2008 Server x64 Print Server Driver Support?
by Guest Usenet- 0 replies

I"m struggling to find a simple guide to what is required in terms of printer drivers if I wanted to have a Windows 2008 Server x64 act as a file and print server. My understanding is that the driver installed on the server *has* to be a Vista compatible WHQL x64 driver i.e. I couldn't use a Windows 2003 Server x64 driver regardless of whether it's WHQL or not? It's one of those small things that could put a seriously big dent in any plans to pilot 2008 server as we all know how far behind many printer manufacturers are in updating their drivers. Our clients are primarily 32 bit XP and Vista with some x64 XP. I'm reading the Microsoft Windows 2008 …

2008 server: repair boot environment - how?
by Guest Alwin- 6 replies

Hi all, I admit, I messed up a quite important server. Originally it was Windows 2008, for some testing / cloned its system partition (Norton Ghost) and installed Windows 2003. Some time later I restored Windws 2008 over 2003, and since then the server does not boot any more. Strange: if I insert any OS CD (tried some: 2003 Server, 2000 Server, even XP ...) and boot, the server boots the CD, displays the normal "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt, and if I do *not* press any key it will after some time skip the CD boot and - boot Windows 2008 server from the Harddisk. I'd prefer it to boot without the helping CD, of course :-) Questions: * wha…

2008 server>>setting permissions stops, freezes
by Guest Mike Bonvie- 0 replies

I have a folder (w/around 30 subfolders) which I need to add a user to & give full access to. On the root folder, I go to: properties\security\advanced\edit\add - add the account, check full control, apply it displays the progress of setting the permissions for around 30 seconds, some of the files have no spaces, spaces under_scores in the file name...then all of a sudden it stops - usually on a file with spaces in the name..BUT, looking at the progress before it freezes, it sets the permissions on several files with spaces in its name How can I get past this & have the permissions apply to all? any ideas would be appreciated! 2008 Terminal Server Licensing
by Guest Chris- 1 reply
I am bringing up my first 2008 terminal server. When I install terminal services it says that I need to connect to my license server. My 2003 License server is a Win 2003 Domain Controller. All my Terminal Services CALS were purchased with Software Assurance, so they will not need to be replaced with 2008. Will my 2008 Terminal server, recognize these Terminal Servers CALS on this License server? Will I need to install a 2008 License server? Will I need to contact Microsoft to get the MTS CALs installed on the 2008 license server (If one is needed)? Is there anything else that it sounds like I am missing? Thanks Chris -- ccoates

2008 to 2003 Downgrade
by Guest chaswood- 3 replies

A client of mine needs more memory on his server for an application using a large graphics database. He was told by a Microsoft representative that he could purchase Server 2008 and downgrade to 2003 in order to get the larger memory support (16 GB is desired). All the Microsoft tables that I can find show that Server 2008 Standard can be downgraded to a Server 2003 Standard license, but 2003 Standard supports maximum 4 GB (even 64-bit 2003). He has a Dell Poweredge 2900 with 64 bit Xeon dual core that can handle it with no problem. Does anyone know of a workable solution without going to the Enterprise edition? Thanks in advance! -- IT Consul…

255 character path
by Guest mich- 1 reply

With the 255 character path plus file name limit is there any plug in or software that will allow a network admin. to search for all files that violate the limit? The server will allow you to create a file that violates the limit, but then you cannot rename the file, or access it without renaming the above folders to a shorter name to get under the limit. I'd like to smoke out all of these violations and address them at once instead of stumbling across them one at a time. I have made the users aware of the limit, but we all know that doesn't stop them from doing it again and again. Thanks!

255 characters for subdirectories
by Guest Boe- 1 reply
Hello, I noticed with subfolders, if you exceeded a certain length you couldn't copy them to other folders. e.g. shared\main clients\sales projects\year 2006 sales projects\..... Now I know my clients should be more succinct when naming folders but I don't sit over their shoulders all day watching them create subfolders. Is there a way to do anything about the limitations? If I do relax the limitations will I have problems with the workstations? Thanks PS our workstations are all XP and our servers are all 2003.

2k WINS and DHCP on NT domain?
by Guest flyersix- 1 reply
I have an old network still running NT for domain controllers. I am planning an upgrade this summer to 2k3. My question is can I move the WINS and DHCP services from one of my old NT servers to one of my 2k member servers? I am trying to get the old NT domain controllers to the point where all they are doing is user management. That will hopefully make it easier to remove them once this summers upgrade is done. Thanks for any help.

