copy large file to USB drive hangs 1 2 3

When I copy large files to my USB drive, it hangs. I've done some checking and found there is a problem with Win2k that is fixed in SP2. But I'm already using SP4. Any idea what could be wrong ? I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've use the drive on a XP machine and I can copy large files. Thanks for your advice.

cannot delete empty folders - until 'later' 1 2

In other words you couldn't delete it until you logged off and back or or until you rebooted the machine? Something must have had an open handle on the folder. by Guest ms- 44 replies

I want to disable file/folder sharing, Thought it was done in TweakuI, but I don't see it. I searched, came up with data, says: ------ 1. First, right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties". My Network Places/Properties 2. Next, find your Network Card (probably labeled "Local Area Connection" or the name of the type of Ethernet adapter you have installed), right click on it, and select "Properties". Local Area Connection/Properties "Local Area Connection/Properties" ----- I don't have "My Network Places" to start this procedure. Not in My Computer. Also looked in Control Panel, Network Connections there either N…

Hot key needed 1 2
by Guest sherwindu- 39 replies

I enter my email address and password to several browsers multiple times a day. Is there some way to set up a 'hot' key that can be used in my Windows 2000 operating system to make that job easier? I generally use Internet Explorer and Netscape. Will these browsers recognize a hot key from the operating system?

Has anyone out there had success making Internet explorer 7 work on windows 2000? I know Microsoft says it won't work and so far I haven't been able to make it, but I know there has to be something hidden probably in the ie setup file that you can change to make it work on 2000. Thanks, JM

Need to delete unmanageable Badmail directory 1 2
by Guest Charles Lavin- 31 replies

Hi -- I'm trying to clean up an Exchange 2000/Win 2000 (SP4) machine prior to a migration. This server is massively bogged down and almost out of disk space. One of the biggest issues is an Exchange Badmail folder that has what are probably millions of files. It doesn't seem like the prior IT manager ever cleaned out this folder, and this machine bounces back a ton of spam a day. Any attempt to open Badmail from Explorer usually results in Explorer hanging. Actually, you won't even get that far -- opening up its parent folder usually hangs Explorer. I navigated to the Badmail folder from a command prompt. I let a dir call scroll for about 20 minut…

Some of my folders and files, including pst files were deleted. They are not in the recycling bin. I was installing a software shortly before that came from a trusted source. Later on it was discovered that the CD was corrupt. The first indication was that all of my e-mails were deleted along with personal folder (Microsoft outlook). -- Val

Transferring Win2000 to a new computer 1 2

My new HP computer came with Vista Home Premium. I don't like Vista and I want to install Win2k from my old machine instead. After 6 years I don't know where my win2k installation CD is, but the CD is copied to my old hard disk and I do have my serial number. I used the serial # when I had to reinstall win2k, and when I registered online at microsoft.com to get "automatic updates". I copied i386 from my old machine onto a USB flash drive and tried to install win2k from within Vista. I thought I would dual-boot for a while, but the boot loaders are conflicting and Vista is not allowing win2k to install. So I thought I would boot from floppy, fdisk the new machi…

At times, no browsing
by Guest ms- 24 replies
- 1.5k views
Normally my W2000/SP4 custom desktop runs fine. It was built with SP4 installed 3 years ago, no patches since then, daily browsing (DUN) with Firefox and Xnews newsreader since then, never *had* problems until about 6 weeks ago. I don't use MS software except for the OS, no commercial software, usually small noinstall freeware utilities, has always been very troublefree. 6 weeks ago, on daily cold boot, worked fine one day, installed nothing, don't use registry cleaners, etc. The next day, DUN was normal, Firefox opened normally, but it was not browsing. I disabled the firewall, no help, I checked seveal things, everything seemed normal. I changed…

Restore or turn on a registry key on C drive from a different harddrive
by Guest chevyavalanche- 24 replies

Here's the situation: I turned off a registry key that somehow disables my mouse and I can no longer use the drive as it boots up ok to the msconfig dialog box (the one that states you modified something) and then I can go no further. I can't tab or do anything at this point. The mouse is there on the screen but it doesn't move. I know the exact registry key that I need to turn back on but I just can't get to it. I've tried booting into safe mode and this doesn't work as my mouse doesn't work there and I've tried booting into last known good configuration and that doesn't work either. I've tried usb and ps2 mouses and neither move but they show up on the…

dueal boot - blue and white screen
by Guest aa- 23 replies

On ASUS notebook with Windows XP Home attempted to make it dual boot to install W2K. Before dong any changes I copied original ntldr (245K) and ntdetect.com(47K). With Partition Magic created an NTFS primary partition and installed W2K Pro which went smoothly, and W2K was running OK XP Home would not start at all because, as I seem to remember, ntldr(211K) and ntdetect.com(34K) generated by W2K would not load XP, -so I replaced them with the those of XP Home I copied earlier. Now after selecting XPHome it produces the screen suggesting several modes of loading XP Home, but whatever mode I select it just restarts the computer. I replaced ntldr and ntdetect.c…

