Scheduled Tasks on Windows 2003
by Guest tolcis- 0 replies

Hi! We just build a new Windows 2003 SP2 server. We would like to allow one group to be able to go to Scheduled Tasks from their own computers via unc path: \\servername\Scheduled Tasks. What permissions should we assign to that group on that server (we don't have a specific GPO defined on AD)? We gave them rights as backup operators and they can see Scheduled Tasks share but when they double click on it they can't see any tasks underneath. T.

Power Users?

Hi There, I have a problem where I want to allow a more competant user to have local Administrator rights on computers in a specific OU, and to be able to join computers to the domain. I do not want him to be in the Domain Admins group, I do not want him to be able to access any servers. Is there an easy way to do this? His responsibilitys will be to install new desktops and join them to the domain. Obviously I could add him to the local administrators group on all of the PCs but to do this I would involve alot of hassle. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

simple networking question

Hopefully this isn't a "dumb" question. I'm setting up a lab at home to work on my 291 exam. I am running server 2003 on virtual pc installed on two different pcs. I need the two to be able to communicate. I attempted to use my liksys router and had them both hooked up to the router, using the same gateway. They were not able to communicate (ping). I don't believe its necessary to get out to the internet. Would I need to use a hub instead and plug them both into a small hub? Sorry if this is too easy of a question. Neither of the virtual pcs are set up as a DC.

Manage outside access to our web pages
by Guest Jordan- 2 replies

We are using W2003 to host a website and an FTP site. We have read access for everyone. We want to start putting things up on our web server for customers and vendors like vendor and customer literature, presentations, and so on. We want to do the following: 1. Give customers, reps, and vendors usernames and passwords. 2. Manage where those accounts can go. 3. Allow our internal Sales and Engineers to manage who has the access to what. 4. Have it be so easy that a sales person can run it. 5. Have it be something good enough that the engineers don't mess it up thinking they can improve it. 6. Preferably have somthing that straight forward access to w…

Logoff Script Running but not Applying

I have a weird problem with my logoff script that disables our proxy setting in IE. The script runs because the popup dialog is displayed at logoff but the proxy is enabled even when logging in outside of the domain. However if I manually run the script it removes the settings which remains unchecked when outside of the domain (as we would like to occur). Scipts below... LOGON SCRIPT CODE Option Explicit On Error Resume Next 'DECLARE VARAIBLES Dim objWshShell Set objWshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") '<<<<< PROXY >>>>>>> objWshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Interne…

Hello We have a domain based network and Windows XP Pro workstations and admins far away ... The normal workstation login is 1. ctrl-alt-del -> user name -> password -> domain name or 2. ctrl-alt-del -> doamin name\user name -> password When no network connection is availbale, sometimes mobile stations may fail to login with error "domanin not availbale", locking user out of their mobile workstation. What settings are required to set up on the mobile computer to log into Windows XP when domain isn't available? There doesn't seem to be any other choice in login dialog but to login to domain, even when no network connection is av…

Re: Virtual Server 2005 R2 can not access the Virtual CD/DVD Drive.

Re: Virtual Server 2005 R2 can not access the Virtual CD/DVD Drive. I have found the only way around a CD drive not being recognised is to use the VMRC Plus application available from MS to run VS 2005. The web management just would not work after the first install. VMRC Plus is a pretty handy tool anyway. http://www.mtechnical.co.uk -- sandiego ------------------------------------------------------------------------ sandiego's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=10779 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=744839 http://forums.techarena.in

Printing labels using a custom form; 2003, XP, Jet Direct.
by Guest Spacetrucker- 0 replies

Problem: A form feed between each label unless the printer is assigned as the default printer. We're printing labels. I created a new form on the print server, then created a logical printer and assigned the form to it using the default settings, not the print preferences. I'm using the standard method of searching AD for the printer then installing it on the users desktop. If I make it the default printer I have no problems. If I don't the user has to go to printing preferences and drill down and find the form and select it. Check me if I'm wrong here, but the way I understand Windows printing to work is that form should be pushed out to all the …

Shadow Copy not executing as scheduled
by Guest AParker83- 7 replies
Hello, We are having problems with our Shadow Copy service running as scheduled. Shadow Copy is configured to run every morning at 3am. The "Next Run Time" column indicates that it is scheduled, but when that time passes, the copy does not appear, and the "Next Run Time" increments to the next day. This problem started happening after we ran low on disk space on our OS partition. Shadow Copy actually quit running because of the lack of disk space. That has since been corrected, but this problem has popped up since. We've tried disabling Shadow Copies, then reenabling, and that does not help either. We're really at a loss here. Any suggest…

