Server Performance
by Guest Redleg6- 5 replies

We have a client-server application that we are having perfomance problems on. The server runs a very complex medical archiving application that is accessed by clients. The server runs Win2003 R2, the clients are a mixture of XP and 2000. Occassionally the server's avg disk queue length will increase suddenly and stay high (100+) for 15-20 seconds, drop down and then repeat again. When it is high the performance on the workstations suffers significantly. When the avg disk queue length increases pages\sec increases only a little. What could be our problem?

How much RAM Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition can use ?
by Guest Peter- 9 replies
Hi, If we have 3GB of RAM in a Windows 2003 Server, we would like to know would it be possible for us to make use all of them or we have to add switches like /3G in the Boot.ini ? If it is the truth, we have to add this switch in some of our servers. This is because a fellow has mentioned that by default, Kernel and Operating System uses 2GB of that XGB of RAM. Regards, Peter

Windows 2008 Print Server
by Guest LilDeb- 5 replies
Hi There, I hope I am posting this to the right board.... We are slowly starting to introduce Server 2008 into our environment. One of the projects I have been assigned, is to decommission our Print Serve Appliances, and migrate them over to the 2008 environment. I have done some reading on this and know that I can assign the print server role, manually add the printers or have them automatically discovered, create the shares, update the drivers, etc….. My question is this: How many printers can one server manage? We are not a large environment, and have approximately 160 servers. Currently we have 4 print serve devices that are divided based on flo…

Windows 2003 R2 - Missing Disk Space on System drive
by Guest zinger-uk- 12 replies

Hi, We have a problem on one of our Domain Controllers which is running windows 2003 R2 server (SP2) The server almost ran out of disk space I have managed to free up enough disk space to give us some breathing room, but the MAJOR problem we have is Windows Explorer is reporting that there is only 602MB free on the 8GB System © drive. But if you run chkdsk it reports that 4314608 KB is available (i.e. 4GB of space) Does anyone know how we can get the windows to recognise that we have 4GB of free space and not 602MB If we do a dir /a /s it reports that 4,029,885,992 bytes are used and that 631,287,808 bytes are free The drive is formatted w…

Reset Recovery console password
by Guest Jeff- 11 replies

Hello everyone, I'm trying to reset the password for just the recovery console of an application server. This server is on an Active Directory network but is not a domain controller and is a 2003 SP2 server. I found articles/info about setting the Directory Services Restore password, but nothing on resetting the local administrator password. The local admin listed on the machine in Local Users and Groupds is the domain administrator account, but not the local administrator. I had an issue with a corrupted system file or registry hive and wasn't able to log on to the recovery console using the domain admin password or the old local admin password t…

Win2003 SBS - Can't Sop Services
by Guest Chris- 12 replies

Using Win 2003 Small Business Server with 14 clients. When logged on to the server box as the admin, I cannot stop/restart services. Each time I try, it appears that it works (I get the messages "Stopping Service..." and the progress bar, but it then fails sto stop the service. I searched on-line but couldn't find any reference to this behavior. Is this a known issue with Win2003 SBS ? I thought that logged on as the Admin, I should be able to do that. Do I have to do something special to gain that privilege? Chris... -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

Hi, I was wondering, if I take regular snapshots of my system drive (C:), and, say, a system file becomes corrupted and Windows Server does not boot, if there is any way to restore a snapshot? Maybe by doing a temporary install of Windows Server into a separate directory, or some other way? Thanks, Dimitri

Question about mapping a shared folder
by Guest Marc S- 20 replies
When sharing a folder on a Windows 2003 Server, does the location of the actual folder matter? For example: If the folder called "data" is located on Server named DRSERVER on D:\Disaster Recovery Store\new\Data and has a "shared name" of "Data". So the actual folder is 3 levels down. Then would the mapped drive be just \\DRSERVER\Data ? (1) Does Windows just know to look at a root level to see all "shared folders"? (2) No matter where the folder is actually located, the UNC would always be \\servername\shared folder? Is there documentation on this anywhere? Thanks.

storport.sys problem after SP2
by Guest Jonathan Eshel- 9 replies

Hello, I have a problem with access to SAN drives after applying SP2 to Windows 2003 Enterprise. The HBA is an Emulex LP982 with a storport driver. After applying SP2 the server lost access to 3 out of the 4 disk drives assigned to it. Further tests revealed that LUNs translated to 7 or lower are still accessible, and only 8 and higher are no longer accessible. I am prettry sure the problem lies with the storport.sys Microsoft driver, as I tried to copy the older version (I know - not a good practice - only for troubleshooting purposes) of the file over the SP2 (and hotfix - see below) version and everything was back to normal. Moreover, I found there …

