Print window problem
by Guest C. Moore- 5 replies
When I go to print from OE, (and some other programs) to my HP DJ 9800, a window comes up with information like select printer, quantity and other chck off points and the print button at the bottom. The window is vertically larger than my screen image with the result I can't get to the "Print" button. There is plenty of empty space in the window but no way that I can find to shrink it. There is no part screen window button in the upper right corner. It does not respond to putting the cursor on the edge. Suggestions? C. Moore

Explorer hangs when adding scheduled task
by Guest Dubious Dude- 5 replies
I am using Windows 2000 Professional, SP4. As a power user, I tried to add a scheduled task using the Scheduled Task Wizard. After the clicking Next on the 1st step, the Wizard hangs, and explorer.exe takes up 99% of the CPU. The only information I've found on the WWW and usenet is for Windows XP: 1) A general referral to generic troubleshooting for scheduled tasks. It doesn't seem to address the inability to create a scheduled task. http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-519894.php 2) A vague description of the problem at Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841846 The solution in (2) is related to hotfixes. Since Micros…

Autorun.inf virus
by Guest Sid Elbow- 5 replies
My virus Scanner AVG has just reported a virus in a file that's been siting in a backup directory on my system for just about a year without being previously flagged (I guess yesterday's update got it). What surprised me was that the file reported is an application's autorun.inf which is a text file. When I opened the file in wordpad I saw this [AutoRun] open=RavMon.exe shell\open=´ò¿ª(&O) shell\open\Command=RavMon.exe shell\explore=×ÊÔ´¹ÜÀíÆ÷(&X) shell\explore\Command="RavMon.exe -e" (I hope the strange characters in the 3rd and 5th lines show up). Is it possible that this could act as a virus/malware?

Win2k shutdown from keyboard - can I prevent this?
by Guest George Orwell- 5 replies
When I shutdown Windows 2000 from the start menu, it spends ages shutting down. However, if I press the "Power" key on the keyboards, I see a little alert box saying Windows is shutting down for half a second, the power snuffs out. Yet when I reboot, I don't get scandisk running, as I would expect from such a rapid ending. So is it okay to kill Windows by the keyboard? But I wish to disable the Power key on the keyboard. I went to control panel, and can't find anything under the power or keyboard options. Switching to a new C: drive (XP also)
by Guest surface9- 5 replies
This may seem a bit confusing - it shouldn't. I have my win2k pro (sp4) system installed onto my ATA C: drive which happens to be mounted within one of those removable h/d mounting brackets - after shutdwon I can unkey and remove this h/d from the system completely. If I boot up wih this h/d unplugged, then all that win2k sees is the the primary DMA channel (master) is not connected. I have a brand new SATA drive which I have formatted the same as my C: drive (FAT32). If I boot up wihout my C: drive, the system tries to find a bootable disk elsewhere, and, if I could makte this SATA drive bootable, it would work from it. So, instead of having to go throu…

SP4 problems
by Guest Ray K- 5 replies
For years, my W2K with SP4 ran okay. Last week, following a virus attack, I reformatted c: and reinstalled W2K. To make a very long story short, without SP4, webpages open fast. With SP4, they are virtually impossible to open, with either of my browsers, Sea Monkey and IE. I got the SP4 update right from microsoft. File name is SP4express_EN.exe, size 589K, version 1.16.120.0, June 20, 2003. Odd thing: before all my problems started, I distinctly remember that if I went to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, there were multiple entries related to SP4; maybe they were later patches to SP4. When I reinstall SP4 today, and then go to remove it, there is ju…

Unable to change message store location in Outlook Express
by Guest Frank Shrader- 5 replies
I posted this on the OE6 newsgroup--feedback suggested that Power Users may not have the permission needed to make the changes I want to make when Windows 2000 Professional is installed on an NTFS partition. They suggested I present my problem to the Windows 2000 community. I am unable to change the location of the Outlook Express 6 (OE6) message store folder when logged on as a power user; however, I have no problem changing its location when I change my group membership to the Administrators Gp. My OS is Windows 2000 Professional w/SP4, browser is IE6 and I am using Outlook Express 6. All available updates are installed. As a Power User, when I try to …

Logon Message error when logging on to local (non-AD) machine
by Guest E-Double- 5 replies
A Win 2000 Pro/sp4 machine cannot be logged on to, either in safe mode or normal boot, as the following message (or something to this effect) appears- "Logon Message: You cannot logon to the machine now because the domain xxx is not available." This particular machine is not and has never been part of a domain. Running a Repair from the Win2000 Install CD did not fix the problem, nor did trying to reset the Admin password with a boot utility. Ideally we would like to salvage this Win2000 install and not have to do a complete reinstall of the OS. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. TIA ...

Video plays 15% fast...?
by Guest Kenneth- 5 replies
Howdy, I have a Win 2000 system that I personally use infrequently. Other family members use it nearly every day. Minutes ago, I went to Youtube to play a video. It played "fast" that is, both the audio and video were playing at about 115% of their proper speed. My wife said "Oh yes, this system does that all the time..." Every video source played the same way. What might cause this sort of problem? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Windows update in windows 2000 not working?
by Guest Mr Ben- 5 replies
I have two servers in my network that I am having a problem patching. I run windows update on them, and it comes up with the list of patches that need to be applied. I say go ahead and it fails on all of them and says it needs a restart, so I restart and the same thing happens. NOTES: 1, the "download size" of the patches is 0kb so apperently during one attempt or another they were downloaded? If so to where and how can I delete the information that they downloaded and get those again? 2, On one of the servers I decided to manually download and install the patches, and that worked except for 4 patches KB941693, KB944338, KB945553, KB948590. On these 4 pa…

I've switched from a real old, Asus P2B, motherboard to a slightly newer one, Asus P4PE. My Win2000 CD, which has worked many times in the past, now when I try to boot up to install Win2000, will go through the first screen that lists all the components and then stop with these words: Boot from Atapi CD-ROM: no emulation. I can boot up in DOS using the Hirens CD. And I've tried to install Win2000 via DOS, and I can get partway through the installation, but when the installation starts copying all the files onto the hard drive...some of them won't copy and so I can't get a good installation. I've checked this Win2000 CD on my other computer and it will go throug…

corrupt files in W2K system
by Guest Jim Szatkowski- 4 replies
I'm having issues with a Win2000Pro SP4 installation (workstation). I had some files corrupt on the hard drive and ended up running a repair - chkdsk /f and getting the hard drive to read correctly now. Win2KPro wouldn't boot. The drive is still ok - I'm dual booting into other OS's just fine. However, it appears the corruption was in/on a section of the drive that had the 2KPro system files. It starts to boot into 2K and goes to the black screen with the white boxes across the bottom and hangs on the second little box. That part appears to be past bootldr and etc. I tried to do an inplace upgrade-repair of the partition and got a parallel insta…
