Wheel mouse: scroll 1 line instead of 3?
by Guest Robbie Hatley- 5 replies
I'm running Windows 2000 and using a 2-buttons-&-wheel USB optical mouse. I'm noticing that in every program I've tried so far, the wheel causes text to scroll vertically in 3-line increments. I'd really prefer 1-line increments. Is there any way to change this globally, in Windows 2000 settings? Or is this a thing which is controlled by each individual program? (If the latter, I'm annoyed, because I have yet to see a program that offers user control over this.) -- Curious, Robbie Hatley lonewolf aatt well dott com www dott well dott com slant user slant lonewolf slant

IE6 in Win2k
by Guest orotun@d.EUS- 5 replies
My IE6 has just started playing up - I open an IE window and it'll behave like its partially loaded, but the status bar seems to take forever to change at almost 100% loaded, which stops browsing within the window (bookmarks, etc not responding). FF works fine, its not my homepage, which I've changed to other sites. There's no other connectivity problems. I've scanned my system for viruses with multiple virus scanners / malware programs, with nothing found. Have MS screwed something up with a recent update?

Recovery console, Update
by Guest Steph- 5 replies
Hiya! I fancied adding the "recovery console" to my boot options, just in case... Ran C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons : That did the job, but examining the files in the newly created hidden folder, C:\cmdcons , most of which compressed, revealed they are the original Windows 2000 version, whereas my running installation is now at service pack 4. Is there a need to have those files and the console itself updated ? And how would I update them ? Shouldn't the files under C:\i386 (reflecting the original CD) be updated too ? I visited Windows Update which did not seem to notice or care about this discrepancy. Thanks -- Steph (no working e-mai…

When I start up the computer, it says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Swetup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. Well, I don't have the original Setup CD-ROM. I was given this computer. I am able to boot to the Norton Ghost CD and have excess then to all the files and folders on the comp. How do I fix this? -- God Bless America! Scribe

Hi all, for the past week I cannot back up my system without the system freezing up. I have been using Disk Image 7 for several years with no problems but now it halts the system after a minute or two. I've tried running Norton Utililties, sfc /scannow, RegCleaner, and my antivirus with no change and there are no other problems with the system. I don't know if it is DI7 or Windows 2K but I get the following error message on the dreaded blue screen: Stop 0x000000B8 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) a wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DPC routine. I just finished installing Win2k w/SP4 (clean install on its own drive) and I cannot find IE6 on the Microsoft site. I tried to install TaxCut and it will not work with IE5 (for whatever reason) - and it directs me to get IE6 from Microsoft. Except, I cannot find it. Does anyone know if IE6 is still available? Thanks Gordon

NTFS Question - Windows 2000
by Guest Ryan- 5 replies

Hello, I recently bought a two new 500GB drives and have them hooked up to a Rosewill RAID card (RC-209) in RAID1. Windows 2000 sees a single 500GB drive and all is good. I created a new partition format the drive with 512 cluster size, and when finished I have working disk that show 180MB of used space in 3 files. I only know there are three files because of disk defrag. The same method shows the MFT is only about 27KB. So a few questions: 1) What are the three files (is MFT one of these?) 2) Which is taking up 180MB? 3) Since I thought OS files were not included in used-space calculations, why am I showing used space. 4) Is there a way to view the f…

maintain user profiles when changing domain
by Guest JT in VN- 5 replies

We have rebuilt our server to a new domain. How can we keep user profiles with minimal interruption? I found the "Copy To" user profile function in System Properties but I'm not sure what exactly it copies over. Does it just copy over the users folders such as My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, etc? Or, does it also copy over settings like drive mappings and printer mappings and other settings? It is important that the Outlook settings also copy over (along with Outlook rules). Please help! We have a lot of PC's to migrate and manually copying over profiles and then re-creating drive mappings and printers and other settings is going to waste a lot of…

moving to a new disk
by Guest Bill H.- 5 replies

I'm changing to a different boot disk. I used Ghost to create an image file of the "old" hard drive, and then to put that image onto the new drive. However, I can't log into Win 2k any more on the new drive. I get the logon screen, enter the info, and it just shuts down. If I try safe mode, after trying to log in, I'm taken back to the login screen. What's going on? Thanks. -- Bill

Hello, Win 2000 sp4, Pent 3, 850mhz, 512mb ram. I have 2 drives, system drive C: is a 40gb and storage drive D: is a 160mb. Problem starts like this. The other day while recording some audio, I noticed some sluggish, skipping action. Playing back that material was the same. I then opened a pre-recorded wave file and the computer play perfectly. So I cleaned the D: drive by deleting some files, scanning for viruses, adware, malware, etc. Then I did a chkdsk which completed without errors and tried to run a disk defrag. I received a message saying defrag could not be performed or something to that effect. I did not search the MS Knowledge as I just shut …

Downgrading an XPmachine...need utility...
by Guest TestTurtle- 5 replies

That analyzes the hardware and sets pathways to manufacturers. I have a damn gateway product that keeps rebooting after a bugcheck with XP. eMachines model W3118 I used to use Aida32 and used it to get the proper nVidia video driver for W2kP but aida is an older product and the author has gone commercial, going to the Everest team. There is HWiNFO32 but it is shareware. Being older aida32 can't identify all components, placing 'unknown' it catagories where it doesn't recogize the hardware. Isn't there a freeware solution out there anymore? Thanks.
