What is the difference between 2003 Standard and 2003 Standard R2? Can anything that runs on W2k3 Standard run on R2? Why would you buy R2 rather than Standard? Thanks for your help.

changing the default User folder location ?
by Guest Anthony [MVP]- 1 reply

You only have the option to change the location of the user Profiles when you first build the server. Otherwise you can use Folder Redirection to move the largest parts of the profile to the other drive. We run a thin client (Citrix) network on a Windows 2003 domain. Our press office would like to save specific RSS feeds to internet explorer (we have IE-7 throughout our organisation). Although they can add these to IE RSS feed favourites, they are not saved to the roaming profile when the user logs off. Has anyone come across this, and if so what is the fix? Many thanks, QH

Hi, I'm having some problems with NTBackup. We currently have 5 servers which we have two NTBackup jobs set-up on each server. One backup job for each server is for backing up system state. The next backup job which runs after that backs up the files and then the system state backup. The problem that I am getting is that on some days the backups on different servers fail, its currently random as to which backup will fail and on what day. When they fail the error log always contains the following: Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media. Error reported: Unknown error. Then if it was an exchange backup Error: SERVER\…

Re: Another batch file question
by Guest JohnB- 5 replies

Re: Another batch file question Well it worked when I ran it live. But it didn't work when I ran it in Scheduled Tasks. And I can not figure out why. I copied the beginning of the batch file below. It copies about 10 folders, only 1 is shown there. It seemed to have failed at the very beginning. There was no folder with the current date. It never got created. Which would explain why the rest of it failed. So I created a test batch file that only creates the folder. Ran it in scheduled tasks, and wouldn't you know, it worked fine. Any ideas? I'm totaly stumped on this one. TIA "Pegasus (MVP)" <I.can@fly.com.oz> wrote in message …

by Guest Gaurav- 1 reply

Dear folks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, We are using windows server 2003 Service pack 1. We used to take backup in LTO daily (normal mode) with system state. There is small confusion, when we restore OS due to any hardware problem. we have following 2 practice :- PRACTICE 1: 1. First we install OS. 2. Then try to restore full backup from Tape. PRACTICE 2: 1. First we should install OS. 2. Second install service pack 1 & all security patches. 3. After that restore full backup from tape WHICH practice is best… Plz help.. If you need any more information plz let me know.. Garuav

Re-Enabling Local Administrators Account
by Guest Will- 4 replies
Okay, this one must get asked three times a month, but I'm not finding a ready answer. We disabled the local administrator account through group policy on a computer. We then unfortunately disjoined that computer from a domain at the domain controller. The computer cannot be logged into by any administrator: it's not in the domain any more, and the local administrator is disabled. How do I re-enable the local administrator account? I have an ERD Commander 2005 boot disk. I thought the LockSmith program on that CD was supposed to have a checkbox to re-enable the administrator's account, but I don't find it. Instead, LockSmith just changes th…

Starter GPOs
by Guest Mike- 4 replies

So we logged in as a Domain Admin on Windows Vista SP1 and managed a native Windows Server 2003 Forest/Domain by GPMC. All DC's are R2/SP2. No schema updates for Vista/2008 have been applied. We created the Starter GPOs folder. We then delegated to a user group the permissions to Create Starter GPOs. We log in as a member of the delegated group (not domain admin) and unable to create Starter GPOs - we receive Access Denied. Looking on SYSVOL at the Starter GPO folder, it creates an empty GUID named folder. Of course if we log in as domain admin we can create/modify/delete starter gpos. Any ideas?

Domain Trust
by Guest barrycuda72- 0 replies

Senario: Company A Company B, there is a secure VPN tunnel between the 2 companies. No trust was in place. A user in company A may need access to a file share at company B. So company B created a user account on B's AD for user in A. User A tries to access the share, it prompts them for credentials, they type in their company B account and all is good. Sometime later a trust is established between AD's at A & B. Now when User in company A tries to access that same share at B it no longer works. They do not get a login. The obvious choice would seem to grant User at A rights thru the trust to this resource. However this would require a ton of work b…

Windows 2008 Licensing Question
by Guest Richard Morey- 2 replies

Hi -- I work for a small development company and we are currently using hosted services for web, e-mail and share point. We are considering bringing this in house and I have a question about licensing. We are looking at a 2-CPU machine to run Windows 2008 along with Microsoft Exchange Server. We currently have a total of 15 users but may expand beyond this point. Do we need licenses for both Windows and Exchange ? I have found "Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 10 Client - Retail" online, however, this does not specifically say how many CPUs it supports. I also found "Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 32/64bit 1-4CPU 5CLT - OEM" which I ass…
