Hello, since we have installed SQL2005 Server and the SP2 for SQL2005 on one of our monitoring servers (2003 sp2), we see a very strange message when starting Users and Computers. "Adding snap-in to console..." and a progressbar running through for a few times. afte about 2 minutes or so, the dsa loads as usual and works fine. This happens everytime we start dsa.msc. Anyone has any idea about this? Regards Stefan

NTFS Permissions - effective
by Guest JohnB- 8 replies

Isn't the "effective" permissions the most restrictive combination, calculated from group or individual permissions that apply? I just checked the effective permissions (setup by someone else) of a folder that contains confidential information, and everything is checked off except Change, Full Control and Take Ownership. I did this with random users that should only have Read permissions. There are 2 groups assigned permissions on this folder; one group - Users - is granted everything but Full Control, the other is group - Authenticated Users - is granted Read & Execute, List and Read. And I would have thought those combined permissions would have…

Retire or Upgrade and Retire?
by Guest RandyH- 5 replies

I have what I believe to be the original DC for our company's domain. I would think this server was a BDC promoted to PDC and then upgraded to Windows 2000. Our domain level is Mixed Mode 2003 and I need to decommission this ol windows 2000 DC. He doesn't hold any FSMO roles as they've been transferred across two new 2003 DC's and is not a GC. I was thinking of: running DC promo and de/un promote that server as a DC and then raise our domain level to Native Mode 03. But, my junior admin had an idea to upgrade the 2000 DC to 2003, then set the domain to native mode, then run dcpromo and promote that old server out. Any ideas or suggestions to …

Hi all Windows 2003 AD Formerly, I could type in the partial name of a printer when using the add printer wizard from any XP/Vista client The names no longer appear - I now have to browse the printer server to see all attached printers and add them manually. Is there something I am missing or a setting that needs to be enabled? Your comments would be greatly appreciated Ian McCulloch Sydney, NS Canada

by Guest Girish J Bhatia- 1 reply

I know that in VSS I can specifically control how much size of previous data want to keep but I need to control it through numbers Which means I want to keep only 5 days backups and then flush it. If this can be done using a Scheduler to flush it in 5 days, I would like to know the commands on how to Flush the VSS. Incase I would like to move the VSS data to a remote location or Archive it, any solutions? Any info would be great! -- Girish J Bhatia MOSS Certified, SharePoint Certified, MCSE2003, MCDBA, CCNA, CCNP, CCSA

Two DC's question
by Guest Dave Mc- 4 replies

I have a very small network (15 workstations) with 2 servers (A, B) both of which are DC's. "A" has all fsmo roles. When "A" goes down, users cannot be authenticated thru "B". I thought, even with no fsmo roles on "B", the network would still be pretty much functional when a DC went down ?? Is there something fundamentally wrong with my network ?

Windows Server 2003 to 2007
by Guest karlman- 3 replies

I am currently running a single Windows 203 STD server which is also my Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 server. I am wanting to upgrade to 2008 and Exchange 2007. I am having some issues with the current server so I rather not do any kind of upgrade and instead wipe it out and start from scratch. Is there a best practice on how to do this? Should I bring up a temporary domain controller and join it to the domain before killing my server? If I just wiped the server and installed 2007 would I be able to restore my Exchange 2003 backups to the new Exchange 2007 server? If I just wiped the server would I keep the new domain name the same? Could I lose access …

Hi! I have several machines (about 27) I manage in a neat workstation config I put together all by myself! I am so proud... still undergoing testing, and it is almost perfect. It runs across three floors, work rooms, and private rooms in a youth hostel I manage. I am working on building a completely Vista based system eventually... but now it is a hybrid Windows XP & Vista system.... (Vista Ultimate all the way baby! Vista is very awesome and I love it! I miss some of the way XP worked, but it takes some time to get used to.... I am evolving) I am kinda a tech-geekees in terms of tinkering with my machines!, ... so, gulp, here goes my novice question, s…

Win2K3 R2 x64 SP2 DNS & name resolution problem.
by Guest Chuck Chopp- 1 reply

I have a Win2K3 R2 x64 SP2 test environment running under VMware Workstation v6.03 on a Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 host system with 16 GB of RAM and 2x Quad-core XEON processors. There are 2 DCs and 2 member servers. Both DCs are also DNS servers. Each of the 4 systems has 2 virtual NICs configured. The primary IP addressing scheme is in the 172.31.x.x/16 network with static IP address assignment on each NIC, and each system has a NIC that is part of that network. Those NICs also have the IP bindings configured such that they register with the DNS servers. In order for these systems to be able to access the Internet for things like Microsoft Update, etc..., e…
