Disable Print Job Notification Balloon
by Guest Kathy Meegan- 21 replies

Hello, Is there a way to disable the print job notification balloon in the system tray from the print server so it doesn't have to be configured on each workstation? On the print server I have tried Start/Printers and Faxes/File/Server Properties/Advanced/Unchecked "Show informational messages for network printers" but that doesn't work even after stopping and restarting the print spooler. Can this be set up as a group policy? Can we somehow set the balloon to only appear for a few seconds instead of 15 or 20? Can the balloon be setup so it only appears if there is a problem printing? Thanks, Kathy

File server search
by Guest John- 1 reply

I am not sure where to post this question but I suspect I will get a few... different suggestions. We have an AD domain with 2003R2 servers, and many files stored on server file shares. We would like to use search to look for words inside documents (mostly MS Word, som MS Excel). Most of the clients are XP pro. The search from the clients works sporadically. When we say to search the contents all of the files in a folder and sub-folders sometimes it finds it and sometimes not even though you know it is there. Is there a tool or a better way to do this where the files are? TIA

Question on event log errors
by Guest yepiknowiam- 12 replies

Not sure if someone can help me out with this, but wanted to ask. We have 2 servers (HP ML350 G3) running server 2003 with sp2. About 5 days apart, both started to fail and have issues at the same time, identical errors in the event log. The main system errors are event id 333 (An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in or write out or flush one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry) and event id 773 Server Agents. There also will be some warning at the same time in the application log related to prefdisk, which is weird because we don't track counters. From what I can t…

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem.

Re: XCOPY Insufficient system resources problem. I also am having this problem when trying to copy files using the Windows Explorer. Both systems (target and source) are Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. If I try and "push" files at the target, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." If I try and "pull" the files from the source, I get this error message: "Cannot copy <filename>: Not enough server storage space is available to process this command." I've searched the knowledgebase for both error messages and found solutions to either ancient NT products, some 20…

Terminal Server logon problem
by Guest RGA- 14 replies

I upgraded my SBS 2003 server over the weekend and all went well. In doing so, I had to demote the other DC in my domain and rejoin it to the new SBS server's domain. I now cannot log on to the other DC remotely with terminal server. I have checked all the policy and terminal server settings and permissions and I can't seem to figure it out. I am able to log on with my personal domain acct but the administrator account gets the "To log on to this remote computer you must be granted the Allow log on throuogh Terminal Services right" message. This is really baffling me as I have set all of the settings (I thought) to match those on the SBS 2003 server which …

Hi all. It would be fab if you could help me please! I need to run 2 ftp sites on the same server (windows server 2003). I've got the first one using port 21, but need the second ftp site to use a different port I think (unless there's a way to get 2 ftp sites working on port 21? binding?). so, for my second ftp site I am using port 8001. it works ok with my ftp client with the windows firewall off, but when I turn it on and add port 8001 to it my ftp client doesn't want to connect any more. I've noticed that my ftp client is actually connecting using port 8001 but then switches to an arbiutary port number afterwards when finishing the connection. This…

Exchange 2k7 backup with ntbackup
by Guest mmark751969- 1 reply

I am having to backup my exchange 2007 server with windows backup on windows server 2003. I notice that ntbackup is able to see the e2k7 server and the information stores in it. And it is able to do a backup. What i am wondering is when i go to do a restore - on the restore and managed media tab. I see the both the information stores, the log files and mailbox database folder. But i don't see any catalog information on the right pane in that window(it just says no entries found when i click on either the log files folder or the mailbox database folder). Is this normal, or the way it should be. I am wondering if i need to install the exchange 2k7 management…

Hi, I am trying to put a action plan for the migration of our current domain controller to a new domain controller [as we are running into space issues]. This is what I have came up [this is my first time]. Goal: To successful migrate the existing domain controller (pkserv1) to another server (dc2) Action Plan: 1) installation of windows 2003, application of all available service packs and windows update on dc2 2) network integration of dc2, including domain membership and IP configuration 3) installation of DNS on dc2 [as a secondary zone]. Some background info: the primary zone for DNS is running from the exchange server and the 2 d…

/3gb and /pae switch
by Guest mhowell- 13 replies

I am still trying to completely understand this and I find conflicting information. If I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 8 gb of physical ram and an application that will take advantage of memory above 2 gig would the following make sense. Use the /3g and /pae switches in the boot.ini. 3 gb would goto the application and by using the /pae switch the 5gb remainder would goto the operating system. Is that correct?

