Power (230V) down during a thunderstorm. 2003 server machines power supply damaged. Rreplaced it and rebooted machine (first time in >3 years). Noticed that display settings were down to SVGA (800 x 600) and could not bee changed. Replaced video card (same model) and rebooted. No success. Settings dialog will accept moving the slider to a higher res (e.g. 1024 x 768) but the screen stays att 800 x 600. Same thing with screen saver and energy saving options. Dialogs accepts new option but no change in machine behavior. When coming back to dialog the previous values/options are still there?!? Other than this 2003 server works like before. Up time …

How to copy and rename a GP
by Guest Jim in Cleveland- 1 reply

I am running Windows 2003 server (DC). We have an Adult, Children's and Teen department. I just finished creating a GP for the Teen Department. I would like to copy this GP to the Children's group now and make a few changes for that department as well. I would also like to rename the copied GP for the Teen Dept. How do I go about doing this? I followed the directions for copying a GPO from the MS web site and that worked fine. But when I tried to rename the GP in the Children's Department, it also renamed the GP that I copied it from? I'm trying to avoid having to create a new GP for Childrens from scratch.

Obtaining replacement media (Server 2003 Enterpprise)
by Guest Pheasant PluckerĀ®- 4 replies

Hi there, I recently purchased a used Dell 2650 and need to re-install the OS. The server shipped originally with Windows Server Enterprise 2003, 1-8 CPU, 25 Clt. I have the Product Key on the CoA on the case of the server but no CD/DVD media. My first point of call will of course be Dell but I am guessing they will only have replacement media for R2 in stock. Should Dell be unable to supply replacement media what other options do I have? Would Microsoft be willing to replace the media? Is it possible to obtain an evaluation version and enter my Product Key to 'unlock' it as the previous owner seems to think? Failing all of the above options i…

Prompt user for protected folders
by Guest Jasper Recto- 4 replies

I have a folder that allows access to certain users. Is it possible to have that folder prompt for a user and password when people try to save files to it? It would need to prompt them when they are saving from excel or word as opposed to somebody trying to copy a file into it. Is this possible? Thanks, Jasper

Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 - On a 2nd DC, I'm unable to load software when I'm signed on as network administrator. The error message indicates that there are insufficient rights to perform the install. AD replicates normally and I'm able to access all network shared folders.

Server 2008: Print driver installation woes
by Guest Steve Friedl [MVP]- 3 replies

Hello all, I'm running into an unusual problem with my first Server 2008 installation: I can't change printer drivers unless I'm the local admin. When in Control Panel -> Printers, right-clicking on a printer + Properties yields the usual Printers dialog box. The driver is selected in the Advanced tab, but it's grayed out unless I'm the local Admin. * When logged in as MACHINE\Administrator, it works * When logged in as DOMAIN\appadmin, it's grayed out. I've confirmed that DOMAIN\appadmin is in the local Administrator's group, and this appadmin account has no trouble doing anything else Admin-y on the system: I can install software, create printe…

PRINT DRIVERS: 32-bit clients on 64-bit servers
by Guest Tom W.- 1 reply
Hi Folks, We are rolling out a 2003 R2 x64 server. When sharing printers it seems to be hit or miss with compatibility during driver installation. Often I get "The server on which ... printer resides does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to install the driver on your local computer, click OK." This happens on both 2000 and XP Pro clients when UNC sharing to the server. Specifically it has been with HP 4000/4100 series LaserJets and Panasonic DP3030 multifunction copy/print/fax units. Is there a simple solution to make sure that 32-bit drivers are published from the 64-bit Windows server? Thanks, Tom W.

Moving CA questions

Good afternoon, We have a Enterprise Root CA setup on a domain member server (Windows server 2003 R2) and no subordinate at this point. This server hosts our Exchange 2003 server. I'm not super familiar with Certificate servers, but shouldn't this should have been setup on a domain controller? I discovered this because our DCs are giving error messages about KDC certificate is now invalid (see below for the full message). I don't want to effect the certificates that are already distributed. Any suggestions? **************************************** Event Type: Warning Event Source: KDC Event Category: None Event ID: 20 Date: 8/15/2008 T…

Resolving host name
by Guest Henry- 3 replies

Two DCs run Windows Server 2003. XP clients cannot resolve a host name of a file server which runs Windows Server 2000. I can PING that Windows 2000 server without any problem. Resolving host names of the DCs are normal. What could have been the cause of the problem that I'm having. It used to work before and I have confirmed the problem is not related to Windows Updates.

I am in the proccess of setting up a NAS on our network to use as a read only archive of older project files. I was looking for the best way to acomplish this. I have looked at robocopy and it seems like it may do the job. Does it maintain the directory structure and can it delete the source files after a successfuly copy? Are there any other products out there I could look into. Thanks in advance for any help. Paul