Remote backup server for disaster recovery
by Guest GerryA- 8 replies

I need some advice regarding a project to create a remote server that users can access in the event of a disaster that causes access to the main server to be unavailable. The scenario is that in the event of a pending disaster some employees will relocate and access the main server/office remotely. If this remote access becomes affected by the disaster then the users will switch to the alternate server in a remote location. I am looking for advice as to how best to configure the remote server, do i add it to the existing Domain and then restore the data to it? My current train of though is that the servers will not be linked after the original configurat…

Installing RIS on Windows Sever 2003
by Guest justin2312@gmail.com- 10 replies

I've read a few how-to docs on installing Remote Installation Service (RIS) on Windows Server 2003; they all seem to say go to Add/Remove Programs> Windows Components and select "Remote Installation Service". I looked on my server, however, and the option isn't listed there at all. I'm sure the server is Windows Server 2003 SP1, is there any reason why the feature would be absent?

Files moving on their own
by Guest B~- 7 replies

I have a problem with a few users where they will try to move or delete files in their share folder and they keep coming back or will move back to the origional folder whenever the user reboots or logs back on to the server. We are running Windows 2003 R2 Small Business Server with syncronized files. The users "My Documents" are mapped to their user drive. I have tried turning off the syncronized files, that did not work. I tried moving the files from the server itself, and when the user logs in, the files are back in the origional position. This is only going on with 2 users at this time and then I have another user that whenever he is off line and w…

VSS not working correctly on 2003?
by Guest Jerome- 10 replies
Hi, I've enabled the Volume Shadow Copy Service on my Windows 2003 servers and I've scheduled them to make copies every day but they don't do them!? If I click on previous versions I only get the first day I've installed the VSS as an option to restore from (and yes, this file has changed a few times over the last days!). On the other hand if I MANUALLY click 'create now' in the Shadow Copies panel on my server then it makes a shadow copy and this is also reflected in the 'previous versions' on my client PCs. Any ideas why it's not making the copies according to the schedule?? Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot! Jerome

Hello I have a windows server 2003 basic edition. On this server I installed an apache web server, and I run a web application. The language scripting used is php. The web application is based on a few pages that call executable applications written in c#. This c# applications make operations on the windows media services, and doing stuff like create/remove publishing points (for those who know what this mean). The web pages, a few of them, are written in a way that they MUST get the response from the c# application, regarding the success or failure of the operation they had to make. To call an executable exe file from the php language script, you use a…

Printing from a PC outside domain
by Guest JohnBates- 14 replies

I have a situation where we have 3 production stations that all have their own domains and on each there is a Printer attached to one of the PC's and shared. I have 1 mobile station that has a single PC on it that is used by each of the 3 prodution stations as needed. It is a stand alone workstation not joined to any of the 3 domains but... They occasionally need to print from the mobile station which has no printer of it's own. Is it possible to print from a computer that is not part of a domain to a printer that is part of a domain? If it helps - all 3 of the production stations are clones of each other including IP schemes. The mobile station has…

Web Site Mystery
by Guest TheScullster- 11 replies

Hi all Not sure this is the correct group but here goes........... Although we have our own corporate domain europacrown.com, we do not host our own web site at this location. Instead, our parent company hosts our site along with their own. So in our DNS setup, there is a pointer to the ip address of the host server. For some reason, attempts to access our company web site http://www.europacrown.com don't work from our corporate network. I have tried the same from a dial-up connection without any problems. Although it is not clear how long this has been an issue, we recently promoted our a SQL server to act as a domain controller and active directory …

Do I need defragment on server running RAID 5?
by Guest Bobson- 7 replies

Hi everyone, I would like to ask if I need to run the defragment on a server running RAID 5 (hardware)? If so, have anyone tried the 3rd party like Diskkeeper? Any comments? Also, no matter what I used to defragment, would that mess up the Shadow Copy on the data or the config on the server? I just read thru some posts here so I ask this one. Thank you very much in advance for your help! Bobson

After installing win2k3 sp2 on win2k3 server which had no prior sp1, update to dot.net framework 3.0 hung and I had to power down/restart server. In normal boot, it hangs at spash screen; in safe mode, it hangs at acpitabl.dat. What can I do to fix without having to rebuild the server? We are running win2k3 on a HP Proliant ML150 G2 with win2k3 mirrored 80G SATA drives.