4 CONSECUTIVE CORRUPT DISK DISASTERS WITH WIN2K
by Guest zeke7- 21 replies

Am consistently getting a corrupted C: drive on my desktop PC computer running Windows 2000 SP4 with latest updates, firewall/virus etc installed. At least 4 crashes / complete formats/reinstalls in as many weeks. Same standard hardware & software (other than the latest Windows Updates) as when it ran fine, for years; do have many new files for My Docs, however. Tried installing on different hard disks, do a slow NTFS format beforehand, etc. Recovery Console and Emergency Repair Disks have consistently been unsuccessful in salvaging the installations. A detailed description of SW/HW/processes would be overly long; the following is a summary in the h…

win2000 install problem
by Guest h.stroph- 20 replies

I was given a Toshiba Satellite 305CDS laptop with a 2GB disk and 32MB of memory that had a bunch of personal data on a win2000 installation, so I wiped the disk and tried to install my own licensed win2000 from CD after booting from the 4 boot floppies. At about 51% of files copied, it is unable to copy several dll files from the CD for some reason, even when I choose to skip a problem file. Is the 2GB disk too small? It formats cleanly with the NTFS filesystem and no errors, and the low-level formatter I used to wipe the disk also reported no errors. memtest86 shows no errors with any of the memory. What might be the problem with this win2000 install plea…

Product Key question
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 19 replies
- 943 views
I installed Windows 2000 on my laptop, which was just a test to see how it would run on a slow laptop. (I have both Win2K and Win98 installed). I just installed Win2K on a spare desktop computer using the same install CD. I gave the desktop a different username than the laptop, but used the same Product Code, since I intend to delete Win2k on that laptop (too slow). On the desktop, Win2K refused to accept the (SAME) product key I used on the laptop. I should mention that the laptop has NEVER been connected to the internet so that product code is not registered to MS. I carefully checked my typing and it was correct. I tried to re-enter it, but it would not…

2 Harddisk with the same drive letters
by Guest flahmeshess- 18 replies

I have 2 harddisk, 1 installed with Win2K and one with WinXP. Both have the same drive letters, C,D,E. The OS is installed on C. I would attached 1 drive at a time to start up the OS. I need to copy some files across (without using an external HDD). What would happen if I attached both the drives ? Would the OS be corrupted and then not be bootable ? Thanks.

W2K Bootup problem + slowed machine
by Guest Olin K. McDaniel- 18 replies

In recently downloading all headers from the past several months and then downloading selected posts, I found a couple that addressed a problem very similar to one I've now got. However, there didn't seem to be a genuine solution to their problems, so I'm reopening essentially the same subject and asking for help. I may have a few different and perhaps more useful observations to throw out this time. My system consists of an older CPU (Pentium III, 600 MHz), and a matching MB. For years now I've used it as a Dual Boot System, one being Windows 98 SE and the other being Windows 2000 Pro, with Service Pack 4. (For the record, W98SE is FAT 16, while Win2K is F…

Fiesta Recently I have been constantly getting the following IE6 error message: IEXPLORE.EXE-Application Error The instruction at 0x10003dfb "referenced memory at 0x006e0069". The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program Click on cancel to debug the program When this occurs I have the choice of either logging off or rebooting. Since I am not an expert in interpreting the debug messages, I can not locate the cause from that source. Can anyone help me. Thanks.

How to create a .prn file?
by Guest Sid Elbow- 17 replies
I'm trying to create a print file from a word document that I can send to a printer from the command line. I went to <Start> <Settings> <Printers>, opened the properties for the printer involved and set the printer port to "Print to a File". I then went through the print dialogue from Winword, gave it a filename and apparently created a print file. Unfortunately, whenever I do this I get a zero byte file. Am I missing something. (The reason I'm trying to do this is that I have a long-standing problem with inkjet printers in that, because my usage is relatively infrequent, when I do come to need the inkjet it's invariably got a dr…

virtual memory
by Guest Gordon Biggar- 17 replies

I write a lot of Word programs (Office 2000) in which I am inserting photos, etc. Of late, I am receiving virtual memory warnings, the system saying that I am low on virtual memory, and that it is going to have to increase same. My programs are not terminated, however. I have a 200 gig hard drive (C:) with 260 MB of RAM. There is 87% free space, and my Word files are only a few meg, or so, in size. Virtual memory on my C drive is set for 400-450 MB. I read in the HELP section that the pagefile.sys should preferably not be located on the same drive with other system files. Since I have another hard drive (E: 4 gig free), I set up a file on that drive (450…
