DNS settings
by Guest David C- 12 replies

The XP client machines seem to be slower accessing the internet via our 2003 server. I have the client TCP/IP settings to point to the AD server as the primary DNS IP address. When I go to access the internet, I get "Looking up www.Google.com" in lower left and there is a delay. The 2nd time I try with a different www address I get "Waiting for www.dell.com" (for example) and the page is very slow. I tested the DSL speed and all is fine with that, but it appears to be a DNS problem. Am I right? and how can I set client correctly? Thanks. p.s. I tried adding our outside (ISP) DNS as the secondary on my client and the initial internet was very fast.…

by Guest Joe Nocella- 4 replies

I have a couple of users that are receiving the following error message when they attempt to open an excel file on a personal network home share. The share resides on a Windows 2003 server which is to date with all service packs and updates. The client is Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates applied. I've checked out the following KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814112 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214073 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313472 When I copied the folder that contains the files to another server and attempt to open open of the excel documents I do not receive the error. So it's something to do with this one serv…

Installing New Work Stations
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

I do computer support for a non-profit organization. They just had 10 new Pentium 4 computers donated. The machines have fresh installations of XP SP2. It takes a long time to install SP3 and the updates. Plus, there are several other applications that need to be installed on each computer. Hopefully I can save some time by building one machine and then imaging the drive to the others. (All software is properly licensed.) So, I will use this occasion to try to understand a perpetual problem that I have: Giving administrator rights to the local machine after the work station joins the domain of the Windows 2003 Server. I have tried a number of ways, an…

Previous Windows Server 2003 Web Edition CDs we have installed had the volume label NRMWOEM_EN, which corresponds to Web Edition 32-bit OEM. This is according to the Microsoft KB 889713: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889713 Last week we purchased a license for Windows Server 2003 Web Edition 32-bit from an outfit online that has great feedback named Royal Discount. What they shipped us is a CD that has the label CRMWOEM_EN. Can someone please identify what is the C in that label? The license does not appear to be compatible with virtual machines built with the other volume label, so this is why we want to understand what we bought in mo…

remote user login problem on server 2003
by Guest Jasper- 0 replies

I am having a problem with some users logging into server 2003 from a remote desktop. I have had 2 users try to login and they just get a black screen. If they login at the server it works or if I login at their desktop I can login and get the remote desktop. I have checked the RDP settings and checked the accounts at the server. If I make them a new server login it works. I am using this workaround for now. Thanks for any help.

What happened to Windows 2008 server remote access?
by Guest user- 0 replies
I have bought 5 new 2008 servers to replace my 2003 servers. I installed a USR external modem and enabled Dialup networking Route & Remote access. All went well, no errors, Routing & remote access for dialup running ok. Modem shows ok, did a test dial out, OK. Modems will not answer on any of the 5 servers, AA light blinks but thats it. Is there something new in 2008 server I am missing, just to get the modem to answer? I'll worry about authentication later.. I had no problems with this on 2003 servers / same modems. I even tried a diff modem on one. Thanks BUC

Windows 2003 crash
by Guest sean- 0 replies

one of my server which was running Windows 2003 Server w/ Sp2 crashed due to hard drive problem. The server had a 120gig HD which was partition into two. 1st partition was 30gig which was Windows installed and 2nd partition was unallocated. After rebooting with Windows 2003 CD and went into recovery, I cannot see the directory listing when issuing "dir". I get an error about an error occurred during directory enumeration. I ran chkdsk /p and it indicates another error. What I found out was there is NO free space available on the 1st partition. When I ran Windows 2003 setup, it does see the partition but it indicates it is in "raw" filesystem. I download…

Unlock a Locked login script?
by Guest Bjarne Duelund- 1 reply

Does anyone know how to 'unlock' a locked login script? Other than reboot the server. The script in question is a simple .cmd batch file that gets locked, so I can't overwrite it with changes. The server is running Windows Server R2 SP2 x64 in cluster configuration, tools like ProcessExplorer don't run on x64. Until now I have solved it by copying the script to a new folder and then move the share, but it would be nice with a proper solution. - Bjarne Duelund

Application crash in Windows 2003 Server SP2
by Guest Rajavelu- 0 replies

Hi, There is a legacy application that runs fine from Win 98 SE up till Win 2003 Server. The application makes connectivity to an HTTPS URL. When the app is to use proxy server for its connectivity, the application crashes in Win 2K3 SP2 Server and the same works for other operating systems (even in Win 2K3 Server without SP1 or SP2). I could see the following in system's Application Log: Faulting application XYZ.exe, version 4.5.2.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x000224b2 There is also a Dr Watson log that succeeds above log and has the following; The application, C:\ABC\XYZ.exe, generated an application error …

New Users --> specific group
by Guest Starbuck- 6 replies

When a new user is created, they are automatically added to the "Domain Users" group. I would like to create(or modify) some kind of a Group policy that also adds them to another group as well, automatically. Is this do-able? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks much, *$ aa#2290

Deleted Files Re-Appear
by Guest RAZ4183- 2 replies

I have a recurring issue with one of my users. We use roaming profiles on our network (windows 2003 servers SP2) his laptop has XP Pro SP2. Several months ago he deleted a number of Word/Excel files from his desktop but they would re-appear after he rebooted his system. I deleted the same files from his desktop, his locally cached profile, and from his roaming profile. This seemed to have solved the issue. Now those same files are back on his desktop several months later. This exact same situation happened last year with these same files. What is causing this and how can I permanently remove these files?

I'm building a new DC for our network that will replace an older machine. This machine will host FSMO,GC and DNS for the network. It's a Dell server in a RAID-1 array with a PERC 6/i SCSI controller. I've already run dcpromo on the machine and noticed the event logs warning about the write caching. This dis kcontroller does have battery backup on it so I believe I'm ok to leave this enabled? What does eveyone think in general about this? I want the the event logs clean as a whistle before I continue moving roles or at least know that I have a server in optimal condition. Should I disable write caching or not? Thanks

Unable to set up ODBC setting
by Guest Chris- 1 reply

I have a Win 2008 server that will host a front application that has an Oracle database backend. Prior to Win 2008, I would install the Oracle client and all would be good. I installed the Oracle client on the 2008 Server and got no errors. However when I go to "Create new data source", Oracle is not an option as it would be on 2003. Any suggestions on what I am missing. We are trying to move forward with 2008 deployments and would prefer not have to revert back to 2003. Thanks -- ccoates
