2003 Print Server and Client Driver Updates
by Guest Aaron- 0 replies

Can someone either explain or point me to some documentation on how an XP client interacts with a Server 2003 print server in so far as drivers go? We're having some strange errors with a simple script that runs at logon and adds a default printer to the XP client. We recently built a new print server and modified the scripts to point to the new server. The new server has updated printer drivers and from what we can tell, if the client attempts to download the new driver, the script errors out. Our suspicion is that this is because the user doesn't have permission to update the printer drivers (which we know to be the case). If we log on as an administrator …

I am currently running windows 2003 R2 All information under MMC Extended is blank except for a scroll icon in the upper left corner, I can click on standard and view my information. My other problem is none of my logon scripts will run.. This is the error when i login as administrator: "can't find script engine "vbscript" for script C:\blablabla" I have tried: "regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\vbscript.dll" "regsvr32 VBScript" and "installing WindowsServer2003-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.exe" Nothing worked... Any help would be appreciated.

2003 R2 and FSRM Directory-based quotas
by Guest Adam McKee- 2 replies
A few days ago I implemented the FSRM quota system because I prefer the directory-path-based quota system to the file ownership-based system. Since then, and on a few occasions, I've received alerts about quota violations for directory paths that have NOT reached their quota. Case in point being a path (let's call it D:\User) that had a 500MB quota. With 450MB in that directory, new files were unable to be written because of the quota. I deleted the quota entry in FSRM and recreated it, and now the quota works as expected again. Any idea what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

2003 R2 Quota+disk size
by Guest group policy!- 0 replies

Hi Everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong section but theres a few different topics in it. I have an server 2003 R2 setup, using the FSRM for quota on users homespaces. These quota work fine with e-mails and reports being generated. However when the user maps a network drive for their homespace instead of the drive showing their quota'd storage it shows the actual size of the physical disk on the server (the partition size where their network folder/homespace is stored). Is there a way around this? Or can a script get the actual quota applied to a folder, I don't mind if its still wrong on the mapped drive because the users can't see the drive pr…

I took over an IT gig and after looking at the server there are lots of updates to be added to the server. When there haven't been any updateds added for a long time is it best to just add then all or to just do a few at a time? This is the only server for this group. It is the exchange sever, file share server, and the internet dns/ gateway. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I am working to get a new print server built. I know the recommendation is to put the spooler directory on another partition, how much memory do you need for a high volume - critical print server? are there any other big recommendations for print servers?

2003 server 100% cpu, unmanageable.
by Guest gscanga- 3 replies

I have a system (dc actually) that spikes at 100% cpu and stays that way. I can't get any information whatsoever on the system when it does this (ie, pslist to check cpu processes, mmc to check event logs, RDP to remotely view, etc.) Several times, I've waited 15-20 minutes for a console session to display with no luck. So, after I cold-boot the machine, I check the event logs and can't find anything. is there something that I can proactively setup and let run that will grant me better insight into what may be happening when or prior to cpu spikes? Perhaps perfmon? Thanks.

2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000
by Guest Eddie- 7 replies

Hello, I am planning to upgrade 2 DC's running 2000 standard to 2003 standard r2. These servers are the PDC and BDC of the domain and the only servers still running windows 2000 left in the domain. I've been running in mixed mode for a couple of years and have upgraded all other servers except for the 2 DC's. I am also running an exchange 2003 server in this environment. I have download the following document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379 should these instructions be sufficient for what I want to accomplish? Thanks, Eddie

2003 Server Boot issue
by Guest Joe- 3 replies
I have a Windows 2003 server that was powered down gracefully for some building maintenance over the weekend. I went to start it up today and it will not boot normally. No patches were applied to it prior to shutdown. The server will boot in Safe Mode with Networking/Command Prompt without issue, but booting normally I get the Windows 2003 boot screen with the travelling eye so it looks like it is booting but is just hung. I have let it go for as long as an hour without getting anywhere. I have gone in and used msconfig, but any of the options results in more of the same. I need to get this server up and running again. Any ideas would be appreci…

2003 Server crashing
by Guest mbsmith81@gmail.com- 4 replies

Hi all, I've got a Windows 2003 Server Std. Ed. running on a PowerEdge SC1420, and it's been crashing a few minutes into bootup. It's an AD DC, as well as an application server (running SQL 2000). At first I believed it was a hardware issue (the LED indicator lights light up in a certain sequence), but now believe it's OS-based. Server will crash when booting into anything but Safe Mode or SM with Networking. I've checked for a memory.dmp file, and there isn't one there, so it's crashing without creating a dump file. I've booted into Recovery Console several times, and run checkdisk /R, but that doesn't seem to help either. I've also used msconfig in Safe mod…

