Control panel - Display
by Guest TKHaw- 5 replies
All of a sudden my W2k is acting funny. My background is a picture from a digital folder. When I go to Control Panel - Display, on the background menu there are no options that I can use. I can change nothing. All other portions of Display seem to be operable, all except Background. In addition the icon that were previously to the right of the Start icon on the screen are gone. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Max hdd size = 128Gb ?? Help!
by Guest InOverMyHead- 5 replies
I got a new WD 320 GB IDE ATA hdd, but plugging it in as second drive (drive "1") it shows up in Disk Management as "Unallocated" with size = 128 GB. Help! Should I f-disk or format it? And why does the "WELCOME TO THE WRITE SIGNATURE AND UPGRADE WIZARD" screen pop up wanting me to create a 'dynamic disk'? I'd sure like to get it installed as a 320Gb disk if that is possible. Or as partitions that total that size if I must. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Bob

by Guest kk- 5 replies

I’m going to replace a “old” windows 2000 file server with a “newer” server which also run windows 2000. What will be the steps to maintain all shares, permissions & UNC path? Do the followings be OK? 1. Setup a new windows 2000 server named it “newer” & join AD. 2. Copy all files from “old” to “newer”. 3. Shut down “old”. 4. Rename “newer” to “old”. I’ve search the Internet & found info only for win2000 migrate to win2003. I also need to minimize the downtime as we are running 24hrs a day. Any suggestions?

I've had 3 computers in the past week come in with blank blue desktops (no icons, no taskbars, no start button) just blank blue with a cursor arrow. Two machines were Win 2K sp4 with all updates, 1 was Win XP home sp2. I can use CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager and run programs/tasks and have scanned all 3 for viruses/spyware and all 3 came up clean on HJT. Anyone have any ideas on the cause/solution ? Thanks for any replies

Symantec NetDetect scheduled task disabled
by Guest Dubious Dude- 5 replies
I'm running Windows 2000 professional, SP4, with the corporate version of Symantec AntiVirus, full version 10.0.2.2000. When I log in as administrator, I see that one of the scheduled tasks is Symantec NetDetect, but it is disabled and has never run. I haven't found a way to show when the task was created. Despite it being diabled, Symantec AntiVirus seems to automatically update anyway. Is this scheduled task simply a hold-over from older versions of Symantec AntiVirus?

by Guest SpaceMarine- 5 replies

hello, i recently bought a new samsung 320gb SATA II drive, OEM: http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/SpinPointTSeries/HardDiskDrive_SpinPointTSeries_HD321KJ.asp (http://tinyurl.com/38s8bw) ....i installed it in a dell optiplex GX280, which according to the bios sees it as a 320gb drive. then i used the w2k install cd to re- install windows on it. the problem -- windows 2000 server is only seeing it as a 128gb drive, both in the win installer and in "Disk Management" post-installation. i installed SP4 and the latest bios for the dell (A08). any ideas on why it wouldnt be showing up at full capacity? ive never owned a SATA drive before, so may…

Lost identity: W2k treats me like a new user for all settings
by Guest jmoleary@earthlink.net- 5 replies

I've had this Windows 2000 box for 5 years. One PC with a cable internet connection. Today I turned on my PC and logged on and it logged on just fine but everything I have customized is GONE. My desktop, user settings, etc. It treated me as if I were a completely new user, asking me for internet connection settings, MS Office settings, etc. My user name is "joe". I can still see my old desktop sitting there under the "Documents and Settings\joe" folder but now windows apparently is using "Documents and Settings\joe.joeo" Can anyone tell me how I can let Windows know to use the old folders, desktop settings, display settings, etc?

How do I disconnect from a network share?
by Guest Ant- 5 replies

Hello! After connecting to a network share successfully that requires me to log in (user name and password) through a shortcut or manually (e.g., \\192.168.1.123\), how do I disconnect so that when I connect again without a reboot, I get a password prompt again since I am using shared machines (Windows 2000 and XP; good to know for Vista too if it is different). DHCP Redundant Configuration Question
by Guest MPG- 5 replies
Hello folks, We've got a domain that has about 120 DHCP clients. We've got two Win2K DCs. Until recently, all of our DHCP was handled by the second domain controller. I modified the setup to provide some DHCP redundancy and have some questions. Here is the current setup: DC1 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.157 - 10.1.5.254 DC2 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.156 The overlapping scopes and mutually exclusive exclusion lists were set up based on a recommendation in TechNet DHCP best practices. This basically leaves half of range on each DHCP server. With the current setup, each DHCP server has 97 a…

How can I disable the use of regedit and regedt32?
by Guest George Hester- 5 replies
The reason I ask is because for some reason the two have been disabled in my domain controller Administrator account in Windows 2000 SP4. Luckily I made duplicate Administrator equivalent accounts when I first constructed this machine so not all is lost but I would like to get back the control for the original Administrator account. I believe something happened to a Group Policy or Local Security or Domain security or Controller security or some other security or NTFS securuity or ... Thanks. -- George Hester _________________________________

How to make Explorer show files in Details view

After I set one directory to the Details view, I go to Tools/Folder Options/View and click on the Like Current Folder. Problem is that it doesn't force Details as the default view for all folders the next time I open Explorer. The directories I manually set to Details remember that view, but the others remain in the default Large Icons view. Suggestions? Thanks, Ray

Memory error message
by Guest rubyjack- 5 replies

Recently I've started getting a message when I close down an IE6 window. The message is 'The instruction at "0x6600accc" referenced memory at "0x6600accc". The memory could not be "read".' Microsoft yielded no answers. I don't get this message every time I close down an IE6 window, but I do get it frequently (65%?). Does anyone know what's going on? And does anyone know if this is a message I need to worry about? Thanks for any help, Dan Hacker -- ---------------- Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. - B.
