How to Get Rid of Multi-boot WIN 98SE Option Leaving Only WIN 2000?
by Guest JOHNCHAP2- 5 replies
My startup is a multi boot to MS WIN2000, MS WINDOWS, or MS WIN2000 Recovery Console. I ended up with this several years ago when I upgraded from Win 98SE to WIN 2000. I want to get rid of the MS WINDOWS option and totally remove the old version so I can convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS. Will removing the MS WINDOWS line from the BOOT.INI and WINBOOT.INI files do this or do I need to do some other things as well? Incidently, there are at least two versions of each of these files with today's date. Can I then simply remove the WINDOWS directory from the C Drive without screwing things up? Do I need to do anything else? For whatever it is worth, ther…

Login Screen Doesnt show up at boot
by Guest Usmanatron- 5 replies
Hi, Im having trouble getting to the login screen in my Win2K installation. Everything boots up fine, but it stops where the 'press Ctrl+Alt+Del' is supposed to come up. Instead, I just have a solid blue screen with the mouse. Ive tried all safe modes and still get the same problem. I don't really like the idea of having to reinstall Windows from scratch, so is there anything else i can do? Ive been reading around and suspect it might be something to do with userinit.exe, the one I have is: 17.3KB, modified 19/06/2003. The last thing I did was clone the hard drive (my idea of a backup) - Ive read KB article 249321 about the drive letter, but I dont t…

How can I confirm I can access an NTP server
by Guest Guest- 5 replies
Greetings, I really would like to see a 593 event showing up in the system log, that to me would be positive confirmation. I have bounced the time service, done a w32tm -s (it's a 2000 box), and the /querysntp returns the correct value. My 11 warnings have stopped, but I would feel better if I got some "positive feedback" so I know the new time server is actually working for these servers. On one of my servers, I got a 593 shortly after bouncing the service, and this one has the Update Rollup for SP4 installed, the other two servers don't and they don't get the 593 after bouncing the services. I don't know if this make's a difference. If anyone has …

Task Bar "always on top": NOT!
by Guest surface9- 5 replies
I have selected "always on top" and "auto hide" for my taskbar (which normally appears on the bottom for me). I then run a slide show which allows me to display the cursor during the slide show, and, I can move the mouse around, BUT, when I move the movue to the bottom, the task bar DOES NOT APPEAR. It remains hidden. When I go through the very same steps in windows 98se, the task bar will appear during the slide show if, and only if, I move the cursor to the bottom. How do I get windows 2000 (sp4) to accomodate the "always on top" aspect of the taskbar under "auto hide" while a slide show is in progress and I move the cursor to the bottom area where the t…

Thinkpad cold boot problem
by Guest Roger Fink- 5 replies
I have two nearly identical W2k ThinkPad laptops, which display the same problem. During a cold boot GoBack is unable to initialize (if that is the correct term for this), and when that happens the boot just hangs. Instead of proceeding from "Preparing Network Connections" to "Applying Security Policy", and then to the logon screen, instead it proceeds from "Preparing Network Connections" to "Applying Computer Settings", and from there into limbo. I'm sure GoBack is the problem because in a successful boot, by design the GoBack logo will momentarily flash on the screen once it's initialized. After this failure, if you immediately reboot from shutdown, the next bo…

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced
by Guest Bill Stock- 5 replies

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced I've got the following message when the system boots: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced " which I realize means the registry is hosed. I've renamed System.Alt, but I get the same message. The Repair copy is over a year old, so it's missing lots of Windows updates. The wierd thing is that I can't get into the installation on C: from the Win2K CD to repair it, Windows cannot see it. If I boot into my rescue installation all the disks and files look fine, chkdsk runs OK and all…

Can not shut down or restart computer.
by Guest Ward- 5 replies

Hi. I have a windows 2K Pro machine with all of the latest patches installed. I can not restart or shut down the machine. If I choose to restart or shut down, windows goes thru it's normal routine and closes everthing and then shuts itself down, however the computer will not turn "off" or "reboot" after this step. All that is left is either a black screen or a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. In order to shut down I have to press and hold the power button. I checked the even log and couldn't find anything telling. Perhaps it's a bios setting? Anyway, pressing the power button to shut down is not the solution I'm looki…

DOS print to default printer?
by Guest Greg Russell- 5 replies
We have a "default" printer created (Lexmark) which works properly from Windows applications. The printer is connected via the parallel port LPT1. We have one legacy DOS application that works properly, but the print output doesn't seem to get directed to the default printer; it just disappears somewhere. "dir > lpt1" at the command prompt illustrates the problem, as no directory listing goes to the printer, nor does any print job spool even briefly. Is something special required to print DOS jobs in Windows 2000 please, and if so, what is it? Thanks for your help.

Systen log filling up with this error every minute?
by Guest Eric- 5 replies

I have a Windows 2000 Server box that keeps filling up the system log with the error: Server was unable to allocate a work item 2 times in the last 60 seconds. It writes this event about every minute and a half all day and all night long even when noone is on the system. I have done a little research and found a KB article that talks about upping the sytem pages but my setting was already higher than what is suggested. Is this message cause for concern? If so what can I do to fix it? Thanks

Hi! I have a windows server 2003 domain controller along with two other application servers. I created a new user in the Active Directory and logged onto the domain using his credentials from his desktop computer. While testing - I found out that Iam not able to save any files I created onto the "C" Drive or the "D" Drive, but I am able create a folder on "C" or "D" Drives and then I can save files inside the folders. Iam also able to save onto My Documents and Desktop. The error I get when trying to save onto "C" or "D" Drive is - "You do not have permissions to save in this Directory. by Guest Doug M.- 5 replies

Hi I've copied a batch file script that I found on the web to force ntbackup to use a removable external USB hard drive. However, the ntbackup stops with the message "the media is not blank - do you want to overwrite?" or something to that effect. Since the script runs late at night, the backup doesn't run. Thanks in advance for the help. Here's the script: rsm.exe refresh /LF"external USB" sleep 30 for /f "Tokens=1-4 Delims=/ " %%i in ('date /t') do set dt=%%i-%%j-%%k-%%l for /f "Tokens=1" %%i in ('time /t') do set tm=-%%i set tm=%tm::=-% set dtt=%dt%%tm% C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Setting…

Remote Shutdown
by Guest JR- 5 replies

Another awkward question - sorry. Trying to shut down remotely a Win2 server. Using shutdown.exe from command line "shutdown -s -m \\server /-t10" for 10 second delay. Shuts down server but does NOT shut down the PC, leaving the old fashioned "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message. Shutdown.exe is 5.1.2600.2180 HOW can I also get it to turn off the computer? This is needed as I want to shutdown from other side of the world and as only file server without AD can only access a desktop on another machine through pcanywhere. Thanks JR Somerset

I need to undo what I did in Users and Passwords
by Guest ddt- 5 replies

Please --- I hope you can help this grandmother of 10 to undo what I did. I bought my computer from my work back in 2003. It came with Windows 2000 Professional. Previous to my getting into Users and Passwords today -- on the Control Panel I used to be able to turn my computer on, and everything would come up on the screen without putting a password in. Well due to my daughter and her small children (my grandchildren), planning to come and live with me. I thought that I would fix my computer so that it required a password to get into it. This is the first time I ever attemped to do this. If I can get things back to the way they used to be, maybe I…
