Copying a print file to a network computer.
by Guest Sid Elbow- 6 replies

I've been sending a print file (.prn) to a local, parallel-port printer by simply copying the file to LPT1 via a batch file. I now want to send the same file to a printer which is attached to the network via a print server. How can I do that in a batch file? The print-server has an IP of 192.168.0.110 and the printer is on port # 9101.

Unsigned driver ?
by Guest philo- 6 replies
I've recently setup a few machines with Win2k...then added additional hardware. At the time of installtion...the H/W was automatically detected and installed by Windows and there were no problems...but I did get that "unsigned driver" warning which I just ignored. Well that was a few weeks ago..but I just now realized that I had not downloaded any drivers nor used a driver CD... the H/W was picked up and installed by the OS ( I assume from the inf folder) so I was just curious as to why that warning appeared? The only thing I can possibly think of is that the OS was fully updated before adding the add'l H/W.

Server 2 RDP license now 1?
by Guest OldBored- 6 replies
I have noted that, not this week but some time in the recent past, Windows Server 2000 (all versions) seem to have lost a CAL for RDP. The server came with a 2 CAL license to administer the server, now all the 2000 servers I have to administer remotely only allow a single sign on. Anyone know why Microsoft took away this CAL? Any plan to give it back? Sometimes we need 2 people in there.

Process-dependent automatic opening of specific file in Word
by Guest Herbert Eppel- 6 replies

My Translation Memory software produces intermediate tab-delimited txt files, which I open in MS Word (and temporarily convert to a table via a macro) for reviewing purposes. I wonder if there is some (relatively straightforward?) way of implementing a procedure that would check whether txt export subprocess is finished and then open the exported txt file in MS Word (and run the conversion macro)? -- Herbert Eppel http://www.HETranslation.co.uk

No longer getting a "preview" of JPG images when viewing a Folder
by Guest scscompa- 6 replies
I have not been to these newsgroup/forum entries for years... Since Win 2000 Beta. Sorry, if I post this in the incorrect spot. Anyway - I have recently (yes, I still use Win 2000 Pro) had a couple of problems resulting from my installing latest Windows Update fixes. of two weeks ago I am not surprised with that -- I know how support of older systems can be a complicated matter -- and, in turn, I have resolved (with Microsoft's help) both of the key problems -- but, not this one: I no longer get a "preview" of a JPG when I single-click on the item when on folder-view. I can go through View->Customize folder and end up with a "fancy" preview (I ha…

by Guest jbclem- 6 replies

I'm trying to install Norton Antivirus Corporate edition and keep getting this error 1906: failed to cache package. According to Microsoft.com this is a problem with the Windows Installer and "This error usually occurs when 10 or more merge modules are used. " Also "This error is caused by reaching a limit associated with the total number of characters in the cabinet file names." Microsoft.com also states: " Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. " And they say "This problem was corrected in Windows 2000." Here's the funny thing...I'm using Windows 2000 SP4 and the problem is s…

PartitionMagic A.K.A. PartitionTragic
by Guest george-p- 6 replies

I had the very bad idea to install two OS's with the help of PartitionMagic on my Windows 2000. I copied my data to a 200GB SATA disk and partitioned the original 80GB disk SATA 2 x 40GB. After installing W2000 the nightmare started. I only have one OS installed (Windows 2000 Professional), however while booting it ask to select 1. Windows 2000 Professional and 2. Windows 2000 Professional!! Yes twice! Besides W2000 is terribly slow. I tried to delete the 80GB partitions and start all over again, but it doesn´t work. Still the PartitionMagic stuff remains in the disk. Still asks to select between W2K Pro and W2K Pro and the computer is slow as…

Windows 2000 SP4 installation problem
by Guest kevjp- 6 replies
I'm trying to install SP4 on a PC that has no Internet connection, and has Windows 2000 already installed (with no servicepacks). I've downloaded the network installation file on another PC and copied it to the 2000 PC and double clicked the w2ksp4.exe file. Then a very brief DOS window opens and quickly closes again, but nothing else. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