Defragmenting hard drives on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server
by Guest Zaur Bahramov- 3 replies

Hi! I've noticed that in the company where I've recently started to work in servers hard drives where never defragmented. Servers (windows 2003) are mounted on Vmware ESX Servers. I've tried to defragment hard drives using the windows defragmenter, but on some server, especially with huge files (over 100 Gb database files on partitions with about 200 Gb) some files where not defragmented. So, I'm now considering purchasing a third-party defragmenting utility for doing this. Does it worth investment or most would use the standard defragmenter? I like Diskeeper, besides, native windows defragmenter is a reduced part of Diskeeper. Does it worth inves…

Windows 2008. When users logon with RDP they always get the message that their profile did not load and that no changes they make will be saved. If I delete the profile and login to create it, I get the users profile folder created, but it's empty. I checked the security on the folder. Just the System, Administrator and the user have full control. Anyone have any idea why it's coming up empty? Is there some security/permission that I'm missing??? John

Hi there, I had problem connecting to my SBS2003 desktop using RWW. My SBS2003 (no ISA) has two nics, the ext_nic 192.168.1.52 connects to Netgear modem router, the int_nic 192.168.0.108 to the internal network. I open port 4125 in my router. However, I still cannot connect to my server desktop from any computer (remote computer, a workstation in the internal network, or even from the server using https://static_ip/remote, or https://192.168.1.52/remote. I tried http instead of https on an internal workstation and still doesn't work. I tried netstat -aon |find ".4125" and nothing returned. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? Daniel

policy question

Hello there, How can I check if there is a policy that removes the local admin privileges of the AD user that logs on to the AD domain? Some users might need local admin privileges for some applications to work properly. Also, can I enable some local computer policy on the user XP machine to override the above? I have an AD domain with multiple sites and OUs. Thanks, T

Can KB939928 be applied to R2-servers?
by Guest PN- 4 replies
Hello! On our "2003 R2 x86 SP2"-DHCP-servers we have a problem with tcpsvcs.exe eating private bytes and found useful information in article 939928, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939928. On our request for this hotfix we were adviced to use it even if we stated that we have R2. R2 is not mentioned in the articles "Applies To"-section and later we also found that the current version of dnsapi.dll is newer than the one supplied in the hotfix. Could this cause a problem? Current version: 5.2.3790.4238 Hotfix version: 5.2.3790.4116 Sincerely Peter Nilsson LTHALLAND

When using My Documents folder redirection to Users Home Directory on a Server 2003 R2 SP2 file server with disk quotas, items deleted from the user's My Documents folder are stored in the Recycler folder. This is causing a huge amount of content in those Recycler folders being counted toward users' disk quotas--which is unacceptable even if the default size is set to 1% since the file server volume is over 400GB. We know from experience that our users will not be disciplined enough to empty their recycle bins. Since we use VSS to provide previous versions of files, we may decide to use Group Policy to prevent deleted items from being sent to the Recycle …

CMOS (non-volatile harware) clock sycronisation
by Guest Brian McCauley- 3 replies

I have a number of Windows member servers in an AD forrest and in steady state w32time keeps there clocks approximately right (+-200ms). However when they are rebooted their clocks are (for a short time) all over the place (for 10-30 minutes) because, it would appear, that nothng is keeping the CMOS (non-volatile harware) clock in sycronisation with the Windows clock. On Linux I'd just create a cron job to do "clock -uw" periodically but I can't find any equivalent on Windows. Please note: I'm asking how to get Windows to keep the *CMOS* clock synced so that when servers are rebooted their clocks start out *approximately* right *before* w32time manages…

Entire Network missing machines?
by Guest Troy Bruder- 2 replies

Hello, Ok, probably a dumb question but i'll ask anyway. I have a small network, consisting of 4 subnets. In each subnet, there is a local Windows 2003 DNS/Wins/DHCP server. Clients in each site are configured via DHCP to point to the local DNS/WINS resolvers. The DNS/WINS servers are all DC's. DNS is replicated and so is WINS. DNS via AD replication and WINS via a hub/spoke replication partner setup. In each site, if I browse My Network Places | Entire Network, I only see machines local to that subnet instead of ALL machines on the network. What the heck am I missing!? Troy
