Is there any response from a Microsoft person? I have Technet on this user account and would like some advice please? I am running NTbackup as administrator on our only DC in domain and getting the following error: "Backup started on 27-06-2008 at 10:55. Could not access portions of directory System State\SYSVOL. You may not have permission to open the file, or the directory may be missing or damaged. Please contact the owner or administrator." This domain was split away from another company and this DC was given all the FSMO roles. Everything seems to be working fine but cannot find out how to detemine want this error is and how to fix?

I have a user that moved from one location to another. Changed the Home Folder in AD to point to the new share. ie: \\server1\home\user to \\server2\home\user Also changed the My Documents location on the local workstation to point to the new share. Had to remove the registry key that prevents local user from changing My Documents location. Off and on for what appears to be no clear reason, it reverts back to the old share in AD. The Profile/Home Folder just switches back to the previous server. It causes the workstation to point to the wrong place so the user can't see any files. This happens sporadically and when I switch both AD and the My D…

Gordon Brown’s cabinet -creation of human-animal hybrid embryos
by Guest Antony Vijayendran- 0 replies

In a rare move, Catholic politicians in Britain’s Labour government have been allowed to opt out of government legislation that goes against the faith. The decision was made after three Catholic members of Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s cabinet made it known they opposed legislation that would allow the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos, and loosen restrictions on in-vitro fertilization treatments for single women and homosexual couples. The news was welcomed by England’s Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor. “It means they recognised the importance of conscience and they shouldn ´t force people on a Bill which touches http://www.vaticans.org/index.ph…

I have Windows 2003 with some shared printers. My problem is that when a client in the domain adds a shared network printer the installed printer on the client machine doesn't take the adjusted values in the print driver like the paper size, tray..etc. Moreover when the client try to adjust the values i doesn't get saved so he has to change it every time with every print job? Cannot connect to printers
by Guest Gorge Lucas- 6 replies

Hi all, I have a few printers connected to desktops that are listed in active directory. One of them is a Laser Jet 5 and a Laser Jet 1022 (HP). The machines that these are connected to print fine. Anyone on the network trying to connect to these printers just sit there with the search light... after awhile it times out. Happens to all the printers coming off desktops, and these are different desktops. The client machines are XP (SP2, SP3) in a mixed domain 2000 and 2003. The 2003 domain controller has only just been bought online, before this it was just 2000 and still having the same problems. I've checked permissions and nothing seems to be mi…

Is it possible to stop Windows from creating the 'My Picture's / 'My Music' , etc. folders when user's 'My Documents' are redirected to a server (through a GPO)? I would like to have each staff member within a department have their 'My Documents' folder redirected to their departmental share but don't want a bunch of 'My Music' and 'My Pictures' folders automatically created. Am new to SMS. To do a client push of an application silently onto workstations using SMS, must I use an MSI package? Can the vendor simply supply an installation exe that requires no user interaction to install the app onto a remote workstation thru SMS? Thanks for any and all ideas, Mark

DFS Replication and file sharing violations
by Guest Richard Price- 1 reply

Hi, I am using the version of DFS that was introduced in Win2k3 R2, and keep getting errors appearing in the replication group diagnostic reports to do with file sharing violations - in other words, files that were held open by someone when the replication service tried to replicate the file. Now, at the moment I am simply ignoring these as there is little you can do, but the fact that the replication diagnostic report flags them up as errors rather than warnings is a little worrisome - is there actually something I should infact be doing? Cheers Richard

I'm trying to use robocopy to do a restartable-copy (/ZB) of a backup image from my server to a full-disk encrypted (truecrypt) hard drive. Whenever robocopy gets to 94.4% of the file though, it starts bombing out saying that "The handle is invalid." The whole message is... ----------------------------------------- 2008/07/07 14:25:20 ERROR 6 (0x00000006) Copying File \\server\share \file The handle is invalid. Waiting 30 seconds... Retrying... ----------------------------------------- It just sits there and keeps retrying. If I kill the job and try to restart it, it starts over from the begining, the /ZB switch isn't working. Is there some size limit f…

I was able to to uninstall terminal service licensing from add/remove windows components. I then enabled remote desktop administration from the system properties. Every time I try to remote into the server. An error message comes up telling me that the server has no terminal server available to give a license. Also when got to administrative tools. Move CA from W2k3 DC to W2k8 DC
by Guest RVilla- 2 replies

We are not sure what path we want to take concerning our CA server. It is an Enterprise CA on a W2K3 domain controller that needs to be decomissioned due to age of hardware. We are looking for the best approach.. Here are our thoughts and options: 1. Move the CA server to a new W2K8 Std x64 Edition server that will be a DC 2. Promote the W2K8 server to be a DC, Create a new CA server on the new W2K8 server, create new certificates and decommission the old CA. We have issued a very small number of certificates for in-house use. Also, we are not tied to keeping the same server name. From KB298138, I see that we will need to keep the the same server name, …

Applying your personal settings
by Guest Wowbagger- 4 replies

My server did a hard stop this afternoon (0x000000 from what I could see). The machine rebooted but when I logged on the machine sat at "Applying your personal settings" for 20 minutes before I forced a hard reset, which of course made the server run a chkdsk on the volume that takes well over 30 minutes to complete. What makes a server lock up on "Applying... "? I've seen it before and could only fix it by rebooting into safe mode, logging on, then immediately rebooting normally. I've found many fixes for the problem for client machines, but not a single fix for when a 2003 server is doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

mbr to gpt disks
by Guest gram- 4 replies

We have to expand our disk space on our file server, we are running out of disk space. Unfortunately to do so would go over 2 tb so we have to convert from mbr to gpt. I thought this would be seamless, i.e add the disks in raid the go into windows disk manager and convert. To my horror according to microsoft you have to delete the partition then convert to gpt then you have to go through the hassle of restoring your data. Is there any way of doing this without have to delete data and restore?