2k3 adprep in 2000 Domain
by Guest John- 2 replies
Hello all: We currently have two 2000 Server boxes and will be getting a 2003 x64 soon. I understand that to join the new box to the domain I will need to run adprep. However, is it sufficient to run the adprep from the 32-bit media, as the adprep available o the the x64 CD will obviously only run on a 64-bit machine/OS. The only guide I could find implied that what was necessary for the joining of this new computer is to run adprep /forestprep then adprep /domainprep. Is this all that is necessary? Are there any better how tos on this issue? Thanks.

2k3 server in NT4 domain
by Guest mwheat- 1 reply

We have a manufacturing facility that needs to stay running for another 6 to 12 months so upgrading and new hardware is going to be a hard sell with management. There is an NT4 domain that contains a 2003 server and about 15 XP Pro workstations. The 2k3 server keeps losing it's ability to authenticate to the NT4 DCs. The server gets rebooted and works well for another day or two. But will then start to have problems authenticating users for SQL from the NT4 domain. There are local DNS servers, but no active WINS. There is a 2003 AD domain for other functions in the facility, but those systems are unaffected. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

2nd Request: Repairing IE6, Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
by Guest Bob Felton- 2 replies
Original Post: Thu, 06 Sep 2007 22:41:13 -0700 After building up a "2003" server, I updated IE to V7 via Windows Update. However, I found an application (McAfee update "puller") that did not work properly using IE7, so I uninstalled IE7 to revert back to IE6. Now, the offending application works OK but IE6 isn't working well otherwise. For instance, I can't use it to administer my Linksys router or any other device that has a web interface for administration. IE6 on the previous Windows 2000 Server machine worked OK to administer those devices. What is the procedure for repairing or re-installing IE6 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 (installed as such fro…

3 Routers, Two Subnet and Two Internet Connection
by Guest addygill@hotmail.com- 5 replies

Hi, We have two subnets linked together and two seperate routers that pipe out to the Internet, with another router joining the two subnets together. We need one subnet to use one Internet connection and the other subnet to use the other Internet connection. At the moment, it is set up as follows: Internet Connection (External IP) -> Router A (192.168.0.31) -> Subnet A -> Router B (Subnet A,192.168.0.42), (Subnet B, 192.168.1.1) -> Subnet B -> Router C (192.168.1.31) -> Internet Connection (External IP) I've managed to set it up so Subnet A and B can talk to each other, and one of the subnet can get out onto their Internet, but I'm unable …

30 seconds to change the attributes of a file

Server 2003: In a directory completely devoid of all files except for the hidden thumbs.db (ranging in size from 8Mb to 40Mb), while working on the local machine the command attrib -s -h *.db Takes 20-30 seconds to execute. Why would this be taking so long? No errors in the event log directly related to this, and the various disk health scans I have run always report no errors.

32 bit & 64 Bit memory management
by Guest Artificer- 6 replies

I have several questions on the subject of 32 bit & 64 Bit memory management. If anybody can help me with one or more of these questions I will appreciate it. 1.Is true that a server running a 32 bit OS and 4GB of RAM will only report a little more than 3GB because of the addressing limitation of the 32 bit platform? 2.Is possible to install windows server 64 bit edition on 32 bit computer? Is there any benefit in that? 3.Is possible to install windows server 32 bit edition on 64 bit computer? Is there any benefit in that? 4.The Intel core 2 is a 32 or 64 bit architecture? I had read an article saying that it use a x86-64 instruction set so I am con…

32 bit print drivers keep updating on every printer access
by Guest Brad Overstreet- 4 replies
We recently installed a 64 bit file and print cluster. On the print spooler I have both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for each printer loaded. On all of my 32 bit clients (XP SP2), they download drivers causing Event ID 20 to be logged each and every time they access a printer. I have also noticed that if I am looking at the properties for printer A that it will download drivers for printer A, B and C. This is causing quite a bit of lag when accessing the printers and is particularly noticable for our wireless network users. Does anyone have any idea where to begin looking for an answer to this? I have seen several items posted on the web for this but no…

32-bit or 64-bit on Quad Xeon 2 GB RAM
by Guest Jon-Alfred Smith- 9 replies

Will mainly be used for investigating / learning / upgrading certifications to Windows 2008 with AD and SQL Server 2005 / 2008 on my home network. Should I go for 64-bit or 32-bit? Have no experience with 64-bit. Does it require the double of RAM for nearly all operations? Will upgrade to 4 GB RAM by Christmas. Thanks in advance! jas
