shutdown, restart, logoff
by Guest Tony- 6 replies
shutdown, restart and logoff do not work if following this path: START - SHUTDOWN - REASTART, SHUTDOWN, LOGOFF CURRENT USER. It will shut down manually in about 2 seconds, but I know repeated "hard shutdowns" are not good for my PC. Installed is WIN2000 SP4 O.S. I was told it was prolly a setup in my BIOS , but I went through that yesterday and could not find a place for shutdown or restart. Any info will be helpful, the more detailed the better. Thanx, Tony L.

Drag/drop MS Word Doc Shortcut to Win2K Start Menu
by Guest Clueless in Seattle- 6 replies
I've set up a folder on my Win2K Start Menu where I would like to store shortcuts to my frequently used MS Word document files. The only way I know how to create shortcuts for my MS Word documents is to go into Windows Explorer, find the folder containing the document file, and drag the file to the Start Menu and drop its shortcut into the folder I've created there. That gets a bit tedious, having to wade through the Windows Explorer folder tree. What I'd like to be able to do is this: When I have a Word document file open in front of me and decide that I'd like to add it to my Start Menu folder, I could just just drag a shortcut directly from the open …

how to make (format) a system disk
by Guest jbclem- 6 replies
I want to put system files on a floppy disk. But going to a cmd prompt and typing format a:\ /s doesn't work because the format command is not recognized. Does Win2000 have a way to do this. I tried booting up into Dos to do this, but I still don't know where the appropriate format.exe file is so that didn't work either. I'm using FAT32 for a file system. Where can I find a format.exe that will work with this? John

Can't delete old documents
by Guest Barque- 6 replies
I have some old documents that are shown on my hard drive in te my documents folder. I keep getting messages that say I can't delete or move or rename the files (or move the folders they are in as they are missing or have been moved (I suppose to someplace they aren't). Anyway, even when signed on as an administrator they can't be touched. I even tried a new install of Windows 200 Pro, and updated to service pack 4 and the stupid files are still there! Even eliminating the user name and deleting all the files (other than those) in the user folder can't get rid of them. What next? Thanks

I have a windows 2000 server which I want to upgrade to windows 2003. I put in a window 2003 R2 CD 1 into the server. but then I get a message that windows 2000 cannot be upgraded to windows 2003 standard. Its a normal windows 2000 server not a windows 2000 advanced server. I put in a windows 2003 r2 enterprise CD and then I get an option to upgrade. Can you upgrade to windows 2003 standard?

Diagnosing Blue Screens & Re-boots

Hi Folks; I have an old Compaq DL380 G2 server that I'm using as my firewall. All it has on it is Windows 2000 Advanced Server & ISA Server 2004. It's worked well for years - never an issue. I manage it remotely via Terminal Services. Recently the server has been re-starting itself about once a week or so. This is done by the server management software (auto recovery). It checks the machine to ensure it's responding and if it doesn't get a reply for 5 minutes it forces a re-start of the system. Because this is a rack mount server I'm never in front of it to see it happen. In anticipation of it occurring again (it seems to happen once a week) - w…

Chkdsk: why does the C: always have minor inconsistencies?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 6 replies

Over the last week, I've run "chkdsk x: /f /v /r" on my C and D drives 5 or 6 times. The output of the chkdsk shows up in the Event Viewer Application Log as Winlogon events. I see that whenever I run chkdsk on my C drive, it ALWAYS has a line saying "Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive." The D drive never has that problem. Both the C and D drives are NTFS. This is on Windows 2000 SP4 with all the latest updates. So why is the C drive always getting into an inconsistent state, even within 24 hours of the previous chkdsk?

XP & Vista to 2000
by Guest Information- 6 replies

Due to budget limitations, I am working with the following: We have a Win2000 workstation (SP4) that houses a database program to be accessed through a shared folder to the remainder of our stations. Station 1 is an XP Home box (SP3), Station 2 is a Vista laptop (SP1). XP and Vista can see each other, but only the XP box has a printer shared. Vista can see that, and a temporary shared test folder, We removed the folder share after seeing it worked. Neither can access the shared folder on the 2000 box. Both XP and Vista firewalls are disabled, there is no Norton or McAfee installed, only AVG. I have added the user/passwords to the user list on the 2000 ma…

Sometimes my QL toolbar relocates from the bottom of the desktop to the right side. The online 'help' says to click on the divider line & drag it back. That worked the last time. Nothing works this time. There has to be a way to reset the default. Please advise how to end this frustration. Blithe

Install Avast as administrator, full functionality as power user?
by Guest AndyHancock- 6 replies
Is anyone aware of any issues with installing the Avast antivirus home edition as administrator, then mostly operating under a power user environment? I'm trying to get a heads-up on assumptions that may have gone into the design of the application e.g. assuming a single- account environment (basically admin), which may result in unexpected curtailment of functionality when Avast is installed as admin, but the PC is used under power user. Thanks.

by Guest ***** charles- 6 replies

Hi all, I removed a hd from a laptop that had Vista Basic on it. I connected the hd to an old clone that I have that has Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on it. The laptop hd is a SATA and I have a SATA card in the clone. The driver loaded just fine and I can see the two partitions on the laptop hd. Problem is I need to drill down into My Documents on the laptop hd to copy my documents off the thing. When I click on the My Documents directory I get F:\Documents and Settings is not accessable. Access is denied. I know there is stuff in there and that this is a permisions problem but how do I take ownership of the directory so I can read/copy the files I need? than…

Windows not seeing drive as DVD R/W
by Guest mcoffee41- 6 replies

I just put in a Sony DRU-710a DVD R/W as a master disc drive. Windows saw the drive and installed a basic CD-Rom driver for the device upon the first boot up. It will not see any DVD disc though, only regular cd's. Sony does not provide any drivers for it, so I'm not sure how to get Windows to see it as a DVD-Rom Drive. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

by Guest David Andrews- 6 replies

I just upgraded my Window 98 to Windows 2000 Pro on my PC and it is not shutting down correctly. It starts to shut down, I can hear the drives in the box wind down, then I get a blue screen with a responsive mouse pointer ???. CTRL_ALT_DELETE will do nothing, nor will the power button on the tower. I have to kill power to the the tower, press the button to reboot. Even If I start up in safe mode and then shut down I still have a problem. The Windows 98 on this system ran correct. I know, I know I'm behind the times..... Modem Trouble
by Guest W. Watson- 6 replies

I installed W2K on a P3, and then had to re-install it. Before I installed it the second time I was able to get a model S20 Sterling 56K FAX PCI modem up and running to dial out. After the second install (I reformatted the HD too, and added SP4 plus some security fixes, along with SP rollup 1), the device manager does not see the modem. I've installed the drivers. I see a yellow question mark around one of the PCI devices. Comments? Installing modems drives me crazy. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

Hope This Isn't OT
by Guest Dave Patrick- 6 replies

FYI; To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. (Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied W…
