode to user mo
by Guest Lynnex1138- 1 reply
We have seven servers on our domain, 6 are domain controllers. We are about to switch our licensing from per server to per user mode. Right now the numbers reflected in the license manager do not make sense and I've been told by others the license manager is unreliable anyway and should be ignored. Has anyone made this switch and had a bad experience? I was going to pick one server that would have the least impact on the network if something went wrong yet still provide a good test. Any feedback on unexpected/bad results happening with the switch from per server to per user is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi All… I am running a production Windows Server 2003 SP2 on C:\ with Exchange 2003 installed on E:\ when the E:\ drive was full in the morning and has 0 bytes free space! I tried to free and delete or move some files but they appear shortly after I do that again and no changes in the size appeared. After restarting the sever, I start to get this error: E:\ is not accessible. There is not enough space on the disk. Also the Exchange services and some other service couldn’t start. This drive E:\ has all the Information Store and the files!!! Any idea how to resolve this? Thanks -- Aws awsok@yahoo.com

Hi everybody, I've some computers in my LAN (100 Mbit). I need to connect two of them with something faster 'cause they need to transfer big files (W2k8 and Windows Vista Business). As firewire direct connection is not supported by Vista, I don't know about any solution to this... Any suggestion? Please consider that both PCs need to be still available on the LAN, simulteously. Thx in advance! Sid.

Problem with Hyper-V, NCQ SATA drives; Event ID 129 from nvstor64 saying "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued". This post is related to the one on 5 Jun 2008, but I think I asked the wrong question in that one! The operating system is Windows Server 2008 RTM with the RTM version of the Hyper-V role installed (Windows6.0-KB950050-x64.msu). The computer is a custom built with an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, which has the NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI chipset. This computer has three SATA drives - two ST3320620AS and one ST3500320AS. The ST3500320AS has two partitions, one of which is the Windows "System" and "Boot" partition (hosts the operating system)…
