Executing this script on a 2003 server results in an error claiming that the syntax is incorrect. What am I missing here? This script works perfectly on an XP machine. -- script begins -- c: cd "c:\shared\RE Photos" if not exist thumbs.db GOTO main attrib -s -h thumbs.db del thumbs.db :main if not exist #Numbered GOTO error_missing_dir if exist 0*.* move 0*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 1*.* move 1*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 2*.* move 2*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 3*.* move 3*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 4*.* move 4*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 5*.* move 5*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 6*.* move 6*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 7*.* move 7*.* #Numbered /Y if exist 8*.* m…

hi all, it has been difficult finding any info or guides on how to set up my server for game hosting, so i hope someone here can help! Let me start out by saying the hardware and bandwidth are more than adequate to run a dedicated server here. I am running windows server 2003 enterprise edition x64, and i would like to know what role to run for a server that will be used only for hosting a dedicated gaming server, and any management or setup tweaks, bandwidth and security tips would also be helpful, i dont need game specific help, i have that covered , the server can run the dedicated mode now, but i have not really finished setting it up properly, just ou…

Hi, For SQL Server, a fellow has suggested to use File Allocation Unit of size 64KB and the sector size should be 4KB. I am able to format a new hard disk and assign a file allocation unit size of 64KB. On the other hand, is there any way for us to change the sector size and what is the default value for a Windows 2003 Server ? Thanks Peter

That's it.. just looking to see if anyone knows how to tell when a particular computer was joined to a domain. I have a computer that was joined to a domain probably close to 9 months ago, but now I need to verify exactly when. Oh, I need to do this on the server - I don't have access to the computer that joined the domain to verify this info. Thanks in advance!

Is it possible to move the windows updated files or other files in the c:\windows directory to another partition? A new customer purchased a server from Dell with a 12 GB primary partition. Now they have 2GB free, over 7 GB is the c:windows directory. The other big directory is c:\documents and settings. BTW they are running Windows 2003 sp2 with AD and Exchange 2003. w2k3/IIS6 query on FTP logins?
by Guest JVRudnick- 2 replies
Learning here how to use windows Explorer to ftp data to our server, instead of using our FTP software. Seems pretty easy to do, but I've a question. w2k3 is supposed to allow you to both isolate or not, the user from all the folders in the vhosts folder, as I understand it. In setting up a simple FTP, I just used the Wizard and it ran fine...but I did note that when I tried to use same, I was asked for the id/pw and I had them for one of the sites on the server....but that made me wonder. When I'm using RDC on the server and settting up a new FTP service there, for a client whom I want to be isolated, I did NOT see anyway to create id/pw for them. …

Server 2003 - Best Software To Make Drive Image?

I am supporting someone who just installed Sever 2003 and is running a custom program that took quite a number of hours at a high billing rate to 'tweak' so the user wants an image done of the server's boot drive. I looked at Norton Ghost and it does not support Server 2003. We want to make an image file that will store on DVD DL Can anyone recommend a program that you have made image files and restored them on Server 2003? TIA

newbie question
by Guest Fitz- 5 replies

I am just learning about server 2003, and have a few questions that don't seem to be addressed in books. 1. When do I need to have the server in a domain and not a workgroup. I only need to network 5 computers and was told that using a workgroup is much easier. 2. If I use a workgroup and not a domain or active directory, then do I need to install DNS. 3. Why or when would I want or need to go more advance and use a domain, AD and DNS? Thanks, Fitz

Problem with Hyper-V, NCQ SATA drives; Event ID 129 from nvstor64 saying "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued". This post is related to the one on 5 Jun 2008, but I think I asked the wrong question in that one! The operating system is Windows Server 2008 RTM with the RTM version of the Hyper-V role installed (Windows6.0-KB950050-x64.msu). The computer is a custom built with an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, which has the NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI chipset. This computer has three SATA drives - two ST3320620AS and one ST3500320AS. The ST3500320AS has two partitions, one of which is the Windows "System" and "Boot" partition (hosts the operating system)…

