unable to join to the domain with netbios name
by Guest OM- 11 replies
Hi I am unable to join my Vista business machine to a windows 2003 domain using netbios name, FQDN is fine. Netbios resolution is working as I can browse the domain and use net use to map network drive on all DCs within the domain. Also, all Windows XP machines can join to the domain with netbios name. Netbios over tcpip is enabled and IPV6/local firewall is disabled. All client machines are on the same subnet. No WINS is used on the network. The error message is: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target do…

What's the difference between Folder Redirection and Offline Folders? In experimenting with this for the first time, it "seems" like they are at least very similar, because after logging in the My Documents folder on the Desktop had the Offline Folders symbol on it. If I turn off Offline Folders with a GPO will Folder Redirection still work? Thanks

Hi there, I'd be really grateful if someone could have a quick read of my problem! My Exchange server is causing problems. 2-3 times a day, all outgoing emails are bouncing with SMTP errors - Example: There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <exchange.xxxx.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 <emailaddress@gmail.com>... Relaying denied> I am on a BT Business ADSL line and using a standard BT SMTP server which has always worked fine. I've checked at BT and it's working fine too. Rebooting my Exchange server resolves the problem but only for a few hours. Incidentall…

Print Confirmation Popup
by Guest Ian McCulloch- 10 replies

Hi all I am sure the bulk of the questions behind this topic are concerned with how to turn it off. But we print over a WAN and I need to ensure the successful print popup window appears for users who print to remote printers in other geographical locations. 1. I use HP printers everywhere with internal jet direct cards. 2. On both my Windows print server and the advanced print properties on each terminal server i have the following set under print properties>advanced tab: "Show informational notifications for network printers" and "Notify when remote documents are printed" Is there any other setting that could override these settings? Are the …

The Quickbooks database server on SBS
by Guest Tom Del Rosso- 10 replies
The Quickbooks database server apparently needs an admin to stay logged in while it runs. I'm wondering if you can make it run as a service or in a startup script. The fact that it also closes when you close it instead of minimizing to the tray makes it look pretty lame. What's the trick to make it work, or do you chuck it and let a workstation control access to the shared file? It seems to be designed to search for QBW files on a whole drive instead of simply remembering the folder you select. Are users supposed to open the file as before and rely on the manager to act transparently? This mechanism is strange for a database server. Does it hook file acce…

Server 2008: Shared or concurrent remote desktop access
by Guest Tech_vs_Life- 10 replies
I see that the -console tag has no effect any more, with Server 2008. Is there any way at all with Windows Server 2008's remote desktop (or other bundled program) to get a shared session, i.e. for the remote user and the local user to both be able to see and share the same session? (as with most "remote control" programs, like pcanywhere). If not, what remote programs are compatible with Server 2008. thanks.

Hi, I set up several custom papersizes. These papersizes are used to choose the correct papertray of the printer. Unfortunatly the printer ignores them if their ID is greater than 128. Tried to delete some older papersizes but the id is always incremented. So how can I change the papersize-id? Many Thanks Christian

vbscript problem removing and mapping network drive
by Guest Usenet- 10 replies
I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to move our logon scripts over from a mix of batch files and kixtart to vbscript. So far so good, except I have an issue with getting the script to map network drives reliably. In our environment let's say everyone has to have "r" drive mapped to \\server\share. Then depending which department a user is in they need a set of drives mapping for that department. So I have the following (not the whole script, modified to post the relevant bits): Dim objADSysInfo, WshShell, WshNetwork Set objADSysInfo = CreateObject("ADSystemInfo") Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set WshNetwork = WScr…

boot.ini file missing - how do I recreate it?
by Guest David B- 10 replies
When investigating our inability to boot from a mirrored system volume, it came to light that our Server 2003 system did not have a boot.ini file. Going through Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings, I am being given the option of writing a boot.ini file, but fear it is beyond my abilities. Is this a very complex file, or can I realistically create one - any advice would be gratefully received!
