Filter Log Alerts in Event Viewer
by Guest Skadoodle- 0 replies
We are currently receiving multiple errors regarding "TermServDevices," Events 1106 and 1111 that are filling up the event log. These errors pertain to PDF Printers (QuickBooks PDF Printer) that are not installed on the Terminal Server for the clients connecting to it. We do not need to see these errors and I was wondering if there was any way to filter them out? We are running Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Terminal Server. Thank You, -- Skadoodle

KMS issue - Server 2008 kms key on Windows Server 2003?
by Guest Paul Coen- 1 reply

We've got a Microsoft Campus agreement, and I'm getting our KMS set up on a Windows 2003 R2 Server. Getting it running using our Vista KMS key was no problem, but I couldn't get any of the server keys listed on our license to work - all reported back as invalid when I tried to do slmgr /ipk <key>. The Vista KMS key entered with no issues and activated. Before I go down the route of calling the authorization center, I wanted to make sure that this actually ought to work - using the 1.1 KMS for Server 2008 activations on a Windows Server 2003 R2 (+ sp2) system that itself is using a current, valid VLK.

R2 File Resource Manager question..
by Guest jim- 0 replies

Can anyone point me to some kind of technet article or white paper that explains how the Win2k3 file resource manager determines duplicate files? I've got a pain in the a** user who insists on knowing the criteria Windows uses when it identifies two or more files as being duplicates. Thanks!

Hey everybody. In the past couple weeks, maybe a month, we've had a sudden outbreak of sharing violations, can't open/delete/save files, those types of issues on 2 Win2K file servers. The one server, I've replaced the RAM and NIC, also ran a full blown chkdsk on the volume that had issues, and still having issues. Now that the other server is having issues i'm thinking that maybe a recent MS or VirusScan update (the only 2 things similar on both servers) may have caused this. Anyone else having issues like this recently, or know what else I should be looking at to find out what's going on?

In my case the system was not rebooted automatically so you may have to do it manually wit a remote forced reboot. You can see more at: http://circulotito.blogspot.com/2008/06/windows-2003-x64-sp2-error-checking.html

Migrate File Shares
by Guest a_user- 4 replies
Hi All, Not sure if I would consider this a unique situation but its not as straight forward as I would like. Currently we have two file file servers servering over 9tb. Storage1 and storage2. Storage1 is on older hardware with windows 2000(about 3.5tb of shares). I am trying to migrate this data to storage2 on windows 2003. We do not currently use dfs but I am intending on implementing it slowly once I have completed this migration. My concern/issue is we have hundreds of shares on storage1 that obviously reference 'storage1' and unfortunately there are even some internal applications that are mapped to the unc path of storage1. This raises the …

A billion (software) RAID 5 questions
by Guest Andrew- 3 replies
For Windows 2003 and up. It is extremely difficult to find any detailed information about software RAID 5 on the Microsoft site. So far i've found about 5 different pages that tell me what a RAID 5 is but does not cover logical things, like how to manage them, in detail. For example, how can I add new disk into a RAID 5? What about best practices for RAID 5 recovery when failures occur. Any help would be much appreciated! Any books, links, anything!

VSS no workee!
by Guest Edwin Smith- 7 replies

About a week ago, I used Acronis Disk Director to resize the partitions on a Dell Perc Raid 5 system with SATA drives. This is in order to give more space to the C: system drive. Afterward I ran chkdsk /f on both volumes to correct errors. Now Backup Exec fails saying the VSS is already running when it isn't. If I click on the Shadow Copies tab in My Computer properties for each volume I get the following: Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies. Error 0x8004230F: The Shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. I also see the following event in the Application event viewer: …

Cscript from task scheduler
by Guest Juan García- 6 replies

I have a vbscript file (backup.vbs) that does some calculations and then call the ntbackup program with parameters. If I execute in the Start / Execute box the command "cscript backup.vbs" (or if I doubleclic the .vbs in the windows explorer) I can see the interface of the ntbackup program, the progress of the backup and when it ends the windows close. I would like to execute the script from the task scheduler. I add a new task and I write in the execute box "cscript backup.vbs" and I can see two important differences: 1.- The backup is completed and the bkf file created, but it happens in background. How can I see the ntbackup interface? I need the progre…

Event Logs

I need to search the security event log from a month ago but the log has been long over-written on the server. Assuming I have a full backup (including what backup exec calls "system state" is there a way to restore the log files without restoring the entire server (it is a domain controller).