Hello all: I know that with Windows Server 2003 you can simply add additional architectures to install 64-bit printer drivers when you have a 32-bit server system and 64-bit clients. However, is there a way to do this with Windows 2000 Server? There is not selection available for WinXP 64-bit. Thanks, John

Problems with SBS 2003 and Domain-Workgroup config
by Guest Teo- 9 replies

Hi guys, I have Windows Small Business 2003 Server installed on my Dell Poweredge. The server came preinstalled as a domain controller. Because I don't have that many XP professional licences, I had to run dcpromo on the server to downgrade it to a regular server without domain controller. Yesterday I was looking at the log files and I saw a SBCore error, that said that the machine was going to shut down in 60 minutes. After this I ran the configuration to bring it back to a domain controller. Everything went well and it took a long time. After the server restarted and prompted me with the login information. No domain was shown, just username and passwo…

can ping server with fqdn but not with netbios name
by Guest Ehren- 8 replies

Hi- I have a very strange issue going on. I installed a new server today and added it to the domain as a member server for hosting user home directories. (Will replace our old slow and crappy server). I can access it just fine using \\servername\share from almost any computer I can come in contact with. However from both of our domain controllers the only way I can ping it or access its shares is by using the fqdn (\\servername.domain.edu.local\share) which is annoying. Both domain controllers serve as AD integrated DNS servers each with itself as its primary and the other as the secondary. ALl IP's are static. all the servers are plugged int…

csrss.exe High I/O in combination with Terminal service
by Guest Vincent- 1 reply
Hi, Currently I’m running into some issues which occur on each and every windows 2003 server that I’m managing: When someone logs in on a server the csrss.exe process starts to use up a lot of disk I/O. It seems to have a minimum of 10 MB/s with a maximum of 80 MB/s although the average seems to be around 30 MB/s. The high I/O continues until the user logs off. The high I/O also stops completely when (and this is especially weird) the Terminal service client screen is minimized, but high disk activity will resume as soon as the screen is restored. I am aware of knowledge base article 934330, and even though the article in question states the fix…

i have no experience w/ windows server but am trying to come up with a way to automate an email. I want to email a file on Server A. (Can't use outlook to send b/c requires user being logged on & then there's outlook's security prompt) every Monday. Windows server is Server B. Is there a way to do this via the windows server? Does smtp just send email w/o security prompts? Can things be sent by the system as opposed to a user being logged on? If anyone could point me in the right direction....I am trying to learn. Not even sure what to be googling. thanks for the help. patti

One of the Windows 2003 Member Servers within our Domain is keeping its local System Time incorrectly. We have repeatedly set the System Time to sync via net time to one of the Time Servers (Domain Controllers). When we perform this function manually from command line using Net Time, the time syncs to the time server and gives us back a "successful" message. Unfortunantly, we see that the local System Clock stays 1 hour behind even after this Windows Time success sync message. What could be causing the Windows Server 2003 to keep its local System Time 1 hour off, and not update its time based on time received from the Domain Controller?

Disconnected network shares
by Guest Jeff- 12 replies

I have approximately 100 users on our network that consists of 7 servers. There are approximately 1 dozen users that get disconnected from one server consistantly. That is a W2K server with network shares. I am pretty sure it is a DNS issue because I can ipconfig /release /renew and that works (most of the time). Sometimes I do not even have to do that, just click on the shared drive and it comes back. Thanks, Jeff

Disk errors on OS drive: can't mirror or backup
by Guest Neil- 12 replies

I have an IDE drive that hosts the OS (Windows 2000 Server) on my Exchange 2000 server. I have another IDE drive installed, and I attempted to mirror this drive using Win2k's software RAID but halfway through the process it aborted, stating that the original drive had errors. The Exchange DBs are on a seperate RAID-5 array and I have backups of my data so I'm not so worried about that, but I cannot mirror this drive or get a good backup of it. When I look at the drive in Disk Management it has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point next to the drive and it says Errors. I believe I may have some physically bad sectors. What would be the bes…
