Copying folders with specific names (perhaps using ROBOCOPY)
by Guest Jake R- 3 replies

I have a server with a fairly complex folder structure that needs certain folders copied to another location. Essentially, there are many folders and subfolders all over the D: drive. In most of the subfolders there is a folder called "Archive". Inside these Archive folders is the data that I need to move to another server. Does ROBOCOPY have a way of copying only folders with certain names? I know how to copy files using wildcards to only copy certain filenames. I am hoping that the same folder structure would be duplicated on the destination server. I have tried the following command, but of course it did not work (I do not think that wildcards are al…

0-byte .mdmp file on program exit
by Guest Mathias Koerber- 0 replies

What could make a service on a Windows Server 2003 create a 0-sized (ie empty) <processname>.<pid>.mdmp file on exit. On another system (both are Win Server 2k SP2) this does not happen. It happens when the process exits cleanly itself or if it is stopped using the windows service management console. I had a look at patch differences between both systems and nothing seems to be related to those empty .mdmp files. The service runs fine in any other respect, it's just these files being generated whenever it is stopped. Any hints could be appreciated

Is it possible to upgrade a Windows 2000 SP4 Chinese to Windows 2003 English Domain? Could I just run adprep, move over my FSMO's and be done? We use Static IP DNS only hits our Domain controllers. Feels too easy. Please let me know what you think

Files Locked for no reason....
by Guest PK- 0 replies

Hi all this may be really basic but my team and i are totally stumped.. (Im posting here first but it could be an XL issue as it appears thus far only to affect XL docs..) Users are randomly experiencing the message on their own documents when attempting a rename or delete. "Cannot delete file: It is being used by another person or program." Normally we would just find the thread/open file and close them on the server, EXCEPT they are not listed NOR does any unlock software report them as currently in use. A reboot of the server resolves the issue but after the first rename the issue then re-occours. Domain admins and the relavent users hav…

Help: Trial Version Ended
by Guest bondo- 3 replies

I have a 2003 R2 on a -ready- production server. It is one of many other legit servers. I need to know what I can do to upgrade to the retail version. I read an article/response to a similar question by Meinolf Weber. I have good backups I hope for Exchange and other data. I have a legit VLK and according to Mr. Meinolf, long story short, boot from the disk and enter the key that I have. Will that erase the Exchange settings? Will I lose the AD settings? Should I demote the machine? Should I just go for it? There is no other option I have found besides a striaght up reinstall. A few more questions. Can I use any 2003 R2 disks? Do I need to call M…

Server still functions, but cannot log in locally or remotely
by Guest Chris Benton- 2 replies

Running Windows Server 2003 SP1 on an HP DL380. A couple of weeks ago, we developed a problem where we are unable to log in to the server either locally or remotely. It will work okay for a few days, then we get a gray screen with no login prompt, and we simply get disconnected after a few minutes; however, clients are able to log in, authenticate, and use server resources as if nothing's wrong. Only a hard shutdown/restart clears up the problem. The event logs show nothing amiss. Eventually, a login prompt will show up at the console, but the login process takes over an hour and when I'm finally logged in, I notice that no services are running at all. If …

Windows Explorer Slow to List Files When Browsing Folder
by Guest Paul Jenkins- 3 replies

I recently upgraded a server from Windows 2000 Server Standard SP4 to Windows 2003 Server Standard SP2. Actually, it wasn't really an upgrade per-se because I built the new machine from scratch and restored the files to the new server. *SOME* users are reporting Windows Explorer is very slow to open one particular shared folder containing approx. 70,000 files. I still have the 2000 server ... when I open that folder across the network from my XP SP3 workstation it takes approx. 20 seconds to open, yet the same folder open the W2K3 server can take up to 6 minutes to open! The users who complain about the W2K3 server being slow use a variety of hard-cod…

SYSPREP on OEM Versions of Windows
by Guest Will- 1 reply
Is the SYSPREP utility supposed to not work on OEM versions of Windows? On a Windows 2003 Server Web Edition computer we accidentally used the same key on two installs. On the second install - not wanting to lose installed applications - we copied over the SYSPREP.EXE utility from the original install CD. When we try to run this and "reseal" the computer we get a message that the SYSPREP utility is incompatible with that Windows. It's unclear whether this message is because of the type of license (OEM) or because of the version of Windows (Web Edition). -- Will

Full Server Backup
by Guest Artificer- 2 replies

I have been playing around with the Full Server Backup feature on windows server 2008. It looks great but I wonder if it is truly a “FULL” server backup. For example I want to know if the feature will be able to protect SQL Server & Exchange. I would like to be able to do a backup that is basically an “image” and I want to know if the Full server backup will do the trick. Also I would appreciate if anybody could please point to a tool that allows me to do the same on windows server 2003. Please be aware that I am not looking for fancy features like restore a specific file. I just want something that can do a full system backup/image without stopping the …

Shutdown a server using the power button
by Guest Artificer- 7 replies

I have a windows server 2008 standard computer at home and I am using it as a home domain server. I don’t want to use a keyboard or monitor on that server. Everything works fine but the shutdown button. In order to shutdown the computer with it I have to first press ctrl-alt- del and then press the shutdown button. How can I make it to shutdown with a single button click?

SQL Server 2005 Fehler nach DCPROMO
by Guest Herbert Ehlert- 2 replies

Licensing and Hyper-v
by Guest Glenn Clark- 1 reply

I need to install 4 separate servers on a network,1 running exchange. I am trying to understand the licensing for 2008 standard server 64 bit with hyper-v. Would I be right in saying if I bought 1 big machine and put 64 bit 2008 standard server on it with 25 users, I can then run 3 instances using hyper-v without buying another version of 2008 for 25 users. Thanks Glenn
