How to manually create a custom event log in *any* category?
by Guest future2Bunknown- 1 reply
I am testing monitoring software therefore need the ability to generate event logs. Please note that I want to generate all possible event ID's from all possible sources. There are a few tools or APIs that let you create event logs - with certain limitations - e.g. only in Application Log, or only from undefined sources, etc. So answers such as logevent, eventcreate, won't be accepted.

Connecting to a server by name
by Guest Jasper Recto- 2 replies

I have a Cisco ASA firewall that allows me to VPN into our company domain. When I'm in the domain, I can ping any computer or connect to it through terminal server by using the computer IP address. Is there anything I can do so that I can connect to computer by its computer name? If I try to ping a computer name, the DNS can not resolve it. Is there a host file I can edit that can reference the computer name and it's corresponding IP address? I'm on Windows XP. Thanks, Jasper

All services on Windows Server 2003 box suddenly hang or stop
by Guest Chris Benton- 0 replies

I'm running Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition SP1 on an HP ProLiant DL380 server with 4 GB of RAM and an array of four 72GB hard drives. About two weeks ago, our server started randomly rebooting itself with the following message: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off.." etc. Shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. The specific error mentioned is: "Windows must now restart because the service services.svc terminated unexpectedly." Sometimes, the server does not actually reboot, but the services all abort, anyway. The only change to the server, apart from regular system updates, was the installation of Office 200…

by Guest Owen@7- 3 replies

We are running a 2000 sp 4 domain. Most machines have been promoted to 2003Server I still have 2 to promote then I will promote the domain. When users change their password (when it expires), users claim that they change the password, hit enter, and when they try to log back on, the new password does not work. What does work, is nothing or a blank password. Any suggestions?

Windows Activation Problem
by Guest Ole Weigelt- 4 replies

Hi everybody, I have changed my server's HD. It is running on Server2008 Now, my system tells me taht it has been deactivated due to HW change and I should reactivate. Reactivation results in error 0x004E003 which means that the key has been used previously. Of course it has! _I_ have used it before on the same machine. KB 931276 tells me to punch in the Key again, but I do not have that option. When I start slui.exe from the command line, it tries to activate, comes up with the error described above and that's it. Does that mean, I must not change HW without reinstalling and re-buying? Thanks for your time Ole

Backing Up - does anyone use 2 identical servers.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 5 replies

1 is the production and the 2nd. identical one is continually 'imaging' the 1st. I would think it would be at the hadware level. Maybe a card in each server connected via a cable. Production box goes down, the lan cable, any printers etc would be unplugged from it and plugged into the second and off we go. Or something like it. -- Regards Tom

BACKUP - cannot drill down to any files in BKF file.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 0 replies

W2003, C: drive only, did ASR backup on weekend. I wanted to test restoring a single file. Attached the USB External HDD, started up BACKUP, went to Restore... tab, right-clicked on the BKF file that is in the left pane, clicked Catalog. There is no '+' on the C: drive to drill-down. (yes there is a '+' on the 'Backup.bkp created date/time' file which expands to 3 items being C:, C:, System State) When I hover the mouse over one of the items above, a tick/check mark appears - I presume to allow selection of the whole of the item but no drill-down. -- Regards Tom