I've come across an odd issue when trying to publish IAS in AD. I've tried three methods of doing it. 1) Via IAS MMC Snap-In. I receive the error: IAS Error: The task was not completed. You may not have sufficient privileges in the xxx.dom domain to perform this task. Please make sure that you have appropriate privileges inthe domain to perform this task or check with Network Admin. 2) Via AD Users & Computers, adding the server to the 'RAS and IAS Servers' group. I get the following error: The following Active Directory error occurred. The requested object has a non-unique identifier and cannot be retrieved. 3) Via netsh, and I receive the follo…

Help! I tried installing Windows Server 2003 and each time I get the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 logo and the little status bar moving from left to right and that's when I get a stop error, or the system hangs. I tried the installation about 20 times so far with same result. I ran full diagnostics from the utility partition and no errors were reported on any hardware. During the server installations I tried the following so far: 1) Swapped out memory, hard drives, SCSI back plane. 2) Updated PERC & BIOS firmware. 3) Tried installing with the PERC and also tried installing using the onboard SCSI conroller. 4) Installed using server as…

Survey: what do you use to create Login scripts
by Guest JohnB- 13 replies

I have been, in various forms and titles, working in the network administration field for some 20 years now. But with my previous employer, I did much less of that and, more on the project management side of things. Well now after having been "right-sized" I am looking at getting into network admin again. In the past I always used traditional batch files for login scripts. And now I'm wondering if this is still the preferred method. I have done some VB scripting in the past, but always thought you ended up with many more lines of code with that method. I know there are some other options our there like kixtart, but I have only "played" with those, n…

I found this batch file on a newsgroup a while back, I'm trying to get a text file that shows all the users I have in my domain groups. It keeps on giving me a message of something like "group not found" (I'm not near a dc to give the exact error) I noted the line numbers in this string. Any ideas how to make this work ? Line 1@echo off Line 2 if exist c:\Groups.txt del c:\Groups.txt Line 3 for /F "tokens=*" %%* in ('net localgroup ^| find "*"') do call :Sub %%* Line 4 for /F "tokens=*" %%* in ('net groups /domain ^| find "*"') do call :Sub %%* Line 5 goto :eof Line 6 :sub Line 7 set name=%* Line 8 net group "%name:~1%" | find /i /v "comment" | fin…

Removing a Server From Windows 2000 Domain
by Guest Ann- 5 replies
You'll have to bear with me....I'm very new to the Windows world. My predecessor built a Windows 2000 server domain (mostly to play with) quite a few years ago and made it a DC. He had one server join the domain just as a member server. I now have the need to get rid of the DC but I still need to keep the member server. To remove the member server is it just as simple as moving it to a Workgroup and rebooting it until we get the other domain up and running? We don't have AD running or anything, any time we log into that server we just log in locally. I just want to be sure the member server will be ok once I remove it from the domain or there are a…

PDC - BDC Conflicts
by Guest Jean Paul Mertens- 15 replies

Hello to all, I have a problem with a BDC (windows 2000 server) who does not see that the PDC (SBS 2000) is back on-line. I have got my PDC crashed, and for some reason the NT-Mirror had stopped some time ago. I have taken the PDC out of the network, and the BDC took over the security with no problem. I have put my (early stopped) mirror disk as master and restored alle backups so that the PDC is ok. I have put the PDC back in the network and had to disconnect (temporary set them to workgroup) all workstations and servers from the domain and then reconnect them to the domain. So far so good until I tried to do the same with my BDC but he keeps saying th…

Access denied on a particular file

Hi, I'm running a Win2003 R2 server with AD (at home for file sharing); yesterday i decided to do a backup by just copying the D: drive onto a 1 TB external drive. On one file it gave "Access denied" error and so far I can't find a way to get rid of it: 1. I'm running as a user with admin rights, but still i changed ownership of the file to myself - didnt help; 2. I checked if file is locked by a process (which would be weird as this file is not used - it's a part of an old archive) - none. 3. I ran couple of different antiviruses overnight - none 4. Ran chkdsk - didn't find any problems I need to note that problem exists if i try to do anything with…
