Freeing Up HD Space on Windows 2003 DNS Server
by Guest Paul P-L- 1 reply

I need to free up some room on the c: drive of a Windows 2003 SP1 DNS Server so I can add some Windows Updates. (It was built a few years ago w/a 4GB c: partition and I have 311MB left. I do have 9GB free on the e: partition.) I noticed that the c:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder is taking up 1.2GB. Can I delete this folder safely, or move it to the e: partition w/o breaking anything? How about the c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles folder. Can I move, delete, or empty that one? Thanks.

I am researching the possible issues with upgrading Windows 2003 Std to 2003 Enterprise. Just curious if it is a straight upgrade or merits reinstalling all non-Microsoft software? Anything to watch out for?

2008 server install with only AD setup is over 11G
by Guest Paul Ableman- 3 replies

I've just received a 2008 server for a client that already has 12G of OS data on it. I was hoping to create an emergency backup onto a DVD after I get things configured; however, I'm not willing to span 3 DVDs. What can I remove to get the install down under 4G? I'm very surprised/disappointed that with little/nothing configured or any data moved over to the server that I've got nearly a 12G footprint JUST for the OS. Any suggestions? Thanks,

RE: AD User Profile changes intermittently Please check if your AD environment has many Domain controllers. All the domain controllers need to be in Sync. To find out which domain controller is the PC connecting to, go to the command prompt and type Set to find out the logon server information. Hope this helps!!! SAFEBOOT registry subkeys missing, can't boot into safe mode
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 4 replies

Hi: Windows 2003 Server, can't boot into safe mode. Upon further inspection, subkeys for SAFEBOOT are missing from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot registry. That is, not even Minimal nor Network keys are present. ContolSet002, ..., ControlSet004 are either missing SafeBoot key entirely or the subkeys as above. 1. What is the procedure to restore these keys, short of a reinstall of the opsys? 2. Any idea how this could have happened? If a virus/trojan, I didn't seen anything suspicious under run/runonce (cursory inspection). Thank you in advance for your help. -- Roy Zider Used ERD Commander 2005 for boot.

We would like to have these computers join our domain in the main office and instead get Ip addresses from the DHCP server in the main office. How do I get a Linksys router to do that? Thanks

Low Disk Space on Server 2003 SP2
by Guest master_yoda- 3 replies

Existing server at the company I am at was set up with a 12GB C partition and is down to less than 4GB. I have tried cleaning up as much as possible, but I am barely above 4.5GB now. Much of the disk space being used is in the service pack and update un-installation folders located under the Windows folder, all the names are preceded with a $. Are these safe to just highlight and shift-delete, or is there a safe way of removing or archiving them. I have plenty of disk space in other partitions. On the same note, are there any reliable utilities out there for safely re-sizing a running C partition on a 2003 server? Thanks!

How can I restore from a secured backup?
by Guest BackupDaemon- 2 replies
Is there a good method or piece of software that will allow me to restore secured backups (ntbackup.exe ... /r:yes) in a disaster situation (total loss of domain server and domain-joined computers)? The obvious fix would be to make unsecured backups. However, we would like our offsite backups to be at least somewhat protected. Maybe there is a better way to make these backups secure? I'm hesitant to use encryption, my worry is that if part of the encrypted backup is damaged, I lose all the data. Using encryption also increases the duration of the backup job (which is an important factor when contending with >100 GB of data). We're running Server…

Hi everybody. Does anybody know a good webpage or book explaining how to write scripts? I need a script which will compare %clientname% and %username% with a ini file, to decide if the user is allowed to logon to a terminalserver. I want to achieve that specific users can logon only from specific clients to the terminalserver. The specification would be in the ini which will be edited by the customer himself. hello, I'm about to roll out a couple of windows 2003 sql server 2005 for a financial platform (banking industry). the servers use local hard disks to boot (drive c) but are attached to a san for holding data (drive d). now I noticed that the local sas disks are 15k rpm fast, while the disk hosted on the san only is 5k fast. I don't have that much know how with san solutions, but is it normal that san disks are so slow (our san is from hitachi) ? would it be better to use local disks for our sql server (the databases are used very heavily) ? does rpm makes a big difference in terms of sql server operations ? thanks in advance for any help. regards, z…