2003 Server EE App Event Warning Source: PerfDisk EventID: 2001
by Guest John T. Seelig- 2 replies

On approximately 5 of our Production IBM blade 8832's we get this error occasionally. No matter what I have tried it keeps logging these every 10 seconds. Restarting the server resolves the problem, but obviously this is less than ideal. According to the conventional wisdom I can find this is due to disk performance counters being turned off. This being a 2003 server, my understanding these are always turned on. Any assistance regarding this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

2003 server hangs after reboot
by Guest rs121- 3 replies

Hi All, We have a Windows 2003 server ( Model: HP Proliant DL385 ) running SQL Server 2000, in which we always experience issues. The issue is that Windows Server 2003 hangs after every reboot. Sometimes, it has also bluescreened and has created a memory dump. First time, when it bluescreened, the memory dump points to cpqteam.sys and the second time it pointed to afd.sys. On speaking to HP, they asked us to update the Proliant support pack and NCU, but that didn't helped for a longer period. The Server will come to normal after 8 successive reboots. The server also throws the event viewer with the following log such as Browser error, during hang. Model i…

by Guest rob- 1 reply

Hi, I've got 2 identical servers (1 spare) My live server died today (Funny how it was after a Windows update!) I placed the disk in the other machine and it wasn't recognised so I couldn't get the data off it. So, I went home and got yesterdays backup tape (1 Hour Drive) I restored the tape and the machine won't boot. I then reinstalled Windows and applied service pack 2, then restored the tape. I selected overwite all files or was it overwrite if older. When I boot up It hangs on acpitabl.dat I tried to get into the recovery console and I cannot log on as the Administrator Account was renamed to Fred and I have a £ in the password. I assu…

2003 Server hangs on shutdown w/KVM
by Guest Peter- 1 reply

I have a number of 2003-R2 (SP2) servers (various motherboards) that hang upon shutdown when restarting after WSUS (v3) updates have run This never happened when we were running Windows 2000 (SP4) on exactly the same servers All are monitored via KVMs and all I have to do to kick the server back into life is to change to that server on the KVM and shutdown/ restart runs through normally. I'm sure it's a KVM issue (they are all different models of Serverlink products with PS2/VGA connectors). I've seen similar discussions about modifying the ACPI settings on the motherboard but I'm not exactly sure what it is that I should be looking at changing Suggesti…

2003 Server R2 SP2 AD problems
by Guest Josh - DSTECH- 1 reply

Good morning all, I have been having issues with a 2003 Server R2 with SP2 for about a month now. It is the lone domain controller in a single-server environment with less than 20 user accounts/client PCs. About once a week AD seems to stop responding completely. After a reboot everything comes back up fine and works again for approximately a week. During the down time I get Event IDs of 4000 and 9999 repeatedly in my DNS Server log as well as Userenv - 1053 repeatedly in the Application log. If I attempt to open ADUC I get an error of "The server is not operational". dcdiag comes back with the following: Domain Controller Diagnosis Performing initia…

Just upgraded from 1GB to 4GB on the Domain Controller. The motherboard sees all 4GB, on the System Memory check, only 3.3GB is seen and in the OS, only 3.58 is seen. BIOS or Windows problem? IIRC, there is a fix for it, I just can't seem to remember what or where it is.

I'm a Novell guy working with my first w2003 server. I'm use to a "rconj" utility which gives me access to the server like I was sitting at the local console. How do I get the same with a 2003 server. What I have read so far seems to point me towards a remote command line console. Am I missing something? -- Paul

Hi, Have two windows 2003 Domain Controllers. The original DCs is flaky and needs to be rebuilt, hence I need to move all it's roles to the other DC. Whats the order of work to do? I understand it to be Fismo transfer to other DC DNS transfer to other DC DHCP transfer to other DC Disconnet and rebuild server. Do I have to do this in any particular order? The other server is already running a DNS service and is also a GC server.

Hello, could anyone help me identifing cause for almost everydays server restart? It's a HP blade server with W2K3 Server SP2. It's a file server where Services for UNIX is installed and shares some data with NFS. There's nothing in the eventlog before and after the restart what may be the cause.
