Windows 2003 partition setup
by Guest Myron Oakley- 9 replies

I have installed Windows 2003 server on a new Dell 2900. This machine has a raid 5 config of 500 gig. I took the default c: partition size of 12 gig when I installed. This machine will be run Terminal server and also act as a file server. I have now realize with Program Files and Document and Settings folders on this partition we'll have immediate problem. I'm either going to have to resize the C: partition *or* reconfigure the system with these folders on a new drive. There isn't a lot of information on this subject available. How are the real world admins doing this? My gut reaction is to simply divide the array right in two 250 gig volumes, …

After reading many MS KB's on the subject of security I am lost when it comes to editing "ESCDomains" in Regedit. I can delete unwanted "domains" one at a time, but there are too many (perhaps thousands). Is there a way to hold down Shift to highlight more than one at a time, or is there a better way to delete in bulk? Many thanks! -- Rusty

Question on Robocopy
by Guest Will- 1 reply

We want to use the robocopy utility to copy large multi-gigabyte backup files from a local hard drive to a central file server. My question is what would happen if robocopy started to copy over a large file that was being actively written to by the native Windows backup application? Will robocopy simply refuse to copy any of the file at all? Will it copy up to the last byte being written and then hang? In general would it be a safe practice to use robocopy on a backup file that is being actively created? -- Will

Win 2003 services with srvany.exe
by Guest Saga- 0 replies

Hi all, I have an app that I need to run as a service. I used SRVANY and INSTSRV to accomplish this in the test XP Pro computer; however, I am having problems doing this on a Win 2003 Server (not SBS) SP1 computer. When I start the service nothing happens, no log is created. I then tried running the Calculator applet as a service and got same results. FYI: I did the same with XP Pro and Calculator started just fine. I had a look around and found articles such as: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q152/4/60.asp&NoWebContent=1 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890/EN-US/ http://support…

I have a customer with a very big problem. If he opens the Internet Explorer from his terminal Server 2003, he is able to surf the internet as usual, but if he opens another program at the server Windows locks. I he closes the internet, the server locks totally for that user. He is able to press CtrlAltDel and enter the taskmanager. If he ends the processes IExplore and explorer and after that starts explorer as a new task he is able to run normally again – until he enters the internet again. I have tried the following. This happens for all users and directly on the server. Delete temporary internetfiles and cookies. Delete the content of C:\WINDOWS\IIS…

"Access Denied" for Home Directories
by Guest NetGoofy- 2 replies

Not sure which Group to post this. All network users "Home Directories" are configured in AD under the Profile Tab H: - \\servername\users\%username% I have a few (2 to 4) users that receive an "Access Denied" message when they attempt to open thier (H:) drive. This doesn't happen all the time - it is very spartic. All I do to correct the issue is disconnect the (H:) drive and re-map it and unchecking the "connect at login" option - because I know it will reconnect because of thier profile settings when they login - and it does. They don't have to reboot/logout-login or anything of that nature. By just being able to re-map the drive tells me tha…

Hi, I am going to instal a WSUS solucion for a company X. Company X was wondering if there is a web site for monitoring Windows patches as they are released, based on other companies experience with the patches(like a forecast)? -- Best regards, Håvard Kristiansen Technical consultant Message posted via http://www.winserverkb.com

Windows 2008 Sysprep
by Guest Dylan- 2 replies

First of all, I understand Microsoft only support preparing system running WinOS using sysprep but, 2008 version of sysprep do not support OS that doesn't use standard c: drive as system drive letter. We created a default system with necessary applications installed but one requirement on this image is not using c: as system drive. When running sysprep with an unattend.xml that specified a drive letter, e.g. n:, sysprep process won't complete. Sysinternal has not release a new version of newsid for windows 2008. Has anyone any suggestion on any other utilties that generate new sid for a system and works with windows 2008? Thanks.