Updates integration in installation disk
by Guest kindwoulf- 6 replies

I'm trying to make an updated windows 2000 insatllation disk, with sp4 and all susequents. So I downloaded the needed files and integrated them into an installation folder, then burned it to a bootable cd. The disk boots fine, and i tried it twice; once with only sp4 then with some additional updates and both worked fine. But after few days i tried it with a fresh start, new copy of w2k cd then integrate sp4 then the additions. What happened is that the disk booted fine and while the setup is loading, every thing stops and the blue screen tells me that "cannot find mountmgr.sys" and the insatallation aborts. What keeps me wondering is that i done before, w…

by Guest el- 6 replies

Hi all, I am new to use group policy to deploy application to desktops or users. The application I used to try was Office Compatibility Pack 2007. I had tried several different ways to assign it to several desktops. The common works I had done for the different tries were: 1.. Created a new Deploy Application OU under MyDomainName domain in Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) 2.. Created a new MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007 OU under Deploy Application OU 3.. Created a new assign group policy called Assign to computers in Properties window of MS Office Compatibility Pack 2007 OU and have the MSI file and other settings entered I then use differen…

Windows Installer Error on W2K
by Guest George Schneider- 6 replies

Sorry for the repost. I orignaly posted this to the wrong newsgroup. During an application installation i'm receiving an error 1931. The Windows Installer service cannot update the system file C:\Winnt\system32\MSCPXL32.DLL becuase the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for the program to work correctly. How can I resolve this error during install? Apparently the application is trying to update this file and is being blocked from doing so? I checked rights and that sort of thing and everything seems normal to me. If I click ok the install finishes and everything appears to work correctly but I would really lik…

Can't Log On to Windows
by Guest Ushnell- 6 replies

Windows 2000 is treating me as if I am a thief that is trying to break into my own computer after I made a change to the Local Security Policy in the Management console. I don't know exactly what is causing the log on screen to say it can't log me on to the system but I think it's the "log on as system" setting I applied before restart that is causing this but why? any help to this problem will be appreciated. -- Ushnell Fenell

Hello, I really hope someone can help me out with the problem I am experiencing with my Windows 2000 Professional. I recently installed the free edition of AVG anti-virus. After updating the virus definitions it scanned my system and found many viruses which it then deleted, moved to the virus vault and cleaned. After re-starting windows it starts up as normal without any error messages or problems but after signing in at the logon screen it says "windows is starting" and then, after a few seconds, instead of starting, the message changes to "windows is saving your settings" and then it takes me back to the login screen as if I have logged off! …

Morning: I recently allowed the adobe updater to upgrade my reader... It didn't uninstall the Reader 9.0b.ocx file properly before loading the new version and now the registry is looking for that OCX file... I tried deleting the key that refers to it but Win 2K won't let me delete the invalid registry key... I asked Adobe and they sent me a utility to wipe the ocx files from the computer and then I reloaded the new reader from their website... It's still looking for the 9.0b ocx file... Help...

Newly installed programs won't let Windows boot.
by Guest monty1945@lycos.com- 6 replies

A friend of mine has a major problem. He has a conflict between two programs, EasyArmor firewall and FixIt utilities, and his computer can't start up. He can't even get it into safe mode, it just keeps restarting. He has a recovery CD from the manufacturer, but that doesn't work, unless he wipes his disk, and he has important data on the hard drive. He has no Win2000 startup disk and no 3.5 floppy drive. Any suggestions? TIA.

Logon Error from KB 824302
by Guest E-Double- 6 replies

A standalone Win2000 Pro/sp4 machine cannot be logged on to either in normal or safe mode as the error "The system cannot log you on now because the domain xxx is not available" as detailed in KB Article 824302. I contacted MS Support and they sent me two .EXE files that apparently fix the problem, but how are these fixes supposed to be run if the machine cannot be logged on to? The Readme.txt file just says to refer to the KB article - which does not really have instructions. I also tried booting to a CD but they would not run that way either. In addition I remotely edited the registry from another machine changing the WinLogonCache value to 0, as wel…
